Meeting with President Jokowi, Japan Promises to Speed Up Six Major Infrastructure Projects

When holding a limited meeting with several minis-ters of the Working Cabinet at the Merdeka Palace in Ja-karta, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) urged his ministers to focus their works on grow-ing the economy in the coun-try.

Primarily the works that related to solving any prob-lem in investment and ex-port matters, said President Jokowi.

“Everything must be in one line, one direction so that the problems faced in the field can be handled proper-ly,” said the president at the Presidential Palace on Friday (1/5).

The president also remind-ed his staff to utilize and safeguard the international trust on the Indonesian ma-nagement in economy which is considered improving by upgrading the rating.

Japan said it will speed up the completion of six major in-frastructure projects in Indo-nesia as agreed by Pre sident Joko Widodo and Ja panese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The Japanese intention was revealed when President Joko Widodo received a dele-gation led by Japanese Prime Minister’s special envoy Toshihiro Nikai who attend-ed the 60th anniversary of di plomatic relations between the two countries at the Pre-sidential Palace, Jakarta, on Friday (1/19).

President Jokowi said at a meeting with Shinzo Abe in Manila, Philippines, in No-vember 2017, the two coun-tries agreed on several issues.

“We agreed to accelerate the completion of some in-frastructure projects. At that time, I said let us finish soon the cooperation projects we have agreed on,” said Jokowi.

Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, who attended meeting in the Jakarta, said there are six infrastructure projects in Indonesia carried out in cooperation with Ja-pan.

The first project, according to Basuki, is the construction of Patimban Port. This pro-ject is scheduled for ground-breaking in May 2018 so that in March 2019 there will be a soft opening. Budi said his

Jokowi Gathers Kings All Over Indonesia To Get Inputs

President Joko Widodo has gathered the kings and sul-tans all over Indonesia at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, to get some inputs from them.

“I’m not going to say any-thing, today I just want to lis-ten, the problems if any faced nowadays by your excellency sultans, kings and queens,” said Jokowi at the Garu-da Room, Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, on Thurs-day (1/4).

The meeting was attended by 88 kings and sultans from all over Indonesia. As many as 20 are from Sumatra, 17 from Java, 3 from Bali, 5 from NTT, 4 from NTB, 10 from Kalimantan, 18 from Sulawesi, 9 from Maluku and 2 from Papua.

HIGHLIGHTS

The kings and sultans were wearing distinctive royal cos-tumes of their respective king-doms, while Jokowi was wearing a long-sleeved batik shirt.

Having been asked to provide inputs, the kings and the sul-tans were one by one told Pres-ident Jokowi what they thought about some issues.

“We offer high appreciation, thank you very much Mr. Presi-dent, we are honored. From Sep-tember 2017 to January 2018 we have met you 4 times in Cirebon, Medan, and here twice. For us, you really love the people, love us all. We can feel it as we can meet you face to face and share our thinking,” said Kepaksian Skala Brak, Lampung, who is also the Chairman of Royal Palace Coun-cil, Edward Syah Pernong, the Sultan of Skala Brak. (TPP)

The ranking on ease of doing business jumped to the 72nd po-sition in 2017, the investment rating has also been upgrad-ed by the international rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S & P), while the grade of Indonesia’s long-term debt rating in foreign and local currency rose to BBB with outlook stable according to Fitch Ratings.

“All of that is a giant leap,” said the president.

Therefore, the president called on all his staff to jointly seek so-lutions for a number of problems still existing which are consi-dered hampering the investment and trade climate in the country.

“Just like a human body, our conditions are good; the choles-terol is good, the heart is good, the lungs are good, the blood pressure is good, but we can-not run fast. There must be a problem that we have to find out what,” said the president. (TRB/TPP)

ministry was assigned to build the access road from the natio-nal road to the Patimban Port.

The second project is the Phase 1 of MRT project which has to be completed by the end of 2018 and immediately on trial so that in 2019 can be operated.

The third project, continued Budi, “Is the West and East corri-dor of MRT which is in the prepa-ration stage to select the consul-tant.”

The fourth project is Jakar-ta-Surabaya express train which will be re-evaluated on the ta riff so that it will be cheaper than the projection and preliminary calculation, while the feasibility study is being prepared.

The fifth project is Trans-Su-matra Toll Road Project from Padang to Pekanbaru.

