The Song

By Madyson 3C

For the 2011-2012 PTA Reflections

Program

Diversity Means we don’t see color, Diversity Means we learn from each other, Diversity Means we all get along And that’s what Diversity Means! Diversity – don’t be a bully. Diversity – think before you speak. Diversity – learn all you can. Diversity – it’s the perfect plan. It’s a great big world with lots and lots of folks. Some people get hurt by hearing some jokes. What I say and what I do makes a big difference to you. So we all need to learn what Diversity Means! …what Diversity Means! Diversity – don’t be a bully. Diversity – think before you speak. Diversity – learn all you can. Diversity – it’s the perfect plan. Diversity Means we love one another, Diversity Means we don’t see color, Diversity Means we learn from each other. Diversity Means we all get along And that’s what Diversity Means! It’s a great big world with lots and lots of folks. Some people get hurt by hearing some jokes. What I say and what I do makes a big difference to you. So we all need to learn what Diversity Means! …what Diversity Means! …what Diversity Means!

WE ARE TRAVELLING

Written by students in Class 3C during the

Music Residency with Timmy Abell

Once there was a time, way down in Charleston,

Houses all burned out, destruction all around, Families torn apart, sadness in the air, Scars of the recent Civil War. We are travelling, looking for a home Through the ruins of the war. We are travelling, looking for a home, Through the ruins of the war. My name is Sarah, never felt so alone, Husband has gone missing in the war, Three little children, what will I do? I wonder what the fight was for. We are travelling, looking for a home, Through the ruins of the war. We are travelling, looking for a home, Through the ruins of the war. Sherman came through town, burned our house to the ground. Nothing left but ashes to our name. Where is my husband, is he still alive? Will our lives ever be the same? We are travelling, looking for a home, Through the ruins of the war. We are travelling, looking for a home, Through the ruins of the war. Passed through many towns on our way to the North, Sleeping in the barns on the hay. Forests have been burned, roadways destroyed, Wounded soldiers all along the way. We are travelling, looking for a home, Through the ruins of the war. We are travelling, looking for a home, Through the ruins of the war. Finally made Columbia saw one familiar face, Children ran to greet their father dear. Family reunited, together once again, Hearts are filled with joy, no more fear. We were travelling, looking for a home, Through the ruins of the war. Faith and hope forever more.

I AM SUCH A DREAMER

Written by the students in Class 3D during

the Music Residency with Timmy Abell

Wish I was an artist with a very unique style,

A whole lot like Picasso, his cubics make me smile. I would be so famous, on the coast of Spain. They would put my picture in the Hall of Fame. I am such a dreamer, what will I do next? I would try most anything to keep myself perplexed, To keep myself perplexed. Oh, and by the way, I like this even more, I might be a soldier in the Civil War. I would march to battle, every day and night, Fighting for the Union to set this country right. I am such a dreamer, what will I do next? I would try most anything to keep myself perplexed, To keep myself perplexed. Natural disasters fill me with delight. Call me a storm chaser; I chase them day and night. Give me a tornado, a hurricane or two, Tsunamis, floods and earthquakes, Are what I love to do. I am such a dreamer, what will I do next? I would try most anything to keep myself perplexed, To keep myself perplexed. A knight in shining armor that’s what I would be, In Medieval England in 1333. I would guard the castle upon my silver steed, Risk my life for my queen and my noble king. I am such a dreamer, what will I do next? I would try most anything to keep myself perplexed, To keep myself perplexed. Looking for a diamond in a crystal cave, In the wilds of Africa, I would be so brave.

Sell it for a fortune; give it to the poor, Love to be a dreamer, Who could ask for more? I am such a dreamer, what will I do next? I would try most anything to keep myself perplexed, To keep myself perplexed. What will I do next? What will I do next? What will I do next?

Third Grade Color Poems White Logan 3A A new fallen snow in a forest of trees. A cloud drifting through the sky on a breeze. It sounds like the wind rustling a tree, Or a mellow voice talking to me. It sounds like bird calls. Tee-tee! It is the sweet smell of a white daisy. The smell of meadow grass being carried through the breeze. A magnolia gently dancing free. White is a simple plain color, But at the same time carries mystery. It brings a crisp fresh feeling to every day. It is a blank canvas ready to be filled with wonder. It is a new beginning. It tastes soft and fluffy like cotton candy. Pure white sugar. Like white vanilla ice, Or like an angel floating through a dream. Finding a white seashell at the beach. Heaven is white: the angel’s wings, The clouds in which they fly, The clothing, The lace, All seems so familiar yet so different and mysterious. Just like white.

