Short manual for Aspen

Find Aspen! Start / All Programs / AspenTech / Aspen Engineering Suite / Aspen Plus 2006 / Aspen Plus User Interface

First time there is a question about registration. Select Academic User and then OK.

2

Create a new simulation by select Template.

Select General with Metric Units

3

First time you have to select to run the calculations on your own computer, Select ”Save as Default Connection”

Enter into Data / Setup

4

Change the units to SI-CBAR.

Pres and you will come to Components, write Water and press Enter. If you have more substanses in the system, just enter them as well.

5

Press once again and you will come to Properties, select STEAMNBS as Base method.

Close the menu.

Enter the Tools / Options.

6

Under ”Results View” marc some useful variables (T,h..) as will show up in the block sheet

Select fliken Flowsheet and remove the marks at ”Automatically assign..” (block and stream), OK

7

Close the menu. Select ”Pressure Changers” / Compr / ICON3 as the turbine.

Click on the blocksheet and, and enter a name for the block. The turbine will show up. Save!

8

Select ”Material Stream” and you can check the connections between the various components just by moving the cursor around.

The red ones has to be conneccted.

9

Connect both to an empty area by clicking on the red arrow and then on the place where you would like to direct the stream.

Select Work to connect the net work from the turbine.

10

Connect the net work as above.

Continue by clicking on and enter the properties for the incomming steam.

11

Enter once again and enter the properties for the turbine.

Under ”Convergence” allow for moist in the steam, an error will otherwise appear later during simulation

12

Press to start the simulation, shows a successful calculation Close!.

Enter Data / Result summary / Streams

13

The results show up, e.g. the dryness fraction is 91,9 %.

The turbine net work output is 47 MW.

14

Select Heat Exchangers / HeatX and click to place it where you like Save!

Select Material STREAMS to show all connections that is needed. (red) Move the marker over the arrows and they will be explained.

15

Connect Cold-in, Cold-out and Hot-out to a free space as before.

Press and rightclick on tne material stream 2, select ”Reconnect Destination”. Note that it is possible to rename the stream using ”Rename Stream”.

16

Continue by clicking on Hot-in on the heat exchanger.

Pres and enter properties for the cooling water stream.

17

Press and enter properties for the heat exchanger

Press to start the simulation. This result shown under Data / Result summary / Streams.

18

If you like to change the cooling water flow so the temperature out reaches 60°C you may add a control system to adjust data. This is called”Desing Spec”

Tryck på New and name the regulator.

19

Under define you have to find the variables that are to be adjusted.

Press new and enter a name on the variable to use on the next page.

Select the propertiy that you connect to the name TKYLUT as just was given.

20

Press twice and fill in a mathematical expression under ”Spec” by the use of the variables that was defined under ”Define”. At Target you of course enter the target value for the actual expression. Under Tolerance you enter the tolerance for the convergence.

Press once again and find the parameter you want the regulator to control. Note! select something that has a numerical value. Note also the unit and enter a lower and upper limit, both need to be reasonable.

21

Press to start the simulation, which gives the result shown above under Data / Result summary / Streams. A cooling water flow of 4 milion kg/hour will obviousely give the target temperature.

List of useful blocks

Pressure Changers / Compr Compression and expansion of gases, i.e. both compressors (ICON2) and turbines (ICON3).

Pressure Changers / Pump Pumps for liquids .

Mixers/Splitters / Fsplit Splits a stream in two

Heat Exchangers / Heatx Heat exchanging between two streams.

Reactors / Rgibbs Combustion chamber that deals with chemical reactions..

Often several streams are connected to the inlet on a block.

By the Tools / Options / Result View you may enter temperatures etc. in the block sheet