“We have a new route with a tunnel and connecting road. The tunnel will be financed by Japan under the transfer of technology agreement. The con-necting road will be financed by to Hutama Karya as a con-tractor assigned by the govern-ment,” said Budi.

Such a financing concept will not burden the state budget. Ac-cording to the plan, the ground-breaking will be held in the end of 2018.

The sixth project is Marsela Block. “Japan will start it soon. They are also preparing the fish-ery development projects in out-er islands such as Natuna and Morotai,” said Budi. (ANT/TPP)

Vice President JK: Almost All National Economic Indicators Improve

Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) has said that we should be grateful because almost all the indicators of national economy have improved, although the in-flation rate is still considered too high by some parties.

“Our debt is under control, our national politics is good, sta-ble, the commodity prices once were blamed for causing eco-nomy downturn now are good, so we cannot blame on them again,” he said while opening of the trade of Indonesia Stock Ex-change (BEI) at BEI Building, Jakarta on Tuesday (1/2).

“Our economy grew 5 percent due to the falling prices of coal, rubber and palm oil previously. Now Alhamdulillah (thank God)

they rise,” he added. In politics, JK continued, eve-

rything was fine although many people still worried some cha-os would happen in the election year of 2019. “Such a thought is in the past. In the last three elec-tion years, it was always peace-ful because the campaign is now different. We use the internet more than rally on the streets, so there is less physical clash.”

The good conditions have stimulated the economy to grow further, amid the uncertainty of the world situations. “The Middle East, especially Iran and Iraq, is now getting edgy. However, it does not affect our economy be-cause we have a big market. Be-sides usually if there is a prob-

lem in the oil-rich countries, the oil price will increase and will be followed by the rise in prices of other commodities such as coal and rubber,” JK said.

He called on the investors and public companies to invest more in the real sector instead of in the capital market. “They should build more factories or distribu-tion networks to grow the retail sector.”

JK added that one way to encourage the investments is by lowering the interest rates and gradually Bank Indonesia has been doing it. “It’s meant to push investments in the real sector, instead of saving the money in time deposits. The lower interest rate has also in-

creased the index of the capital market.”

Previously during the ce-remony of closing trade on year end 2017 in the same place led by the president, Financial Ser-vices Authority (OJK) Chair-man Wimboh Santoso said, “We thank all parties; the list-ed companies, the authority and the market players for their contribution to make the mar-ket bullish.”

Attending the opening trade ceremony were Wimboh San-toso, Bank Indonesia Gover-nor Agus Martowardoyo, Coor-dinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati. (TPP)

Agriculture Minister Boasts Indonesia for Stopping Corn and Red Onion Imports

The Ministry of Agri-culture held a National Working Meeting on Ag-ricultural Development 2018 on Monday (1/15) with a theme of “Lifting the Farmers’ Welfare” at Hotel Bidakara, Jakar-ta, attended by about 1,500 participants.

During the occa-sion, Agriculture Mi-nister Amran Sulai man presented a number of achievements in his 3 years term of office. The first achievement is that Indonesia does not im-port medium rice any-more in 2016-2017.

“I want to show some achievements of the Ag-riculture Ministry up to this day,” he said.

Amran’s moves to prevent Indonesia from importing the medi-um rice is by maximiz-ing unused land like the one in the swamp areas and increasing the planting frequency from 2 times to 3 times a year.

“As example is the Rawa Lebak. The swam area used to be flood-ed and became a play-ground in the rainy sea-son while in the dry season it was on fire. Now it has been trans-formed into 1,000 hec-tares of paddy fields. We have 10 million hec-tares of swam areas like that, potentially to be developed into paddy fields. If we can harvest 3 times, 30 million tons of rice will be produced

PT Ratu Prabu Energi Tbk plans to build the mass transpor-tation mode of Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Greater Jakarta (Jabo-detabek) and prepares an invest-ment of US$30 billion.

Coordinating Minister for Ma-ritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pan-djaitan expressed his apprecia-tion for the company’s business plan. He reminded Ratu Prabu about the three requirements to meet for building LRT.

“Investors must fulfill the three requirements,” Luhut said in his office on Friday (1/12).

First, Ratu Prabu must priori-tize the local contents in the cons-truction of the LRT, since many companies in Indonesia are al-ready capable to produce various products used in the LRT project.

