AshtavasuAshtavasusareganadevas,whowereborntoDharmaandVasu,thedaughterofDaksha.SomescripturesalsohaveaversionthattheywerethechildrenofKashyapa.
Their namesareDhara,Dhruva,Soma,Ahas,Anila,Anala,Pratyusha,Prabhasa,asperMahabharataAdiparvaChapter65verses17,18.ButasperVishnupurana,Ansh1Chapter15,theirnamesareApa,Dhruva,Soma,Dharma,Anila,Anala,Pratyusha,Prabhasa,andasper Bhagavata, they are Drona, Prana, Dhruva, Arka, Agni, Dosha, Vasu, Vibhavasu.According toHarivansha, they areAkha,Dhara,Dhruva,Soma,Anila,Anala,Pratyusha,Prabhasa.Itisassumedthattheyarethesamesetknownbyseveralnames.
Once, when they were traveling with their wives, they happened to reach Vasishtashermitage.OneofthewiveslikedVasishtascowNandini,andtopleaseher,herhusbandcarrieditawayalongwithitscalf.Later,aterfailingtofindthecalfnearby,Vasishtausedhisdivinevision to locate it.Having foundoutwhathadhappened,hecursed that thevasuswould be born as humans. The vasus apologised to Vasishta, who said that the sevenvasuswhowerentguiltywouldspendanegligibletimeinhumanform,butApa,whotookthecow would definitely remain human for a very long time. As per DevibhagavataDwitiyaskanda,itwasApawhowaslaterbornasBhishma.
When thevasuswerecontemplating thecurse,Gangaapproached them.They requestedher to takeahumanform,marryaking, becometheirmotherwhenthey took thehumanform,andthrowthemintotheriverassoonastheywereborn.Gangaagreed.

TherewasaChandravanshikingnamedPratipa.Once,whileprayingtoSuryabytheriver,hesawabeautifulwomanemergingfromtheriver.Shecameandsatonhisrightthigh.Hewasdistressedandaskedherwhyshehaddonethis,andwhethershethoughthelustedafterwomen.Healsosaidthattherightthighasmeantfordaughtersordaughtersinlaw.Hetold her that when he had a son, she could perhaps marry him. WhenBhishmafoughtParashuramaonaccountofAmba,thevasus,helpedhimbygivinghimthePraswapastra,asperMahabharataUdyogaparvaChapter183verses1113.
ThefirstvasuwasApaandhissonswereVaithanda,Shrama,Shanta,Dhwani.ThesecondwasDhruva,whosesonwasKala.ThethirdwasSoma,whosesonwasVarchas.Fourthwas Dharma, whose wife was Manohari. Their children were Dravina,HutahavyavahanaShishira, Prana, Varuna. The fifth vasu was Anila who wasmarried toShiva.TheirchildrenwerenamedManojavaandAvijnatagati.SixthwasAgniwhosesonswereKumara,Shakha,VishakhaandNaigameya.PratyshawastheseventhvasuandhissonwasDevala.Varastri,whowasBrihaspatissisterandwasfamousforhertravelsandyogicprowessbecame thewifeofPrabhasa, theeighthvasu.Their sonwas the famousprajapatiVishwakarma,whowasaskilledartisanandpossessed theknowledgeofmanyarts and crafts.
