When we book holidays we aim for paradiseon every front: magnificent attractions, richculture, world-class beaches and perfectweather. Thailand offers this magic mix, andI am deeply honoured that World TravelAwards is hosting its Asia & AustralasiaCeremony 2011 in this paradise corner ofSouth East Asia.

Thailand, in many ways, is a barometer forthe changes sweeping across the continentof Asia. Whilst the traditional economicpowerhouses of Europe and North Americastruggle to shake off the recession, growthin international arrivals is forecast at 5percent for 2011, according to the UNWTO.

This surge is being driven by intra-Asia travel– emerging markets such as India, China andMalaysia and their burgeoning middle classesdiscovering an insatiable appetite for travel. We expect this growth to continue for atleast the next decade, making the futurevery bright indeed for the luxury hospitalitysector.

This year is already shaping up to be themost ambitious yet in the 18-year history ofWorld Travel Awards. I am pleased to reportthat the number of organisations nominatedfor the “Oscars of the Travel Industry” hasrisen 13 per cent year-on-year.

Meanwhile the number of voters is up 11percent year-on-year, driven by a surge inconsumer voting. This reflects how thepublic now rely increasingly on World TravelAwards as their gold seal of travel excellence.

Winning a World Travel Award is the ultimatetravel accolade, with the endorsement ofover 213,000 voting travel professionalsdemonstrating to both the travel industryand the travel consumer that your brandstands in a class of its very own.

I wish to extend a special thank you to ourhost, the incredible Dusit Thani Bangkok, aswell as our event partners WeClickMedia, and media partners eTurboNews,TravelDailyNews, Travtalk and BreakingTravel News.

Honouring and promoting excellence andinnovation in travel and tourism are why weare gathered all here. Thank you for joiningus on this very special occasion, andcongratulations for your incredibleachievements.

In total the region – stretching fromIran in the east, through India, Thailandand Hong Kong to New Zealand and Fijiin the west – accounted for 22 per centof the global tourism industry last year, according to figures from the UnitedNations World Tourism Organisation(UNWTO).

More than 200 million international arrivalstouched down during 2010 – some 24million more than in 2009 and 20 millionabove the 2008 pre-crisis peak –generating $249 billion in revenue – or $1,220 per person.

Truly staggering figures.

As is to be expected China was the regionalsuperpower, welcoming 56 million guestslast year. However, other establisheddestinations – including Thailand, Malaysia,Hong Kong and Macau – all welcomed overten million visitors.

Following the culmination of a decades-long civil war, Sri Lanka also saw a surge intourism visitors – with nearly 50 per centmore guests last year than in 2009.

But there have also been challenges.

Nearly 200 people lost their lives in the cityof Christchurch, New Zealand, in Februarythis year, while thousands more were killed

during a devastating tsunami off the coastof Japan in March.

However, neither has derailed thetremendous rate of growth

In the skies over Asia

Malaysia Airlines – recognised last year asAsia’s Leading Airline by the World TravelAwards – has continued to go from strength-to-strength, with membership of theoneworld Alliance secured and over $800million of aircraft ordered from Boeing in thepast few months alone.

Spotlight on

Asia & Australasia

Asia & Australasia was the first region to show signs ofrecovery from the global economic downturn of 2008/09,with tourism boosted by the economic strength ofemerging Chinese and resilient Australian markets.

With new chairman, Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof, also now in place, and a share swap withAirAsia signed to the benefit of both parties,Malaysia Airlines is well positioned to takeadvantage of the booming tourism sector inthe region.

In Japan, All Nippon Airways is – finally –preparing to launch its Boeing 787Dreamliner programme after a number ofdelays. ANA confirmed earlier this year thenew aircraft will be based at NaritaInternational Airport in Tokyo with HongKong expecting to receive the inauguralcommercial flight in October.

“We intend to use the Dreamliner to expandour business, particularly our internationalroutes,” said ANA senior executive vicepresident, Mitsuo Morimoto. “We areaiming to increase our revenues frominternational operations significantly andthe 787 will play an instrumental role inthis.”