Luhut said the current Jabo-debek and Palembang LRT pro-ject uses the local contents about 50 percent. If some contents have

to be imported, the technology transfer system must adhere to them.

Second, the LRT must be envi-ronmentally friendly. The third is using Indonesian human resour-ces as many as possible. “This must be prioritized, even if they need to be trained first,” Luhut said.

Not only Luhut, previous-ly, SOEs Minister Rini Soemar-no also responded positively to the plan of PT Ratu Prabu Ener-gi Tbk to build the LRT in Jabo-detabek. This shows the trans-portation projects in Indonesia is getting preferred by the private companies.

According to her, some big ci-ties are indeed in desperate need of efficient and cheap mass trans-portation, since the grow of the roads cannot follow the grow of the number of motor vehicles.

With many private companies

participating in the infrastruc-ture projects, Rini added, it will assist the government in building this nation.

“Mass transportation mode is a must for Jakarta and its sur-roundings. If private companies want to build one, they are wel-comed,” said Rini in Indramayu.

The construction of the current Jabodetabek and Palembang LRT project was assigned by the go-vernment to the state-owned en-terprise (SOE) to work on to sup-port the Asian Games 2018. The section in Palembang is targeted to finish in 2018, while the one in Jabodebek will be fully completed in 2019.

Rini said she will leave the door wide open if Ratu Prabu want-ed to cooperate with the SOEs in building its LRT. “If we can work together, private and state-owned companies, why not,” she added. (LPT/TPP)

per year. This is what we should pursue,” Am-ran said.

The other achieve-ment, according to Am-ran, is that Indonesia has been exporting the red onion to 6 countries. “We (formerly) imported 12,000 tons of red oni-on, today we export it to 6 countries. We become exporter from previous-ly importer country.”

On the corn produc-tion, Indonesia has also been experiencing sur-plus lately, so it does not need to import the com-modity anymore, said the minister.

“We used to spend Rp12 trillion for im-porting the corn. Oth-er countries asked how could you stop import-ing in such a short time? I answered, just three ways, work, work, work,” he said.

The national meeting was also attended by Heads of Regional Work Unit (SKPD) of the mi-nistry, Director Gene-ral of Domestic Trade of the Trade Ministry, Di-rector Ge neral of Water Resources of the PUPR Ministry, Director Ge-neral of Development and Community Em-powerment of the Vil-lage Ministry, Director General of Taking Care the Poor of the Social Af-fairs Ministry, KPK offi-cials, top brasses of the Police, Army Command-er Assistant and other officers. Sandiaga Wants Pulogadung to Become Digital-Based Economy Area

West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan held a courtesy call with Shizouka Prefecture Vice Go-vernor Takashi Namba at Pakuan State Building, Bandung, on Monday (1/15).

“We discussed some issues, especially the coope-ration between Shizuoka Airport Mt. Fuji and West Java International Airport (BIJB) Kertajati,” said Aher, the nickname of Ahmad Heryawan.

The visit of Vice Governor Shizuoka to West Java returned the visit of Governor of West Java to Shi-zuoka in November 2017 for signing a joint agree-ment between West Java Province and Shizouka Prefecture in economy and human resource deve-lopment.

The cooperation, according to Aher, is related to the opening of Kertajati-Shizuoka direct flight and cargo shipments. One of the activities realized un-der the cooperation was the participation of Shizuo-ka Prefectural Government at the West Java Eco Marathon in Pangalengan, Bandung Regency in Oc-tober 2017. Other activities were sending internship participants from West Java to the Shizuoka Pre-fectural Government Office and participating in the Food Expo held in Shizuoka Prefecture.

“Next, we will initiate the cooperation between the Faculty of Nursing UNPAD and the Faculty of Nursing University of Shizuoka,” he said, adding both parties also explored the potentials in tourism, trade, and investment.

Aher said Takashi told him Shizuoka has na-ture tourist destinations like the ones in West Java. During his visit, Takashi paid a great attention to the Gedong Gincu mango. According to him, being in the Pacific Ocean with warm climate, Shizuoka City’s residents are very fond of the mango originat-

ed from Indramayu-Majalengka.Regarding human resource development in West

Java, the governor said he sought the opportunity of knowledge transfer by preparing high quality hu-man resources in West Java for hire by the compa-nies in Shizuoka.

