The Ashtabula Foundation
Working for the Betterment of Ashtabula County
History of Ashtabula Foundation
• The Ashtabula Foundation is a
private, non-profit philanthropic
organization.
• Our Primary Mission: working for
the betterment of Ashtabula
County
Board of Trustees
• Administers funds to reflect the
intent of donors.
• Comprised of long-time Ashtabula
County residents, with a collective
wealth of knowledge and
experience, and more than 140
combined years of service on the
Board.
Foundation Grants
• Grants are provided to area
organizations to meet a wide
range of needs, from start-up
money to fully-funded projects.
• The Foundation often serves as a
pro-active partner with other
organizations, like the Civic
Development Corporation, to
initiate, develop or support
specific programs.
A History of Giving
• Founded in 1922 by prominent
Ashtabula entrepreneur and
philanthropist Rudolf. Henry Pfaff.
• First grants made in 1924 were to
the Community Fund for $300 and
to the YMCA for $100.
A History of Giving
• Since Pfaff’s original $5000
investment in 1922, the
Foundation’s assets have
blossomed to almost 20 million
dollars today.
• In the past decade, more than 50
organizations have received
nearly six million dollars, to
improve their services or facilities
in numerous ways.
Beneficiaries
• Donors establish special funds to
benefit their favorite charity.
• Those beneficiaries forever
receive distributions earned on
the donor’s original investment.
• Beneficiaries include the
Ashtabula County Medical Center,
Ashtabula YMCA and Ashtabula
County students who receive
Harvey Scholarships.
Categories of Giving
• Human Services
• Community Development and
Other Projects

• Recreation/Conservation

Catholic Charities and its HALO
project, Speech, hearing and
Rehabilitation Center, Country
Neighbor program, American Red
Cross and the Salvation Army.
Human Services
• Since 1935, the Foundation has
contributed close to half a million
dollars toward major renovations
at the Ashtabula County Medical
Center, in addition to the annual
distributions given to ACMC and
its predecessor, Ashtabula
General Hospital.
Community Development and Other Projects
• The Civic Development
Corporation has received
Foundation grants for each of its
5-year campaigns since 1970.
• Currently, the Foundation makes
annual contributions in the
amount of $110,000 to the CDC’s
General Campaign and to support
the Partnership for Education in
Ashtabula County initiatives.
Community Development and Other Projects
• Other community organizations
and projects receiving grants
include the “Lights on the Lake”
holiday lighting project at
Lakeshore Park and the Ashtabula
County Animal Protective League.
Education
• The Foundation supports groups
such as ACCESS, After School
Discovery, and PEAC, since the
inception of each program.
• Ashtabula County’s public and
private schools systems receive
grants for renovation and new
construction, playground
equipment and many educational
and extracurricular activities.
Education

recently approved a five-year,
$750,000 grant to Kent State
University-Ashtabula Campus for
its new state-of-the-art Health and
Science Building.
Education
• The Foundation’s Edward J. Harvey
Scholarship Fund, established in
1967, is a four-year scholarship
awarded to at least five Ashtabula
County high school graduates
each year.
• The Foundation is committed to
more than $96,000 in scholarship
payments through 2010.
Recreation/Conservation
• In 2001, the Board approved a
three-year grant to the Ashtabula
County Metroparks, for the
purpose of hiring an administrator
and work toward establishing a
county-wide park system.
• Through the amount of State
grants awarded to the Metroparks,
this original grant leveraged over 1
million dollars to Ashtabula County.
Recreation/Conservation
• Trustees have supported the
Cleveland Museum of Natural History
in purchasing properties in Ashtabula
County for recreational and
educational use as green space.
• The Foundation supports sports,
outdoor and recreational opportunities
for youth including Ashtabula YMCA,
Western Reserve Boy Scouts and
several area Little League
organizations.
Arts/Culture/Historical
• The Foundation supports arts and
culture in the county through funding
local organizations, including the
Ashtabula Arts Center, the Ashtabula
Choral Society and Jefferson Depot
Village Living Museum.
• In 2003, the Board supported efforts
of a committee, responsible for
bringing the historical Freedom
Schooner Amistad to the Ashtabula
Harbor.
Arts/Culture/Historical
• Many Ashtabula County Historical
Societies have been beneficiaries
of Foundation grants for both
capital and program funding.
Religion
• Over the past 10 years, an average of
$100,000 has been granted annually
for churches in Ashtabula County and
the Ashtabula Area Ministerial
Society.
• Grants are used for capital
improvements and religious outreach
programs, including homeless
shelters, food pantries, drug and
rehabilitation programs and youth
programs.
The Grant Process
• Any organization, large or small, may apply for a grant.
• Grant applications may be submitted at any time, and will be considered by category at specific times of the year.
• For details on the grant application process and to obtain our standard application form, write, fax or call us, or visit our website: www.ashtabulafoundation.org.

is not an idea limited to the
wealthy.
• The Ashtabula Foundation is here
for all of those who wish to
participate, in a personal and
meaningful way.
Become a Donor

over time, combined with the
charitable contributions of
concerned individuals, can
dramatically increase the funds
available for future distribution by
the Foundation… and that benefits
all the citizens of Ashtabula
County.
Become a Donor

office, to learn more about making
a bequest or discuss making a
