Myanmar is blessed with land andwater resources. Merchantile marine is verycommon these days in Myanmar’s waters.Nine main ports in Myanmar are handlingfreight.
Yangon Port is one of the mainseaports in Myanmar in the maritime tradesection. As there are large volumes offreight-handling at Yangon Port daily, theplan is being implemented to extend theport systematically.
Service capability of the ports is tobe improved with extension of the port yard, secure and smooth waterway into and out ofthe port for vessels and better port services. In extending the port services, emphasis isto be placed on prompt clearance ofcommodities from the port and systematicstorage of cargos. Moreover, priority is tobe given to durability of the ports andcleanliness of the port yard.
At present, Yangon Port handlesvessels whose total weight ranges from15,000 to 20,000 tons, according to the tide.As maritime trade is increasing across theworld, necessary measures are to be takentill the port can handle 35,000-ton vessels.Only then, will the port catch up with thecommodity flow in the future.
Arrangements are being made toextend jetties of Yangon and Thilawa ports. On completion the project, there will be 62jetties. As a result, the ports will have thecapabilities to handle many vesselssimultaneously and to tackle the freight-handling of export and import commoditiesyearly.

Food groups say E15 wil lincrease both corn demand, and inturn, meat prices because livestockeat the grain. About a third of the UScorn crop is used to make ethanol.

BRUSSESL, 10 Nov—The EuropeanUnion proposed to limit the amount ofphosphates used in household laundrydetergents to 0.5 percent by weight in2013, a virtual ban to improve waterquality and protect aquatic life.
Phosphates are primarily used toimprove the effectiveness of detergentsin hard water areas, but if excessiveamounts are discharged into surfacewaters they can raise nutrient levelsand cause algae to grow at the expenseof other aquatic life. “This is a de factoban,” said European Commissionspokeswoman Charlotte Arwidi. “Inpractice this means that no phosphates

Greeneralternatives, which sometimes containvery low levels of phosphorous, wouldstill be allowed. While cost efficientalternatives to phosphates are availablefor laundry detergents, no suchalternatives exist for dishwasher andprofessional detergents, the Commissionsaid, adding that the new limit will notapply to these products.

WASHINGTON, 10 Nov—Respiratory infectionssuch as influenza and other causes of pneumoniakill 4.25 million people every year, many of themyoung children, according to a report released onTuesday.
These infections account for 6 percent of alldeaths globally, the World Lung Foundation saidin releasing its Acute Respiratory Infections Atlas.
“We know that at least 4 million people diefrom acute respiratory infections, yet the globalhealth community does not even recognize them asa distinct disease group,” said Peter Baldini, chiefexecutive officer of the World Lung Foundation. The foundation hopes to convince governmentsand donors to look at respiratory deaths as a group.“With relatively modest resources, the means areavailable to save millions of lives. We simply needcommitment, sound policy, and strategicinvestment,” Baldini said in a statement.
The report, available at http://ARIAtlas.org,shows people in the world’s poorest countries arefar more likely to die from such infections. Thedeath rate from pneumonia is 215 times higher inlow-income countries than in high-incomecountries, for example. A virus called respiratorysyncytial virus, or RSV, is the most common sourceof severe respiratory illness in children, the surveyfound, killing at least 66,000 children a year andpossibly as many as 199,000. It found 3 millionRSV hospitalizations every year and 33 millioncases of RSV in 2005. — MNA/Reuters

Nokia takes backcontrol of
Symbian softwareHELSINKI, 10 Nov—Nokia Oyj will assume full
control of the Symbian operating system, retakingmanagement of a key asset which it had given tothe open source community to run only a few yearsago.
Nokia said on Monday it would take care ofSymbian platform development from April 2011onwards, while the cross-industry SymbianFoundation will in the future take care of onlylicensing of the software.
Nokia bought out other shareholders inSymbian in 2008 and opened the software for anymanufacturers to use for free on an open-sourcebasis. But it failed to win wide adoption and thisyear Samsung Electronics and Sony Ericssonabandoned it in favor of Google’s Android.
“As other licensees have abandoned Symbian,Nokia had little option but to take full control,”said Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight.
The Finnish handset maker has remained thekey contributor to the development of the softwareand has created some 95 percent of sales volumesof Symbian phones.—Reuters