In the meeting, Governor Aher also served the Waringin Pangalengan coffee to Takashi. This West Java origin coffee has been marketed worldwide. “The coffee is very rich in taste,” Takashi said with amazement.

According to Aher, the coffee is very special with a strong aroma. “When touching the tongue, it will feel a little fruity with medium acidity that spreads to all the mouths. In fact, at the end, there is a sweet sensation,” he said.

The serving of the best coffee of West Java aimed to honor the guests, he added. “West Java and Shi-zuoka Prefecture of Japan have committed to co-operate in various fields. The Sister Provinces MoU was signed in Hamamatsu in November 2017. So, all the hospitality is to venerate the guests and warm up the relationship between West Java and Shizuoka.” (TMP/TPP)

OPINIONwww.presidentpost.com A7February, 2018 | Vol. 8 No. 02 |

The lack of appreciation that many people have over how their country came about before their life times is com-mon in most countries but particularly so in Indonesia. This is why the early chap-ters of S.D. Darmono’s book, Building a Ship While Sail-ing, when he talks about the Founding Fathers, is impor-tant to today’s younger gene-ration. I was sharply remind-ed of this again when I picked up a book about The Founda-tions of Scotland – from the earliest times to 1286, which was written 80 years by Dr Agnes Mure Mackenie.

In the preface she writes “History is more than a study of things past. It is a study of the roots of the present, of the seeds of the future. No man can guide present or future who forgets it, and one major cause of Scotland’s unhappy present (1930s) is that, though her sense of the past is still keen and vivid, she recalls it confusedly and in part. If she is to shape her future worthi-ly, that past must be recalled and understood, not as a se-ries of highly cultured stories but as a consecutive process of event.” This remains valid today and tomorrow, and can be applied to many emerging new nations.

In the case of Indonesia, there is a huge rich cultur-al history across the archi-pelago, much of it still need-ing enlightened scholarship. How ever, it is safe to say that History as a subject will bare-ly feature in today’s national school curriculum. Neverthe-less, a proper understand-ing of a nation’s history pro-vides the necessary glue for its foundation and how it per-ceives itself as it interacts with other nations and how it can help maintain peace among the commonwealth of nations, many still in a fractious state. Nearly every, if not every, na-tion that is deemed to be ma-ture and developed did not

achieve that condition without a lot of strife and soul search-ing over hundreds of years,

With modern systems of communication accelerating at a frightening speed for older generations, it is very easy for younger people to spend time thinking about their immedi-ate needs and forget the social graces from interacting with fellow human beings. Tak-ing ‘selfies’ is not a deep, seri-ous form of social interaction! (Subject for a debate? Where does analog fit in the future digital world?)

But the future is going to be even more challenging than the past, and how are we go-ing to appreciate our history if our education is lacking, and falls short of what we need to play our part in making the story of the future.

It is generally understood that infant brain development needs to be nurtured, with most responsibility falling on the parents, but the diffi-culty then lies in the abi lity of parents to recognise this and provide the necessary en-couragement, if they ae not adequately educated them-selves. It is said that the foun-dation of each of our beings is set in the first 5-7 years of our lives – the Jesuit man-tra was “give me the boy until he is 7, and I will give you the man”; by then, we should have learned 50% of our life skills and what we need for the rest. The very young brain, perhaps unwittingly, is like a sponge as it grows, absorbing what it sees and senses. Just watch today’s child with a smart phone or tablet!

However, there is a long tail across the Indonesian po-pulation. There are too many adults and children, who are deprived and do not have the opportunity to be able to de-velop their personalities to their full potential. Just sur-viving is enough and under-standing history for natio nal development – well that has

to be someone else’s problem! And where is education?

While infrastructure looms high, and correctly so, on the list of imperatives for govern-ment attention, the pauci-ty in the quality of education in too many locations is argu-ably even more important. The World Bank and several large monitoring institutions have assessed Indonesian educa-tion, especially at elementary and junior high levels, as one of the poorest in the world. Evidence of this can be seen across the archipelago, par-ticularly when moving away from administrative centres. The budget applied directly to the Education Ministry, IDR 419 trilllion in 2016, and some double that of 6 years earli-er, was not inconsiderable, but there is little sign of ex-penditure converting into an overall improvement in quali-ty. Some would even say that, while the number of children requiring good edcuation is increasing, the quality is de-clining and this raises anoth-er challenge in terms of the Indonesian workforce compet-ing with ASEAN counterparts in the years ahead.

