Relative LocationRelative location is the location of a place in relation to another place. If someone tells you that he or she lives in the northern part of town near the library, that is an example of relative location. On a globe or world map, you can describe Asia’s relative location in relation to other continents. You can also describe Asia’s location in relation to the oceans that surround it.

Absolute Location The absolute location of a place is like its address. Lines on a map or globe called latitude and longitude lines are used to describe exact locations on Earth. Lines of latitude run parallel to the equator. Lines of longitude run between the North and South poles. The lines are numbered, measuring distances in units called degrees. For example, China’s capital city, Beijing, has an absolute location of 39 degrees north latitude, 116 degrees east longitude (39°N latitude, 116°E longitude). You can find the absolute location of specific places in Asia using a projection map, which shows the round Earth on a flat surface and includes lines of latitude and longitude.

HemispheresMost of Asia is located in the Northern and Eastern hemispheres. That is why the absolute location of Beijing includes the letters N and E. They refer to the hemispheres in which Beijing is located.

Tourist AttractionsAsia is a continent filled with breathtaking cultural and historic sites that draw millions of tourists each year. From amazing architecture to ancient places of wonder, Asia contains several world-famous tourist attractions.

Taj MahalThe majestic Taj Mahal in India is a mausoleum, a type of tomb. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. The Taj Mahal took 20,000 workers and 22 years to complete. Its famous dome is made of white marble and is surrounded by a 300-acre garden with pools that reflect the building’s image.

PetraPetra is an ancient city carved into the mountains of Jordan. It was an important stop on the spice trade route and had a population of about 20,000 residents. Although most of the city’s homes were destroyed in earthquakes over time, many of its rock-carved buildings still survive, including theaters and temples. Petra was even featured in the 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

The Great Wall of China When the Great Wall was first built more than 2,000 years ago, it was a series of separate walls constructed by different states. The Great Wall as we know it today was completed during the Ming Dynasty (ad 1368–1644) and stretches 5,500 miles (8,850 km) through China.

Angkor Wat Built in the 12th century in Cambodia, Angkor Wat was built as a Hindu temple and later became a Buddhist temple. Every year, it draws hundreds of thousands of tourists, who marvel at its architecture and the elaborate religious and historical scenes that decorate its walls. The temple is so famous that its image is featured on the Cambodian flag.
