NC AIG Program Standards
Background Information
History: NC has had legislation related to AIG, close to fifty years. No federal legislation.
Current: Article 9B, N.C.G.S. § 115C-150.5-.8, mandates identification and services for AIG students; local plans to be written; and provides a state definition.
AIG Program Standards: Adopted by SBE, 2012-1013 and revised in October 2015. These standards guide our local AIG Programs and Plans. (New AIG Plan 2016-2019)

St 2: Differentiated Curriculum and Instruction (What)
• Develop expectations in all classrooms for differentiation of core
instruction for gifted learners
• AIG Specialists support classroom teachers with implementing strategies
to extend, enrich, and accelerate AIG students
• AIG Specialists plan with classroom teacher regularly to ensure best
practices are being used to address AIG students’ needs
• Outlines cluster grouping practices at the elementary (4-5) and middle
(6-8) to support differentiation for AIG identified students with group

• Asheboro City Schools provides an array of K-12 programs
and services to meet the diverse academic, intellectual, social and emotional needs of gifted learners.
• AIG specialists collaborate with school counselors to address
social and emotional needs of AIG students
• Connects AIG services to the class opportunities, the enrichment experiences, and social and emotional support

St 5: Partnerships
• Asheboro City Schools maintains partnerships with parents/families,
community, institutes of higher education, and industry
• Continue on-going communication with stakeholders through AIG
Advisory Council, stakeholder surveys, and open forums
• To ensure ongoing and meaningful participation of stakeholders in
the planning and implementation of the local AIG program to
develop strong partnerships through an annual AIG Advisory Team
meeting

◦ Implements, monitors, and evaluates the local AIG
program and plan to ensure that all programs and services
are effective in meeting the academic, intellectual, social,
and emotional needs of gifted learners
◦ Monitor the implementation of the ACS AIG Plan
◦ Analyze the effectiveness of the AIG services using
multiple sources of data
AIG Services: Elementary
•AIG Specialist will collaborate and plan with classroom teachers on a regular
basis.
•AIG Specialist will support teachers and students in order to provide differentiated
instruction, resources, and materials. This may include co-teaching, flexible
grouping, seminars, literature circles.
•AIG Specialist will be an advocate for all AIG students.
•AIG Specialist will help facilitate elementary expert project process for AIG
students.

Lindley: Thursday, Friday, every other Wednesday

Expert Projects
The Expert Project is an expectation of all AIG students in grades 4-5. Students will choose a topic based on the Science or Social Studies standards for their grade level.
Components:
Written: Research Paper – Due February 15, 2017
Visual Presentation due April 13, 2017: How will you summarize your findings?
Presentation can be technology based, presentation board, or other with teacher approval.
Expert Fair – April, 27th 2017 5:00-6:00 at Lindley Park
Possible Expert Project Topics
4th grade topics:
North Carolina: state symbols, city, historical locations, historical figures, influential people in North Carolina, local history/government
Science: force and motion, magnets, electricity, states of matter, rock/minerals, food/nutrients, ecosystems, recycling, fossils
5th grade topics:
Social Studies: American history, historical figures, US major conflicts and battles, technological advances in US, migration/immigration patterns, economic, US American eras (Great Depression, etc.), financial literacy, turning points in American history, US government functions and principles of democracy, US culture, US diversity, settlement patterns
Science: weather systems, forces/motion (gravity), water cycle, energy exchange, conduction/convection, radiation, weather patterns, weather phenomena, human body systems, plant and animal adaptions, genetics and evolution
AIG Services: Middle School
• AIG Specialist collaborate and plan with AIG cluster classroom teachers (ELA/Math) weekly.
• AIG Specialist support teachers and students in order to provide differentiated instruction, resources, and materials.
• AIG Specialist will be an advocate for all AIG students.
• Middle school is a transitional program. AIG specialist may include differentiation through co-teaching in Math and Language Arts classrooms or small group work.