The Unicorn Kaleigh 3A Unicorns are very cool! They are not very cruel. But if you mess with them you won’t know what to do. They might jump in the pool! And they might drool! And maybe come in the school. I would like a unicorn as a friend. I know I would be friends ‘til the end. I would ride my unicorn to school. I know I would look very cool! We would play very nice and eat shrimp fried rice! The unicorn is my school’s mascot and I like that a whole lot!

Follow the Drinking Gourd

Lauren 4A Run child, run to freedom with your family. I will guide you. Take yourself as far as your little feet can carry you until you get to the next safe house. You will know if it’s safe by seeing a lantern. You need to follow with North Star. Deep in your heart somewhere you have faith to go on. Just remember that when the first quail calls and the sun comes down, follow the Drinking Gourd. If you don’t want them to catch you, wait in the waters to lose your scent. Oh no! They’re catching up! There’s the next safe house. Stay there until morning and then ask for a ride! Wake up quietly so you do not wake up the watch dog! Come on my child! You can make it! You’re almost there! At last you made it to freedom!

Follow the Star Hannah 4A Run child! It’s time! Yes, child, listen to me and I will guide your path. Come into the forest where I will cover you with a blanket of safety child! Bounty hunters are

coming! Keep calm and wade in the water. Enjoy the coolness. They are gone. Sleep child. Wander into dreamland. Wake child! There is a safe house ahead. Look for colorful quilts and bright lanterns. I promise, freedom will taste sweet.

The Butterfly

By Roey 5B It soared against the pale yellow sky, Its cobalt wings burst bright against the snowy white clouds, Like sapphires embedded in the purest silver, I laid with the hard-packed red clay pressing against me, Staining my skin, my hair, my clothes, But I didn’t care, That one butterfly was my whole world, A diamond in my hands, And I was trying desperately to keep it from slipping, Through the cracks in between my fingers, As it swooped closer, My heart fluttered like those fragile, perfect wings, Because it was the most beautiful, untouched, unscarred thing, I had ever seen, I couldn’t move for fear of terrifying it away, Into some dark, quiet corner, Where my eyes would never taste its blissful beauty again, Still frozen upon the ground, I waited, And it came, in all its glory, To rest upon my hand, My eyes saw each detail, Its wings an unrealistic shade of blue, Etched with a hundred jet black lines, That formed such a flawless pattern, My eyes were frozen upon them, And when it beat its wings and flew away, I thought that I might weep, But instead my heart filled with joy, Because how many other people in the world, Have really, and I mean really, Seen a butterfly?

My Special Place Claire 5B Have you ever had a special place? Where you can let all your worries go, and relax. the woods is my special place. It’s peaceful and the weather is great for camping, and fishing. You can hear grasshoppers, cicadas, and birds making noises. You can see trees all around you. You can view wild beautiful flowers that are big, bright, purple, pink, orange, and yellow. If you are quiet you may encounter deer and other wildlife like black water snakes slithering through the black charcoal like water. Seldomly you will get a quick glance at a black bear and cubs. The burning fire wood whirls into your nostrils. Nice, cool refreshing air touches your skin. the fresh scent of flowers and the smoke coming from the cabins down the road. When I’m there I feel safe and happy seeing all the wildlife, and natural habitats. My special place makes me feel warm, comfortable, and cozy. Grilled hot dogs make your mouth water. We cook large chocolate s'mores. Sweet honey suckles melt in your mouth. You can eat great, fried fish from the grill. If you are lucky you might be able to snick a Hershey’s bar. Thanks for letting me share my special place. I’m happy to share my special place with you. This place helps me let my worries go and reminds me of the beauty of nature.

My Special Deer Stand Kayla Hull 5D Bang! That is the sound of gunshot in my special place, a deer stand. It’s a place I go to hunt deer. I see many other animals besides just deer. I usually go with my dad. I will go one either here in Charleston or Aubrun, Alabama. This is special to me because I like going outside and doing stuff with my dad. My special place would sound quiet and calm. When there is a deer nearby, you can hear their hooves walking on the colorful, crunchy leaves or even the quiet sound of a tiny twig breaking. You can hear crows squawking and snakes slithering. Sometimes I hear the

sound of my old gun shooting at something in the woods. You may hear the calm sound of the deer caller. But at the end, you can hear the happy cheering of another hunter getting a deer too! You can feel the cold wind blowing. Sometimes you can feel spiders crawling on you. You might even feel the leaves from a tree sticking in from the side. Sometimes leaves from above the stand fall on you. Also, you can feel the gun up against my shoulder. When I go, I can smell the corn that has been put out for the deer. Sometimes I can’t smell anything at all because the coldness has frozen my nose. I don’t like that at all! I may be able to smell the nasty smell of the dirty deer stand. This isn’t very pleasant either. A deer stand is special to me because I like being outside and relaxing to the quiet outdoors. But, I also like the excitement of being able to have fun while being outside with my dad. I like going whether I get a deer of not. All that matters is that I have fun. I always do.

