    History

    Apartheid (racial segregation) laws are established asearly as 1910 that dictate the separation of races.

    South Africa no longer an English colony in 1950,Afrikaner government elected which continues system of

    apartheid.In 1960, a political protest in a segregated township issuppressed by the police. 69 die, and 180 are wounded inthe Sharpeville massacre

    Shortly afterwards, the African National Congress, ablack political party, is banned, and Nelson Mandelaimprisoned for 27 years.

    After years of international pressure, these laws arefinally overturned in 1990, leading to free elections in

    1994: Nelson Mandela elected president
