the Section of clinical Specialists and Scientists (ScSS) represents clinical experts and advocates for practice advancement and improvement in patient care by creating and translating scientific advances into practice. The SCSS serves as the primary community for clinical specialists and scientists within ASHP to encourage, develop, and facilitate involvement and leadership; the creation, dissemination, and publication of scientific and clinical knowledge; the translation of the results of scientific inquiry and integration of scientific advances into practice.

the Section of inpatient care Practitioners (SicP), through its member volunteers, has created opportunities for Frontline pharmacists/Inpatient Care Practitioners/Medication Safety Officers/Investigational Drug Service Pharmacists/OR and Anesthesiology Pharmacists/ Technician Educators/Preceptors and Small and Rural Hospital Healthcare Practitioners, to participate in a number of initiatives while also working with ASHP on other relevant activities.

Section advisory Group on Pharmacy Practice experiences

• Continually updates and maintains its primary resources: How to Start a New Student Rotation and the ASHP Preceptor Tool Kit. both are posted on AShp’s website.

• Collaborated and developed new resources on student rotation templates addressing medication safety, informatics, and leadership.

• Developed webinar: “precepting from the trenches: tools and tips for the Frontline pharmacist.”

• Focused on innovative approaches to expose students to guidelines and standards that significantly impact professional practice as well as the organizations and agencies that affect and regulate these changes.

• Assist with AShp’s advocacy for accredited training and education for pharmacy technicians.

• produced webinar that addressed professional imperative for standardized and accredited technician education, training, and registration.

Section advisory Group on medication Safety• Collaborated with AShp’s educational Services Division

to develop a multidisciplinary medication safety track for the 2012 and 2013 Summer Meetings.

• Developed its sixth webinar in november 2013 as part of its annual Safety Webinar series.

• Other activities include: the continued hosting of networking sessions at both the Summer and Midyear Clinical Meetings; development of the Safety and Quality pearls session; and additional educational sessions at the Midyear Clinical Meeting.

• Contributes to the ‘hot topics’ list, which serves as the basis for the Midyear Clinical Meeting rFps.

the Section of Pharmacy informatics and technology (SoPit) connect with specialists in the practice of pharmacy informatics to share common professional interests and goals. As the use of IT in healthcare and the complexity of medication therapy increases, there has been a correspondingly rapid growth in the specialty practice of pharmacy informatics.

• Conducted a survey on the use of informatics to enhance pharmacy practice Model initiative efforts.

• Developing member resources on Meaningful use of the ehr and monitoring activities from OnC.

Section advisory Group on Pharmacy automation operations

• Collaborative group focused on the safe, interoperable, and efficient use and ongoing maintenance of Medication-use technology including automated dispensing cabinets, carousels, packagers, robotics, smart pumps, bCMA, supply chain, and other related technologies throughout fulfillment, preparation, verification, documentation, and distribution throughout a hospital or health system.

• Continue work on the synchronization of medication formularies to better manage information with multiple systems and hospitals.

• Continue to work with the Association for the Advancement of Medical instrumentation (AAMi) to develop resources on smart pump technology at www.aami.org/htsi/infusion.

• Developing policy and procedure templates for pharmacy automation and technology.

• Completing the ASHP Statement on Telepharmacy.

• Accepted to publish a commentary in AJHP: “interoperability Commentary: At the edge of the information Cliff.”

Section advisory Group on Professional development

• guides the professional development path for the section, which includes determining the skill set and knowledge base for new and seasoned informatics pharmacists as well as assisting with how to deploy the professional development programming. professional development also directs how to approach certification and recognition of the pharmacy informaticist.

• established a column in AJHP, “informatics interchange,” with over 30 publications since June 2008. the following were published this past year:

• Enhancing clinical decision support to improve appropriate antimicrobial use

• Pharmacists’ requirement for continuity of the clinical narrative in the electronic medical record

Section advisory Group on ambulatory care informatics

• Focuses on the systems and related processes that support the medication use process and pharmacists in the care of patients in ambulatory environments and the continuum of care. this includes electronic health records, electronic prescribing, personal health records, medication reconciliation, pharmacist clinical services documentation, reimbursement, and measures derived from these systems.

• published a commentary in AJHP: “Clinical Decision Support for Drug-Drug interaction Checking: What pharmacists Say they Want Changed.”

• Developing tools and resources for members around e-prescribing, medication reconciliation, documentation of clinical services, and allergy documentation.

Section advisory Group on clinical information Systems

• Main focus will be on recommendations and tools to assist pharmacists in the design, implementation, and meaningful use of Clinical information Systems to support clinical and operational workflow, optimize clinical decision support, and promote patient safety and positive health outcomes.

• Developed a mechanism for AShp members to share clinical decision support (CDS) rules.

• published a commentary in AJHP: “Clinical Decision Support Alerts: the need for Collaborative engagement.”

• Developing an AShp guideline on the Design of Clinical Decision Support: Strategic Directions for Drug Database and electronic health records vendors.

Five new practitioners appointed annually by the AShp president, provide strategic guidance for Forum activities and programs as well as advise AShp staff on ways to better meet the needs of new practitioner members.

2014 ASHP AMBuLATORy CARE CONFERENCE AND SuMMIT March 3-4, 2014 in Dallas tX provides 10 hours of continuing education on hot topics and emerging issues in the practice of ambulatory care pharmacy. this event also offers ambulatory care practitioners a unique and valuable opportunity to influence the future of practice through consensus building activities held during the Summit portion of the conference. Our goal is to create a vision for forward thinking pharmacy practice models that will ensure pharmacists are members of the ambulatory healthcare team who are responsible and accountable for patient and healthcare system outcomes. ASHP CONNECT MENTOR MATCH is dedicated to meeting the professional development needs of our members. this unique online networking and career development tool is designed to help members around the world find and connect with one another to establish mutually beneficial mentoring relationships.

THE PPMI HOSPITAL SELF-ASSESSMENT was developed to assess an individual hospital’s conformity with the recommendations from the ppMi Summit. the tool consists of 106 questions assessing adoption of the ppMi recommendations at the hospital level. upon completing the questions, the tool will allow the user to develop a list of priorities (an “Action List”) individualized to their own hospital/health system. hospitals will also have the opportunity to generate reports comparing their data with aggregated data collected from similar hospitals within and across their state. A list of resources will also be provided to assist hospitals in implementing change in their institution at www.ppmiassessment.org.

THE ASHP-SSHP RECOGNITION PROGRAM is offered by AShp to Student Societies of health-system pharmacy (SShps) nationwide as an opportunity for official recognition by AShp. Criteria for recognition encourage SShp activities that promote membership in local, state, and national health-system organizations; stimulate interest in health-system pharmacy careers; and encourage career development and professionalism among students aspiring to careers in health-system pharmacy. visit www.ashp.org/SShp.

ASHP SPECIALTy CERTIFICATIONS has launched a new line of educational offerings from AShp; review courses; recertification products; and Core therapeutic Modules, to help you prepare for a board of pharmacy (bpS) Specialty examination. AShp seeks to support and advance the practice of pharmacists who are medication-use specialists, care providers, and specialists in the ambulatory care settings and across the continuum of healthcare settings. ASHP PHARMACy STuDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (SLD) WORKSHOP was designed by the AShp Section of pharmacy practice Managers in collaboration with the pharmacy Student Forum to assist in developing the future leaders of our profession. the SLD workshop resources are currently designed to support AShp state affiliates based programs, but can be adopted for other settings. Additionally, the SLD Workshop is routinely part of the AShp Summer Meeting student education track.
