GPS EnvironmentGPS Environment

 Host Geelong GPSnet

Cooperative Base Station

 Use precise GPS for geodetic

and project control, surveillance

monitoring and urban asset

mapping

 Use sub-metre GPS for rural

asset mapping and

navigation to assets

Page 21: Aspects of the Geospatial Technology Environment at Barwon ... · Spatial Information Services SIS ProFIS Services (6) Land Information (2 x 3) Cartographics (2) GIS data maintenance

GPS EnvironmentGPS Environment

Hosting computer infrastructure during pilot studies for new

differential correction services being developed by DSE,

VICpos and MELBpos

Assisting with field testing of both systems and developing

new asset recording processes to use them (reforming

workflows)

Our Future Directions - GISOur Future Directions - GIS

New GIS bringing new open architecture …..

GIS Spatial Data Base

GPSCADGIS View/Query

Improved access for consultants and other external users

Replace proforma based “as constructed” records with

coordinate based system via CAD environment

GIS Data Admin

Improved view and query environment for users

Improved integration with CAD and GPS environments

Integration with new document management system

GIS Power User

Page 23: Aspects of the Geospatial Technology Environment at Barwon ... · Spatial Information Services SIS ProFIS Services (6) Land Information (2 x 3) Cartographics (2) GIS data maintenance

Our Future Directions - CADOur Future Directions - CAD

Improve access to data for design consultants and other

external users

Engage with industry providers re access to digital subdivision

data for map base maintenance (via SPEAR)

Review and rationalise in-house CAD system requirements

to further improve interoperability

Develop, with industry, digital design standards and digital “as

constructed” record systems

Improve digital data license agreements for external data users

(privacy, liability, meta data)

Page 24: Aspects of the Geospatial Technology Environment at Barwon ... · Spatial Information Services SIS ProFIS Services (6) Land Information (2 x 3) Cartographics (2) GIS data maintenance

Our Future Directions - GPSOur Future Directions - GPS

Support the expansion of MELBpos to provide precise RT GPS

over all urban areas under our jurisdiction

Extend use of sub metre GPS to operations staff – rural asset

mapping, navigation, environmental mapping

Upgrade GPS hardware to enable full integration with

VICpos and MELBpos

Integrate precise GPS into asset recording for new urban

infrastructure constructed by Barwon Water

Assist external providers working in land development industry

to take up the technology (leadership)

Investigate a local geoid model for the region

Page 25: Aspects of the Geospatial Technology Environment at Barwon ... · Spatial Information Services SIS ProFIS Services (6) Land Information (2 x 3) Cartographics (2) GIS data maintenance

Our Future Directions - GPSOur Future Directions - GPS

 Currently over 1500

ground marks are needed

to sustain current levels of

survey coordination in this

region

 The introduction of

MELBpos and VICpos will

dramatically reduce

dependence on these

marks

 Extending MELBpos

westerly will therefore be

sought

Page 26: Aspects of the Geospatial Technology Environment at Barwon ... · Spatial Information Services SIS ProFIS Services (6) Land Information (2 x 3) Cartographics (2) GIS data maintenance

Key Points for the RegionKey Points for the Region

The map base for this region will soon have enhanced spatial

accuracy, particularly in urban areas, and duplication will be

gone

Data supply to land development industry is being considered

by councils and by us – can we coordinate & standardise?

Initiatives for improvements to infrastructure design and

recording are coming, driven by us and by councils – can we

standardise?

 VICpos is here now

MELBpos is close by and expanding

Absolute positioning via GPS is now available as a component

of mapping and asset recording systems and will quickly

become the system of choice for the spatial industry