There are still thousands of locations where little or no teaching is provided, and then of variable quality. The mat-ter is often exacerbated by the lack of access to electricity a problem which could be solved quickly in thousand of loca-tions by the installation of so-lar panels with small battery storage capability in school buildings. This would allow connection for more than half a day and the ability to allow computer hook up. Further, because there is also a dire shortage of qualified teach-ers, prepared lessons cover-ing the national curriculum and more, because the curri-culum is far from challenging for young eager minds, can be brought onto large monitoring screens and thus the quality of content assured. The class

minder/ teacher can also learn.

We know this can be done from more than 19 years ex-perience on the East Bali Po-verty project where, for a mostly illiterate community of 17,000 people across 19 villag-es, the project yayasan had 6 schools built by the commu-nities themselves, with each powered through solar. In the beginning, most children were not at school and did not have proper access to one. Over the past ten years the project has taught an average of 300 chil-dren a year, and produced its first university graduates. E-very effort is made to expand the teaching beyond the na-tional curriculum and en-courage the natural talents of young minds They are also taught about their immediate natural environment and how to use it and appreciate it and, in this way they have learned to use the land to wi den the cultivation of crops and im-prove diets, teacning their parents in the process.

The solutions offered to quickly widen the access to school education of the huge mass of children currently deprived are not ‘rocket’ sci-ence and not expensive to car-ry out. What a difference this could make to the future of the country! Just a change in mindset and determination to win. Then the future leaders of the country can really ap-preciate the foundation of the nation that their forefathers fought for.

There are probably over 4 million thildren with IQs of 130 and above – gifted to ge-nius – and only a small frac-tion of those is having access to proper schooling.

“Local people know bet-ter the area, so as tour guides they can make the tour more interesting while helping the economy of lo-cal community. In Triponyu, everyone can become local guides and their reputation will be determined by their creativity in creating unique tour package,” he added.

Triponyu, Adit further said, is open for investment and cooperation with oth-er parties and targets to grow significantly year to year. “We need investment to build infrastructure and carry out our next plan. Ca-pex will be mostly focused on the infrastructure deve-lopment. We will also seek cooperation with third par-ties to improve our services.”

He also said that the com-pany targets to increase the number of tourist visits through Triponyu by 5% in the first year and will grow further by 17% in the fifth year. “In the meantime, our target for gross profit is be-tween 27% to 30% per year.” (DAILY/TPP)

The management com-pany of Special Econom-ic Zone Tanjung Lesung, PT Kawasan Industri Jababeka Tbk (KIJA), will increase the number of hotel rooms there to 10,000 in the next three years.

The Indonesian tour-ism industry has welcomed a new digital startup from Solo that offers local solu-tions for travelers, named Triponyu. Founded by Agustinus Adhitya Pramo-no (CEO), Onny Suman-tri (COO), Samuel Joshep (CTO), and Alfonsus Aditya Prabowo (CFO & CBDO), the company was launched in July 2016.

According to Alfonsus Aditya Prabowo (Adit), Tri-ponyu is basically a busi-ness platform that gives travelers and local guides access to connect to each other. The local guides can offer their tour packages through Triponyu. Adit said it would create unique and customized tour for every traveler.

“In Triponyu, the lo-cal guides can be travelers and travelers can be local guides. These local guides are hosts located in a tourist destination able to provide attractive tour packages. They will arrange tour pack-ages with their own prices. To become a host, there will be a process of data verifi-cation and tour package checking to provide certain-ty, security, and comfort for the travelers,” Adit said.

Triponyu’s vision of con-necting people and happi-ness is expected to provide an opportunity for everyone to have friendships and ex-perience an unforgettable tour.

Meanwhile its mission is to utilize the potentials of

ist destinations in Indonesia. Banten is famous for its natu-ral beauty, cultural richness, as well as the beauty of the beach and its culinary,” said Vice President of ID42NER Duta Aerlangga.

“Besides, Banten is also known for its adventurous

landscapes so we can prove that Fortuner is a powerful and reliable SUV vehicle in its class. So, hopefully more and more people are interested to drive it,” he added.