Charleston Mary Grace Sirisky Charleston can be bright as the sun Or dark as the night The beaches are dazzling With sand smooth as silk The streets are littered with trash and filth Some people are good Some people are bad But through it all Charleston will always be Beautiful to me

This is Charleston Jacob 5D Under the Palmetto Flag flying so high tucked away down south, steeped in history lies old Charles Towne. Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, Final resting place of the C.S.S Hunley. This is Charleston – land that I love. Cougars and Bulldogs teach a thing or two.

Ah yes, there really is more to South Carolina than just Tigers and Cocks. This is Charleston – land that I love. Scouts sleep under the glistening starts at Camp Ho Non Wah While sweating like pigs in the oh so sweltering heat as our new “state bird,” the mosquito, stakes out a treat. Can’t take the heat? Give it a week. Like all things, this too will change. This is Charleston – land that I love. Looking to relax? Beautiful beaches and waves that crash as seagulls sing and dance in the breeze overhead. This is Charleston – land that I love. Oh, the sports fan I am. Yes, Charleston’s got game! Home to Stingrays, the River Dogs, and the Battery too. Fans pack the stands and cheer like a train just rambling through. This is Charleston – land that I love.

Charleston Gray 5A Charleston, the waves rolling upon the beach, The sparkling sand under my feet, As beautiful as the gleaming sunset. Charleston, the palm trees swaying back and forth on the Battery’s edge, The marsh an ocean prairie, The muddy water, as dark and silent as the night sky. If I were to be taken away from Charleston, it would be a nightmare, For the beach is where I belong. The beach is inside of me, Along with the Charleston weather and wind, The sandy beaches and the swaying palm trees, Charleston is in my blood.

Charleston is my home, my home sweet home!

This Divine Hometown of Mine Eliza 5B You and I walk down next to the silent sun-set reflecting sea. Salty waves hit our ankles, crashing, crying, dying before the next rush returns The rough shifting sand beneath us Sounds like benny wafers. They crunched as we taste their loving flavor. We heard the horse’s hooves on the stone laid road below and the whispers of cannons booming and soldiers wailing from a time long before us. The Ravenel Bridge, and church spires pierce the Holy City’s horizon. Pirates, slaves and soldiers have tread on the soil beneath our feet. Forts, plantations, and gardens consume us with history. The open market is a melting pot of artistic cultures. The Gullah women weave their intricate sweetgrass baskets. My neck and wrists are decked with treasures handmade. We strolled past old homes radiating a spectrum of color I wonder “If we uncover all of Charleston’s secrets, will ever leave this divine hometown of mind?”

Charleston Roey 5B Trapped in a timeless charm, The waters shiner by your shores, And the sunlight reflects your spirit, On the deep blue ocean waves, In your crooked cobblestone streets, The ghosts of the past live through the people of today, And you are living, breathing,

The Unicorn Press Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary Peace, Love, Art and Soul 2012

11

In what you mean to the world, With ivy growing up your walls, Creeping towards your sweet blue sky, That is lighted with a bright white sun, Unlike any other, Herons grace the tall reeds of your marshes, As redfish flip in your creeks, Their silver tails flickering in the water, Like whips on a horse’s back, And beneath the great oaks of your forests, The graceful deer roam wild, And so does my soul, In your wet, sticky heat, Our spirits dance in your old brick alleys, Charleston, you set us all free.

Sightseeing In Charleston Steven 5B Sightseeing in Charleston is the place to be. Looking for the Marketplace so that you can see the wonderful street performers playing for us. Walking down the busy street you see a city bus. You go to the Battery and feel the ocean breeze. The hot sun smiles and the light makes you sneeze. You hear the horse clip-clopping on a casual carriage ride. You get off fulfilled with a lot of Carolina pride. You see colorful houses and say, “Hey, it’s Rainbow Row!” Then you get back to your car and see you need a tow.

