examination by an ENT Doctor or audiologist if required.

Goal of the Project

To Screen all newborns for early identification with the hearing loss

Project Objective

• To provide OAE screening for 7000 newborn babies after

24hrs of their birth and before their discharge from

hospitals (Public and Trust Hospitals).

• To provide OAE screening for those babies under 3 months

old who without having a hearing screen elsewhere first.

• To provide rescreen OAE for babies who were detected as

‘REFER’ during their initial screening

• To provide BERA screening for all those babies who are

detected as ‘REFER’ during the rescreen of OAE.

• Refer newborn babies who are diagnosed with hearing loss

to Ashray-Akruti’s early intervention centre at S.R. Nagar for

further follow up.

Expected outcome

• Screen 7000 newborn babies with OAE screener

• Provide BERA screening to the “Refer” cases out of 7000

babies screened during initial OAE screening

• Refer newborn babies failed in BERA screening for Early

Intervention services. Based on incidence rate (2 – 6 out of

1000 births) of newborn hearing impairment in India, this

number could range between 14 – 42 newborn babies.

Location : Rural area in Telangana / Andhra Pradesh

Ashray Akruti- An Overview

• Ashray Akruti is a registered non-profit, non-religious organization

working for the hearing impaired children and youth.

• The organization runs Special Education and Rehabilitation Centres ,

Vocational Training in Multimedia and Computer Animation and Community

ear health program for the children and the aged from underprivileged ear health program for the children and the aged from underprivileged

backgrounds.

• The organization offers residential facility for those children who are from

outside Hyderabad
