Investigator Looking For Alibrandi By Melinda Marchetta 7/3/11

The book ‘looking for Alibrandi’ is about a 17 year old girl living in Sydney in the early 90’s. She mentions in the book ‘Martin Place’ in Sydney where she made a speech for her school. Martin Place is located in Moore street Sydney and is well known world wide. It is a pedestrian mall situated in the busy business district of Sydney and has access to the Sydney railway system. Most of the buildings are beautiful and very old including the iconic Sydney Post Office. Most of Sydney’s largest companies are within this area, including Commonwealth Bank, Channel Seven, and the Reserve Bank. Martin Place contains an Anzac memorial (Cenotaph), fountain, benches, historic buildings and an amphitheatre which hosts many community events.

Why animals are safe in Zoos? (exposition) I believe animals should be kept in zoos because it is a safe environment where trained people can look after them. I have visited a zoo in Australia, where I could see animals up close, which normally you would never see in our everyday lives. My opinion is that these animals look safe and content. Many animals may need urgent care due to injury or sickness. Zoos and vets can help them by protecting them from predators, give them food and they can help animals to repopulate. A great way to boost the tourism industry is to have zoos in Australia. Animals are protected in zoos from predators; they are kept with their family in their ideal habitat and temperature. Per year more than 26.7% of birds are killed by cats. Some animals starve to death because lack of food. Natural disasters cause many animals to die. Such as Sam the koala that was burnt in the black Saturday fires and only wanted a drink. Many animals are kept in zoos to help repopulate and many animals suffer from diseases such as the Tasmanian devil they are going extinct because of an animal cancer. In zoos thousands of people come from everywhere some people have never seen a kangaroo so they can get up close and pat them. Zoos are great way to boost the tourism industry. It is also a great way to meet other countries and have different animals in Australia too. For example ‘The Australia Zoo’ that is run by the famous Irwin family is well known world wide and is visited by people from many different countries. Many animals know their own trainer once they know who their trainer they can start to do tricks. Like the elephants that have learnt to paint and are now producing works of art. Some zoos are open so the animals wander freely and sometimes you can drive or walk through the zoo. When I have visited zoos they have been clean and tidy some of the zoo keepers know their animal’s personality such as the zoo ‘Bernie’s reptiles’. There are emus that if they come and try and peck you. The keepers know to put your arm up as high as you can, higher than the emu and it will stop pecking you. Every year hundreds of animals are left orphaned. If we did not have zoos these animals would not have a safe environment to live in. These animals would either suffer and may even die out in their natural environment or they would have to be put down by a vet. Zoos create a place similar to their natural environment where these orphaned animals can be looked after. Now you can see that animals can be looked after and cared for in zoos. If we didn’t care for many animals, predators would decrease the animal population. Zoos can help to boost the tourism. Orphaned, injured or sick animals would have nowhere to go. So that’s why I believe that animals are safe in zoos.