Summers in Charleston Stephen H. 5C Summers are hot, but winter is not. The sun is bright and, it’s shining in my sight. The sun is a big firey basketball in the sky. Summers are hot, who oh why?

Kids are in the pool, while I’m staying cool. I’m as dry as the sun. Oh I’m having fun. Charleston is as hot s the sun. Other kids are playing with water guns. Oh how I love summers in Charleston.

Fishing Julian 5D Fishing is to feel free as the wind, Or be one with nature. To feel the fish tugging at your line. Meet people like you. Talk about that common interest. Fry up some fish. Taste that nice salty whitefish. That screaming rod Recalling that fight it put up. The sleep like a baby.

Charleston’s Sounds of the Season Jeremy 5A Spring The sound of birds chirping in the sky like tiny whistles being blown, and squirrels running around in the trees. Summer the sound of waves crashing like powerful kings, and the fan spinning in the blistering heat. Fall The sound of the leaves crunching under your feet like crumbling pieces of paper, and the hammers hammering in the panic to get all the Christmas decorations hung. Winter The sound of the wind blowing like the rush of air when riding a bike and Christmas bells ringing in the distance. All of these things sound great and they are! So come and visit so you can hear for yourself!

Charleston Zachary 5B Where the Palmetto trees sway on the shore, whispering like children at play, the beach is a fun place to go. The waves licking your toes as you stand in the orange-pink sunset. Catch some action if you go to Charles Towne Landing, where reenactments are very interesting. See some color and design, for when you drive past Rainbow Row, you’ll simply be amazed. Charleston is a wonderful place, I hope you come someday.

Video Games Frederic 5A I love games. They are very special to me always. My life is an electronic place that’s filled with excitement. My games are like cigarettes which are super addictive. They will laugh and giggle and so will I. I can play and play and the fun will never end. My eyes are filled with pain if I play too much so I have to endure it every day. With enough power, I can control the amount I play. I don’t know why, but life for me wouldn’t be the same without electronic things to play on. The devices I plan can be anything as long as it has entertainment. Why I love games? They entertain me when I’m bored. Maybe you will be like me someday. A kid who has the urge to play.

War and Peace Michael 5D War and peace and all that junk is just so much to fret. Our parents say to us, that we won’t understand. To me I think they’re right because the story’s as big as France. But for you I’ll sum it up and tell you how it ends. This story speaks to you, as though it intends.

Big, tall men in long, tall trenches shooting here and there. Dropping bombs across the map just to scare. Or wiping out an empire like a blazing fire. Massacring innocent people, just not to be a dire. War and peace and all that junk is just hard to understand. All these men are fighting, just to defend? They ceasefire, and decide to be friends. The it starts all over again and that’s how war begins.

Losing Something Special Anna 5B Losing something special is like someone ripping part of your heart out, slowly and painfully. When you lose something special you feel terrible, horrified and cursed. For you have lost part of your heart and can’t find it. It is the beheading of your love, for you have lost something special. Times are tough, times are hard, but it is love that has you in cuffs. Love is a mess you can’t clean up. I know what it feels like to lose something special. You are just like me; we go through pain beyond ones’ dreams. It is pain that only you and me can see. When you lose something special for the first time I want you to know this is just the beginning.

The Fun in Snow Haley 5B Can you believe it? It’s snowing in Charleston. Look outside. The wind is howling on a usual winter day. The snow is yelling, calling my name and says, “Come play!” My friends are waiting for a battle of snow to determine who is the best. My ice skates are yearning to join the fun. It gets too cold enjoy some hot chocolate with melted marshmallows. The steam is relaxing and makes you drowsy, But the snow calls for you to sled on its beautiful hills. The snow angels are perfect, and then covered with snow. Oh, what a precious day of fun.

The Unicorn Press Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary Peace, Love, Art and Soul 2012

The snowmen are built with the best carrots in town. The school called to declare there’s no school. That’s just the thing to make this day perfect. This once-in-a-lifetime moment was amazing, And the family is crammed near the fireplace. But it makes you closer as one.

Wesley Katie 5B Wesley the lab Crazy as a clown He’s the cutest dog in town His ears are as soft as velvet Who does he love the best? Katie and his vet Just be careful and watch your back He just might jump on you As big as he is, he is the sweetest baby His eyes say “Can I lick you?” I care for him a lot That’s why he loves his Katie

Homeless People Amani 5A They sit there cold They beg for food And warmth. I wonder How they got there. People who pass Them by are as Rotten as Ebenezer Scrooge. I wonder “What if I were them.” They are as dirty as a rat. Homeless people shouldn’t be homeless. Not giving someone what they need is a bullet Going through your soul.