According to touring Chair-man Jhony Nyamcun, the ac-tivity has become a tradition for ID42NER clubs all over Indo-nesia. Every activity always in-cludes some things that bring positive influence, meaning in realizing various club agenda, ID42NER is always committed to contribute in the form of so-cial awareness to the surround-ing environment and society.

“This event is no different. We are doing a social service with the help of members who finance the occasion of inviting the orphaned children to enjoy the beauty of one of the beach-es in Banten as well as giving away gifts and donation from the members of ID42NER to them,” Jhony said.

Toyota Fortuner Club of In-donesia (ID42NER) was found-ed on May 13, 2007 with 1,500 members across Indonesia consisting of 4 regions and 18 chapters. (DTK/TPP)

Infrastructure Complete, Jababeka Prepares New Lot for Investors

Standard Chartered Bank launched the Global Focus - Economic Outlook 2018 report on Monday (1/22) during the an-nual Global Research Briefing, attended by the government re-presentatives and company lead-ers at the Mandarin Hotel, Ja-karta.

Deputy Governor of Bank In-donesia Perry Warjiyo, Execu-tive Director of Indonesian Po-litical Indicator Burhanudin Muhtadi, Head of ASEAN Eco-nomic Research Standard Char-tered Bank Edward Lee, Stan-dard Chartered Bank’s Head of Thematic Research Madhur Jha, Standard Chartered Bank Indonesia Chief Economist Al-dian Taloputra, Asia FX Strate-gist of Standard Chartered Di-vya Devesh, and Head of Rates and Credit Research of Standard Chartered Bank Kaushik Rudra became speakers in the event.

With the theme of Beware of The Dog, based on the global re-search the report highlights the global, regional and national economic growth as well as geo-political events.

Edward Lee said the glo-bal economic growth this year is expected to rise by 3.9 per-cent year-on-year compared to

2017, while infrastructure de-velopment and government-run structural economic policies will continue to support the growth in ASEAN.

Regarding the Indonesian economy, the bank predicts it will continue to grow driven by the government infrastructure projects, recovery in private in-vestments due to improved in-vestment climate and exports.

“The policies in safeguarding the inflation and boosting the purchasing power through in-creased social spending, subsi-dies, and village funds will curb the weakening consumption of the private sector,” Aldian said, adding the investment in the pri-vate sector is expected to play a more active role this year, gi-ven the infrastructure spending would only increase by 6 percent in 2018.

Global Research Briefing is a platform where stakeholders - governments, industry leaders and business people can inter-act and gain the latest insights that can be an important consid-eration in taking strategic steps in business and collaboration.

The key points about Indone-sia’s economy in Global Research Report - Beware of the Dog:

Standard Chartered Bank: Indonesia Achieves Momentum Amidst Moderate Economic Growth

As a pioneer of private indus-trial estates in Indonesia, Jaba-beka (KIJA) is supported with complete infrastructures. There are currently more than 1,650 multinational companies from 30 countries as the tenants of Jababeka Industrial Estate in Cikarang, Bekasi, with 730,000 workers and 10,000 expatri-ates.

“For the investors, the Jaba-beka Industrial Estate is now offering a new phase of stage 8 where 20 ha of land plots are ready to use at the beginning of this year,” said Rudy Subra-ta, General Manager of Indus-trial Sales & Marketing Dept of

PT Grahabuana in Jakarta on Thursday (1/25), as reported by Industry.co.id.

According to Rudy, the stage 8 will cover 100 ha with the size of land plots starting from 8,000 m2. In addition to the land plots, KIJA also offers multi-purpose industrial buildings.

The newest product launched in 2018 is Jababeka BizPark 2 to continue the success of the Ja-babeka Bizpark 1 that has been sold out in 2017. “This is a mul-tipurpose and modern building sized at 162 square meters with the prices starting from Rp1.8 billion,” he said.

Rudy added larger industrial

1. GDP growth is expected to increase 5.2% y/y in 2018 from 5.1% y/y in 2017 due to stronger investment and ex-ports and stable private con-sumption.

2. The government tends to refine policies to support household purchasing po-wer, while keeping infra-structure spending a top pri-ority. The fiscal deficit target of 2.2% of GDP will face risks due to the potential shortage of revenues.

