Problem:A deepwater Gulf of Mexico producer had to regularly shut in a well to perform solvent soaks to return the well to its original capacity. The well, having been shown to exhibit prolonged evidence of downhole asphaltene deposition issues, was selected as a candidate for a field trial of Champion Technologies’ newly formulated asphaltene inhibitor Flotron M-267DW.

Despite multiple trials, products provided by the incumbent supplier had been unable to decrease the tubing asphaltene deposition. The continued asphaltene build up not only resulted in lost daily production, but also in significant deferment volumes created by the well being shut in during solvent soak periods.

Solution:Asphaltene Inhibitor Flotron M-267DW was selected based on promising lab test results and recent successful applications in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The field trial was initiated immediately after a solvent flush procedure which established clean well tubing. The clean tubing was verified by a differential pressure of <5psi to start the trial.

The well was allowed to flow untreated for three days at the beginning of the trial to confirm the untreated asphaltene deposition rate. A consistent differential pressure gain of 13 psi/day was observed in the untreated well and became the basis for measurement during the trial. Following the 3-day untreated baseline period, Flotron M-267DW injection was established at 1,000ppm to a deep downhole injection point.

GOM deepwater producer nets million-dollar savings from fewer shut-in days and reduction in solvent flushes.

Asphaltene Inhibitor Flotron® M-267DW

Over the next four days, well treatment with Flotron M-267DW facilitated a pressure build rate of less than 1 psi/day.

RESULT:A DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENT WAS OBSERVED (see Figure 1). ONCE CHEMICAL INJECTION INTO THE WELLBORE WAS

ACHIEVED, THE CONSISTENT 13-PSI/DAY PRESSURE GAIN OBSERVED UNDER UNTREATED CONDITIONS VIRTUALLY

DISAPPEARED AFTER THE UNTREATED OIL WAS DISPLACED. WELL TREATMENT WITH FLOTRON M-267DW

FACILITATED A PRESSURE BUILD RATE OF LESS THAN 1 PSI/DAY. TREATMENT RATES OF 500 PPM YIELDED

PRESSURE GAINS OF ONLY 1 PSI/DAY OVER FIVE DAYS. FURTHER DOSING OPTIMIZATION CONDUCTED DURING THE

TRIAL SHOWED FLOTRON M-267DW CONCENTRATIONS AS LOW AS 250 PPM TO BE EFFECTIVE IN CONTROLLING

ASPHALTENE DEPOSITION AND TUBING PRESSURE BUILD WITHIN PRESCRIBED LIMITS.

THE INCREASED OIL PRODUCTION RESULTING FROM FEWER SHUT-IN DAYS, COMBINED WITH A REDUCTION IN

SOLVENT FLUSHES, WAS WORTH MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO THE PRODUCER.