Mom & Dad Cooper Lightsey Thanks dad you make me feel good you make me happy just like I should.

We connect together, like a dog to a bone. You help me work out and work to the bone but that’s alright, because you make my muscles like stone. You are always so cool because you always sit by when I am on our stool. You are always so connected like a nerd to Facebook. Dad, Dad you make me feel good We are always going to be connected, like a beaver to wood. I love my Dad he will never make me sad. He will only make me glad forever. Mom oh how I love you too, You always make me WOO. You always let me stick to you like glue. I love you because you are awesome and nice And you have great spice in fashion, And you are always full of compassion. When I need your help you are always there, Because you always care. You are also a big help Because you usually clean up my underwear. I wouldn’t write this if I didn’t care. I love you guys, So much, anytime, anywhere.

Dear Journal Molly 5A May 14, 1913 Dear Journal, The ship I am on rocks back and forth. I get dizzy and nauseous. I know this is going to be a tough journey. I am 11 years old. I have come from Russia with my parents. We are heading to Ellis Island. My family could barely afford this journey. We wanted to take this journey so badly, my father robbed a bank. Although we were very ashamed, we felt it was something we had to do. I have just finished the first week of my two week journey. So far the trip has been horrible. this ship has a strong stench of vomit and sweat. Babies are crying and wailing. I was excited before getting on the ship, for I knew all the freedom I would experience. I stayed in steerage class on the ship. the food was old and some rotten. We slept in bunk beds that wobbled while you

slept. Although the journey is tough, I believe it will be worth it. Sincerely, Natasha Dobrynin

Dear Journal Savanna 5A May 28, 1919 Dear Journal, In my old country, my mom, dad and I lived in Russia. My mom owned a sewing store. She makes all my clothes. My father is a tailor. When I was in Russia, I had only one friend. His name is Lucia, but I called him Luke. When I found out we were moving to some place called ‘America’ I was so devastated. I said, “I don’t want to! I will not have any friends.” I asked why we were moving to America. My father said we were moving to America because we would have more freedom. I felt better, but only a little. He also said we would be leaving tonight! When I was packing, I brought a few toy trucks that I made, a teddy bear, and all of my clothes. I was ready to go. We got to the port in the next hour. We took a train there. It was raining outside the window. That made it a little bit more sad. We were able to afford the highest deck since mom and dad had owned a store. I felt a little bad for the lowest deck. They don’t have much food. They must be starving. Well, we are boarding now. Love Olga D.

Unicorn Mascot Stories Molly-Kate 1E Once upon a time a unicorn was magical. The unicorn ran to a school named Ashley River Creative Arts and came the mascot of the school! When the big kids and the little kids went to school and they saw the unicorn they laughed and giggled and would play with it. I love the unicorn!

Alyssa 1E

The unicorn is a magical creature that must not leave its home. If it does it could be hunted, trapped or even killed. That’s why there are not very many left in the world. If you see a unicorn, don’t hurt it! And don’t make a sound or you will scare it.

Emily 1E The unicorn is my school’s mascot. It sores with a silver mane chasing a pink butterfly. One day I had pain. but when I saw that unicorn my body did such a change. That pain went away! It went away in such a quick way! Then I asked it, may I have a ride? So he set his silver mane aside, and gave me a perfect ride!

Clara 1E Long ago in the deep woods there was a magical creature. It was a unicorn! As you know, unicorns are magical. But this one was weak. Ms. Ellicott took the unicorn and took it to Ashley River and now it is standing in the atrium.

Giovanni 1E Once upon a time there was a unicorn. He didn’t have a friend. The unicorn was playing with nothing. He was trying to find a friend. But he couldn’t find one. But then another unicorn walked up and started playing with him!

A Fabulous Beach Trip Maggie K102 Yahoo! On Friday we went to the beach. When we got to Kiawah beach it stopped raining. First we went down to the beach. Next we saw reptiles and after we saw the reptiles we ate lunch. After that we played on the playground. Then we got on the bus and went back to school. I love Kiawah.

The Beach Naimah K102 Yey! We went to Kiawah on Friday. We had a bucket and shovel. We made a circle and we picked a jellyfish and we played in the sand. We got to hold a real fish. We got to touch a horseshoe crab and we ate on the playground. Oh boy! I just love the beach.
