With a rich history spanning over 30 years, the Australian String Quartet (ASQ) has a strong national profile as an Australian chamber music group of excellence, performing at the highest international level. From its home base at the University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, the ASQ delivers a vibrant annual artistic program encompassing performances, workshops, commissions and education projects across Australia and abroad.

One of Australia’s finest music exports, the ASQ has appeared at international music festivals and toured extensively throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, New Zealand and Asia in recent years.The Quartet frequently performs with leading guest artists and in recent years has appeared with internationally acclaimed artists including pianists Angela Hewitt and Piers Lane, mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, clarinettist Michael Collins, violist Brett Dean and cellist Pieter Wispelwey.

The Quartet’s performance calendar for 2016 comprises its National Season featuring three unique concert programs presented in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney; its own flagship festivals in the Southern Grampians and Margaret River and international and regional touring.

With an active focus on recording, the ASQ will embark on a range of recording initiatives in 2016, including a project to record an anthology of Australian string quartets. The Quartet’s commitment to secondary and tertiary education programs will expand as regional residencies also become a regular event for the ASQ.

The members of the ASQ are privileged to perform on a matched set of Guadagnini instruments. Hand crafted by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini between c.1743-1784 in Turin and Piacenza, Italy, these exquisite instruments were brought together through the vision of Ulrike Klein. The instruments are on loan to the ASQ for their exclusive use through the generosity of Ulrike Klein and Ngeringa Arts.

Francesca Hiew plays a 1748-49 Guadagnini Violin, Piacenza.

Stephen King plays a 1783 Guadagnini Viola, Turin.

Sharon Draper plays a c.1743 Guadagnini Violoncello, Piacenza, ‘Ngeringa’.

Niall Brown has over the course of the past three decades, established himself as an internationally renowned cellist, chamber musician and pedagogue.

For a decade as cellist of the Australian String Quartet, and as a principal cellist for the Camerata Bern, Camerata Lysy and the Scottish Ensemble, Niall has toured and performed at some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals

Now living in Luxembourg, Niall combines activities as co-principal cellist of the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, cellist of the Kreisler Quartet and Professor of Chamber Music at the Conservatoire du Nord with regular performances as soloist, together with pianist, Isabelle Trüb, in the “Trüb-Brown Duo”, and his position as Artistic Director of the festival “Automne Musical d’Ollon” in Switzerland.

While in Australia, Niall Brown performs on a new cello made by Rainer Beilharz.

The Swiss/Australian pianist Isabelle Trüb represents the fourth generation in a long line of distinguished musicians, and performs extensively in duo with cellist Niall Brown as well as with other renowned artists.

A scholarship at a young age from the Goehner Stiftung/Migros enabled Isabelle to further her outstanding musical potential at the University of Indiana, Bloomington, USA.

Throughout her subsequent career, Isabelle has collaborated regularly throughout Europe and the USA with renowned artists such as Pierre Fournier, Janos Starker, Marçal Cervera, Bruno Giuranna, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Maxim Vengerov and Joseph Silverstein.

Since 2009, she has served on the Faculty of the Conservatoire de Musique de la Ville de Luxembourg.

Katie Yap grew up playing the violin and piano in her hometown of Brisbane and studied viola with Patricia Pollett at the University of Queensland, graduating with Honours and a University Medal.

After studying at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), she successfully auditioned for the position of Associate Principal Viola of Orchestra Victoria. Amongst many other orchestral appearances, in 2014 she was an Emerging Artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, performing around Australia with their touring ensemble, ACO2.

Katie is passionate about using music as a way to connect with people, and finds great pleasure in chamber music, performing regularly with her ensembles the Chrysalis Trio (two-time finalists in the ANAM Chamber Music Competition) and with the Urangara Quartet.

Richard Divall was the Music Director of Victoria State Opera for 25 years and Principal Resident Conductor of Opera Australia up to 2001. He has conducted 151 different operas, and many ballets and concerts. He is a Fellow of Queen’s College, and on the SCR of Newman College. As a musicologist he has undertaken 40 years of editing and publication of early Australian music, baroque opera and sacred music, and was recently awarded a PhD in theology from the University of Divinity on eighteenth-century Maltese history. He is editing a series of 100 volumes of early Australian music for Monash University and a complete edition of the music of the English baroque composer, Michael Christian Festing.

He is a Vice Chancellor’s Professiorial Fellow at Monash University, an Associate Professor at Music at the University of Melbourne, and a Visiting Professor at King’s College London. Frà Richard is a Knight of Malta in Solemn Religious Profession. He is the Hon Patron of many organisations.
