ABOUT THE AMERICAN STOCK HORSE ASSOCIATION

The American Stock Horse

Association was chartered as a

nonprofit organization in 2008.

The Association is dedicated to

enhancing the pleasure of

Don’t we all like to get credit for the hard work we put in training and showing our horses? With ASHA’s Merit System, the horse and rider team are awarded merit points for outstanding performances.

The current merit point scheme seeks to award the hard work and dedication of committed ASHA members.

How does it work? The points structure awards horse and rider combinations in both the Open and Non Pro divisions of approved American Stock Horse Association shows.

Merit points may only be awarded in one division at any one show.

The horse/rider combination must show in all four classes for their division, and the number of points awarded is based on the number of entries in the All-Around or High Point division, up to a

maximum of ten (10) points. Can you change riders

and still receive points? A horse may receive points with more than one rider, but the points cannot be combined for more than one rider nor can points be transferred to another rider.

Horses that change riders must start over in accumulating points for the Superior and Supreme Awards.

What are the top Merit Award Honors? Horse/Rider Teams may receive Superior and Supreme Awards for excellent performances.

To receive a Superior Stock Horse Versatility Award, a horse/rider team must earn at least 100 ASHA Merit Points at ASHA approved shows in the All-Around of either the Open or Non Pro divisions.

Merit Points earned from the two different divisions may be combined as long as they are

earned at different shows. Records of the points are kept and certificates are presented to the rider (and the owner, if different from the rider).

The same is true for the Supreme Stock Horse Versatility Award, except that at least 200 ASHA Merit Points must be earned. !

Ryan’s parents Steve and Joann Parry in Northeast Colorado. They raise corn, alfalfa,

and registered Angus cattle. She grew up on her godparent’s ranch outside of Sterling,

Colorado where she was

introduced to horses at

an early age. Her mom

was instrumental in

teaching her a solid

foundation of good

horsemanship practices

that still help her today.

! Currently, Emily

works for the family

operation when needed,

ring stewards major breed

shows across the country,

and manages events for

the CRCA (Colorado

Reined Cow Horse Association). She truly enjoys showing her horses in the ASHA,

AQHA, and NRCHA. She’d like to thank Marilyn Peters for doing such a wonderful

job on “Curly,” (Peptomatic Lee) who was purchased from the Peters’ training

operation located in Edmond, OK; Cody Crow for his amazing job as a coach all these

years; and, of course, husband Ryan, the family, and treasured close friends for all of

their unfailing support.

American StockHorse AssociationAffiliates

Region 1Oklahoma Stock Horse Association

The Oklahoma Stock Horse Association was started by a group of people interested in promoting the American Stock Horse Association’s philosophy and mission of creating better horses and better horsemen. The OkSHA was established as a nonprofit Oklahoma organization in August of 2009. They applied and were accepted as an affiliate of the American Stock Horse Association shortly thereafter.

Region 2Alabama Stock Horse Association

The purpose of the Alabama Stock Horse Association is to provide opportunities for horsemen and horsewomen to learn to train and show a horse that is broke, relatively safe, and versatile enough to do whatever a person wants to do with it. We want to help riders “git r done” with their horses whether they are rich or poor, old or young, expert or amateur. We will find a way to include a person in our program and help them ride a better horse no matter what their skill level or level of income may be. ALSHA was formed in 2009.

Tennessee Stock Horse Association The Tennessee Stock Horse Association (TnSHA) strives to help our members ride better horses by creating better horsemen and strengthening the relationship between horsemen and their horses. The Tennessee Stock Horse Association was formed in 2012.

Region 5CoWN Stock Horse Association

The CoWN Stock Horse Association promotes events throughout Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska, including;  shows, clinics and premiere events.  CoWN was formed in 2010. In November 2012, CoWN hosted the first Region 5 Championship Finals at the National Western Events Center  in Denver, Colorado. This premier event also included the ASHA World Championship Futurity and Derby. In December 2013, CoWN hosted the inaugural American Stock Horse Association National Championships.  The National Show was held in conjunction with the Region 5 Showdown, again including the limited aged events World Championship Futurity and Derby.