Korea Air – which took the title of Asia’sLeading Airline First Class in 2010 – is alsocelebrating a new era following the launchof its first Airbus A380. The inaugural flighttook off in June from Incheon InternationalAirport in Seoul bound for Tokyo baring thecodename KE380 to mark the historicmilestone in the airline’s history. Korean Airhas ordered ten A380 aircraft, with thefirst five to be delivered by the end of2011 and the remaining five by 2014.

On the ground

Asia's Leading Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, has also wasted no time in cementing itsposition at the top of its sector, ordering itstenth ship in ten years from the FincantieriShip Yard. When completed in October2014 the new ship will have a grosstonnage of 132,500 and accommodate4,928 guests in 1,854 cabins. “This neworder, the tenth in ten years, not onlyconsolidates the link between our companyand Fincantieri, but also demonstrates theleadership achieved by Costa Cruises in Asiaand its ability to drive the cruise businessand tourism in general,” said Pier LuigiFoschi, chairman Costa Crociere.

Back on dry land, Raffles Group – whichpresently comprises nine luxuriousproperties around the world – is currentlypreparing for new openings in the Maldives,Indonesia, the Philippines, China and Turkeyover the next two years.

Perhaps the most exciting is the RafflesMakati which will be situated in the heart ofthe Philippines’ fastest growingcosmopolitan centre, Makati City. Theproperty will be a true oasis in the moststunning tower ever built. The hotel willhave just 30 suites, with elegantrestaurants and a fresh perspective on thefamous “Long Bar” at Raffles HotelSingapore. A comprehensive rebrandingexercise at Raffles is also being led by DianaBanks, who was appointed a vice presidentfor sales & marketing in February this year.

Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore, has beenenjoying a strong year after the destinationwas name Asia’s Leading New Resort in 2010.Universal Studios Singapore opened in April tobolster an already stellar selection ofattractions, while the opening of both thenew Equarius Hotel and Marine Life Park in2012 is sure to keep guests coming back formore.

Luxury Asia

Thailand’s Six Senses Resorts & Spas hasrecently seen Yao Noi, Phuket, reopen after amonth of renovation. This follows the launchof Six Senses Laamu, the only resort on thevirtually uncharted Laamu Atoll, earlier thisyear. Both developments will have been notedby World Travel Awards voters as the groupseeks to maintain its title of Asia’s LeadingResort Brand.

Finally, our host this evening, Dusit ThaniBangkok, will be seeking its taste of successfollowing victories for Dusit Thani LagunaPhuket in a number of categories last year. The sister property took the awards forThailand's Leading Beach Resort, Thailand'sLeading Golf Resort and Thailand's LeadingSpa Resort in an unprecedented run ofsuccess in 2010 – with many now wonderingif Dusit Thani Bangkok can emulate theseachievements tonight…

World Islands Awards will take place on the eve on ITB Berlin 2012, withMauritius Tourism Promotion Authoritysigned as the official partner. It is theonly event of its kind dedicated torecognising Island Tourism around the world.

The inaugural ceremony will take place at Hotel Adlon Kempinski, Berlin’s mostexclusive five-star hotel, on 6 March 2012.

The two-year agreement comes hot on the heels of Mauritius being named one of the coolest destinations for 2011 byFuturebrand and British Airways, and beingvoted “World’s Leading Island Destination” at the 2010 World Travel Awards.

Through this partnership, Mauritius willspearhead the drive for the promotion of Island Tourism worldwide, as well asensuring that it remains at the forefront of the luxury tourism map.

The paradise island is currently enjoying a thriving tourism economy under theleadership of Minister of Tourism, HENandcoomar Bodha, and Dr KarlMootoosamy, Director, MauritiusTourism Promotion Authority.

Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director, MauritiusTourism Promotion Authority, said: “Our newpartnership with World Island Awards willserve as an excellent vehicle to promote thecore values of Mauritius Tourism PromotionAuthority – in particular our emphasis onpeople, the environment and the capacity to ensure customer satisfaction.”

The Indian Ocean nation – which is bestknown for its azure waters, white beachesand luxury spas – will also showcase itself as a world-class destination to travelprofessionals and media from around the world.

Graham Cooke, Founder, World Island Awards said: “On behalf of World IslandAwards, I am delighted to have MauritiusTourism Promotion Authority as our partner.
