Ellen Grass Guest LecturePresented by Tim Pedley, MD

“Ellen Grass: Her Contributions andRelevance to ElectroneurodiagnosticTechnology”

Dr. Timothy Pedley and Ellen Grass are widelyrecognized as pioneers who contributed much tothe knowledge and growth of the profession.ASET is privileged to bring Dr. Pedley to the podium as he shares insightinto the contributions of Ellen Grass and how she helped shape ENDtechnology - and the lessons we can still learn from her.

TIMOTHY PEDLEY, MD, is the chairman of the Department of Neurologyat Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons andNeurologist-in-Chief at the Neurological Institute of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia University Medical Center in New YorkCity. He has devoted his entire professional career to epilepsy and hasmade both basic laboratory and clinical contributions to the field. He isperhaps best known in our field as the co-author of the book, CurrentPractice of Clinical EEG, now in its third edition.

THURSDAY, JULY 19 • 9 - 10 AMKathleen Mears Guest LecturePresented by Walt Banoczi, R. EEG/EP T.,RPSGT, CNIM

“The Magic of Becoming an ENDTechnologist”

Walt Banoczi has been an END technologyprogram director for the past 10 years, and hasseen many students through the educationalprocess to help them realize their goal ofbecoming END technologists. Walt will recount the many rewards ofhelping students achieve their career goals; talk about the promisingfuture of END education; and challenge us with the many opportunitiesto help us “grow” enough technologists to meet the demand.

WALT BANOCZI worked as an END technologist for a number of yearsbefore becoming the Program Director of the Orange Coast CollegeNeurodiagnostic and Polysomnographic Technology Programs. He hasserved on the ASET Board of Trustees, ASET Education Committee and theABRET Board of Directors. He has also received the ASET Theda SannitOutstanding Educator Award and the Maureen Berkeley Award for the bestarticle submitted to the American Journal of END Technology.

Tips for making the most out of yourAnnual Conference experience . . .There are so many choices when you look at the ASET annual conferenceschedule! If you really want to make the most out of your time at thisconference, it will take some forethought and planning. We have includeddescriptions of each lecture to help you understand the content of each talk. Here are some helpful hints:

Plan your daily schedule before you arrive.Take a look at all the subjects offered and highlight those that will help you the most inadvancing your career. People tend to choose topics that are familiar to them, whenexploring new territory is often more interesting and may help you develop new skills. If you need a break from technical topics, try one of the lectures in the ProfessionalDevelopment Course.

Take a look at the handout selection in advance. This year we plan to make handouts available on our Website to attendees who haveregistered for the courses in advance of the conference. This will help you get a betteridea of what the lectures will cover. When you arrive at the conference this year, youwill receive a CD with all of the handouts from all of the courses, but printed handoutswill be available only in the meeting rooms at the start of each lecture.

Listen to presentations rather than try to match slides with handouts. Our faculty take great pride in sharing information with you and want you to see thebest they have to offer. Since our handout deadline is more than two months beforethe conference, they often add the latest examples or case studies to their slidepresentation after the handouts have been turned in. This is why the slides do notmatch the handouts at times. Keep in mind that handouts are a tool, but listening andenjoying the slide presentations are more important. Don’t worry about following ahandout page by page and missing the best part of lectures!

THURSDAY, JULY 19 • 1:30 - 3 PM

The ASET 2007Symposium - Why, When, Where, How?Using Evidence Based Practice toImprove END Technology

Symposium Presenters:Lewis Kull, MA, R. EEG/EP T.Janice Walbert, R. EEG/EP T.Lucy Sullivan, R. EEG T.

Evidence Based Practice is a current conceptthat has widespread effect on the delivery oftoday’s health care, and has changed theway credentialing exams are designed. Ashealth care professionals, we can putevidence-based practice to use every day ifwe answer the following questions:• "How do we know that what we do is

right?"• "How do we make decisions about

procedures in our every dayexperience?"

• "How do we teach students to usecritical thinking and scientific researchto prepare for future jobs?"

• "How has the ABRET exam changedto reflect the health care trend towardevidence based practice?

• "How can we effectively researchinformation we need to stay current?"

Electrocorticography and Mapping inthe ORIt is fascinating to see localization of brain functionduring surgical resection of brain tumors and epilepsysurgery. Case studies will be included.

EEG Frequencies and the Special Role ofDigital EEGSince the widespread use of digital EEG, we are nowcapable of recording ultra-fast EEG frequencies that wedid not know about years ago. Dr. Niedermeyer is areknowned pioneer in EEG and he will shed some lighton these new findings.

24/7: How to Edit and ManageLTM DataThere is a tremendous volume of information recordedevery twenty-four hours for each patient on an LTM unit. How do you effectively sort through all of this data? What are your options for editing and storing data? What are the legal and ethical implications? Find out inthis informative discussion.

9 – 9:55 AM

Deep Brain Stimulation in Tourette’sSyndromeThis is a new technique for the treatment of Tourette’sSyndrome, and this lecture includes before and aftervideos of Tourette’s patients that are very impressive, and will include details of the electrode implant process.

Asleep at the Wheel: A Wake Up Call forSleepy WorkersExcessive daytime sleepiness is now recognized as asafety issue. New rules mandate that pilots and truckersbe screened yearly for this sleep disorder. In 2008JCAHO will require hospitals to ensure that health careworkers are not putting patients at risk by working whenexcessively sleepy. How will this affect lab managersand staffing and how will sleep labs cope with thevolume of new testing this will create?

Autonomic Nervous System Disordersand Paroxsysmal Events seen inPediatric LTMLoss of consciousness in children may be due toepilepsy, syncope or breath–holding. It is of vitalimportance to recognize signs and symptoms to bettertreat pediatric patients. LTM is often the key to thecorrect diagnosis.
