PLENARY SPEAKERS

DEBORAH SOMMER’S research explores the spiritual, iconographic, and iconoclastic aspects of the Confucian tradition in China. Her current project, The Afterlife of Confucius, examines the religious significance of the body of Confucius. Her Chinese Religion: An Anthology of Sources (Oxford, 1995) was one of the first teaching texts to include materials on women in Chinese religions. It is complemented by her recent works that include a survey of early Chinese sacrificial traditions for Crossroad’s Confucian Spirituality series (200 and 200) and a study of Confucian fertility sacrifices. Studies of later Chinese iconoclasm have appeared in On Sacred Grounds: Culture, Politics, and the Formation of the Cult of Confucius (Harvard, 2002, T. Wilson, ed.) and in Ming Studies (Fall 200). She made extensive contributions to the Routledge/Curzon Encyclopedia of Confucianism (Yao Xinzhong, ed. 200). She holds a Ph.D in religion from Columbia University, and she now Chairs the Department of Religion at Gettysburg College. In fall 200 she was a Research Fellow of the Institute for International Research at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing.

PHILIP J. IVANHOE received both his B.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. His primary research interests are Chinese religious and ethical thought. Carr, (Seven Bridges Press, 2000), Ethics in the Confucian Tradition: The Thought of Mencius and Wang Yang-ming (Hackett Publishing, 2002), The Laozi or Daodejing, (Hackett Publishing, 2002), and Readings in Classical Chinese Philosophy, co-edited with Bryan W. Van Norden, Revised Second Edition. (Indianapolis, IN: Hackett Publishing Company, 2006). Among his forthcoming publications is the anthology Working Virtue: Virtue Ethics and Contemporary Moral Problems, with Rebecca Walker, (Oxford University Press, 2006).