Region 6Western States Stock Horse

Western States Stock Horse (WSSH) was chartered as a nonprofit organization in 2011 and represents Region 6 of the American Stock Horse Association. Region 6 consists of nine states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. The mission of WSSH is to assist its members to improve horse and horsemanship skills through education and competition in a safe and enjoyable environment, while also preserving the traditions of the American Stock Horse.

FOUNDING SPONSORDedicated to Raising Quality Livestock

Champion Ranch is located on 6,000 beautiful acres in Centerville, Texas. It is a family owned ranch with four generations of the Wallraths living there. The ranch is known for producing the highest quality of commercial cattle for buyers. They pride themselves in having highly maintained pasture land for the cattle as well as having the best facilities. In the last two years, the ranch has been developing a 30-acre peach orchard with plans to increase to 100 acres.

They are a purebred Brangus Cow-Calf operation. With a cow herd of over 1,000 head, they understand the stresses of today’s market and know the importance of producing an efficient and cost effective product for their customers. Many of their feeder calves are tracked all the way through the feedlot, giving the information needed to stay on top of the beef market.

Our goal, with horses, is to produce a horse that has the genetics, confirmation, disposition

(trainability), athletic ability, and soundness to be either a successful show horse or a great ranch horse. For more information..please call Luke Cearley, Cattle and Horse Manager, 979.412.2027.

Joby Priest Hailing #om Las Cruces, New Mexico, Joby Priest is the new president of the American Stock Horse Association. Joby has been on the ASHA Board of Directors since 2009, and held the office of vice president since 2012.  He currently works for New Mexico State University, where he is the horse farm manager, a co'ege instructor, and NMSU Ranch Horse Team coach. Before working for NMSU, he trained horses in Colorado and New Mexico. Joby has won multiple world championships and trained youth and amateurs to the same.  He also has put on educational clinics worldwide. Please welcome 2014 ASHA President Joby Priest.

In his own words. . .I was born in eastern New Mexico and raised around livestock. At a young age, I started working with horses, and before long, it turned into a career. I have an Associates of Applied Science degree in Horse Training and Management from Lamar Community College, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Extension Education from New Mexico State University.

I have trained horses professionally for the past 18 years. To date, I have won three world championships and two reserves, and coached youth to eight more world championships and five reserves in the Palomino Horse Breeders Association. I have won points in eight events, and qualified for the American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show several times. I also have two top ten finishes at the American Paint Horse Association World Championship Show and have put on clinics in the United States and Europe.

Currently, I am the horse farm manager at New Mexico State University, and an instructor of equine sciences. I also am fortunate enough to coach the NMSU Ranch Horse Team which was reserve national champion at the American Stock Horse Association Collegiate Championship Show in 2009 and third in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR ASHA MEMBERS

Ask Tracie McVay of Pine Mountain, Georgia about her favorite breed of horse and you’ll get a one-word answer: Mustangs!

A long time rider and lover of registered and well-bred AQHA Quarter Horses, Tracie happened upon the Mustang when a friend encouraged the second generation trainer to compete in a Mustang Makeover.

With that experience and their win, Tracie fell in love with the wild horse called the American Mustang.

She admires their intelligence and tendency to

develop a deep bond with their owner or trainer.

And the love of the Mustang runs in the family. Tracie’s daughter, Madeline, has a Mustang named Mighty Mouse whom she has trained and shown to several wins, including the recent Alabama Trail Horse Competition.

Like mother, like daughter! Tracie trained and rode Maverick, a TIP horse, to win ASHA’s High Point Mustang award, a saddle sponsored by the Mustang Heritage Foundation.

Tracie says that she started showing in ASHA because it’s one of a few places an unregistered Mustang can be shown. She encourages those interested to seriously consider adopting, training, and showing a Mustang in the ASHA.

Tracie believes it will be a decision you won’t regret when you “Save a Horse, Adopt a Legend, and Become Amazed!”