3. Inflation is expected to be slightly higher at 4% y/y in 2018 due to normalizing food inflation and higher fuel prices.

4. A manageable inflation, C/A deficit, and a weak USD en-vironment leave room for BI to keep interest rates un-changed this year.

5. Rupiah is reviewed as Neu-tral; sustained inflows may compensate for the widening current account deficit.

6. Political factors tend to be a more prominent consider-ation in policy-making du-ring the electoral years. But historically, there is lack of political risks to economic performance. (TPP)

Kota Jababeka has been developed since 1989 on 5,600 hectares of land area, making it the largest township in Southeast Asia. Jababeka builds and operates its own power plant, dry port, water treatment plant, wastewater treatment facility, roads, high

speed connectivity for communication, and also provides gas supply.

buildings are also offered, like the Premium Standard Factory Building (SFB) with the size of 1,035 m2 on 1,426 m2 of land plot and the prices starting from Rp13 billion. The SFB is suitable for manufacturing, electronics and automotive industries.

There is also a building with 3 in 1 concept called the Three in One Building (TOB) which can function as office, ware-house, and workshop at once. The size of building is 453 m2 on a land plot starting from 540 m2. The TOB is offered at Rp4.5 billion.

“For home industry, the Sup-porting Industrial Building

(SIB) will be suitable with the size of building at 155 m2 and the land plot at 411 m2, while the prices starting from Rp3 bil-lion,” said Rudy.

The complete facilities in Kota Jababeka make it ideal for in-vestors to run their businesses. After 27 years, there are more than 1,650 multinational com-panies operating there. The big companies such as Mattel, Uni-lever, Samsung, LOreal, Kao, AkzoNobel, Kawan Lama, and many others have contributed to convince the investors to invest in Indonesia.

“The development in the Ja-babeka Industrial Estate shows

a very good progress. This can be seen on the complete com-mercial facilities and a wide va-riety of property products for both residential and investment in KIJA. This is certainly ac-cording to the long-term plan of the company to make Kota Ja-babeka Cikarang as an inte-grated environmentally friend-ly township,” said Director of PT Jababeka Tbk, Sutedja S. Dar-mono.

Therefore, he added, the Ja-babeka Industrial Estate which has turned into a self-sufficient township will continue to be de-veloped to keep it growing to at-tract more investors. (TPP)

in the first stage of marketing sales in the end of 2017 with a record of property selling price at Rp28 million/m2 in East Jakar-ta, PT Grahabuana Cikarang as the developer of Jababeka Resi-dence has re-launched the top-class apartment of Kawana Golf Re sidence phase two.

“Seeing the extraordinary res-ponse from the buyers, we re-open the opportunity for poten-tial investors to buy Kawana Golf Residence phase two,” said Pre-sident Director of PT Graha Bua-na Cikarang, Sutedja S. Darmo-no, in a Media Gathering & Press Conference on Jababeka Re-sidence Outlook 2018 & Grand Product Knowledge of Kawana Golf Residence Phase Two in Ja-karta on Tuesday (1/16).

Sutedja said, in the first phase

in December 2017, 130 units of the premium product were sold out; from the initial target of 6 floors, it turned out 10 floors were sold.

“This is very extraordinary, we create a new breakthrough, a new property market in Indone-sia. Amid the slow market con-dition, it was sold well. Hopeful-ly the phase two will be sold out too,” he said.

The high interest of buyers, according to him, cannot be se-parated from the consumer con-fidence in Jababeka Residence property products. Besides any project always completed on time, the capital gain offered with the yield of 12% per year is also a factor for the success of the sales of Kawana Golf Resi-dence Apartment.

Additionally, the extensive

development of infrastruc-ture in the East Jakarta area such as the elevated toll road to be completed in 2019, MRT in 2019, and LRT from Jakar-ta to Cikarang will boost the investment value of Jababeka Residence property products.

To meet the target of the second phase sales while pro-viding convenience for poten-tial investors, Jababeka Re-sidence has cooperated with leading property marketing agents in Indonesia such as ERA, Century21, Ray White, LJ Hooker, Harcourts and PROMEX to marketing the Kawana Golf Residence.

“We are targeting the 104 units will be Sold Out in Feb-ruary 2018 with estimated sales value of Rp150 billion,” Sutedja said. (IND/TPP)

“The plan is AKR will ope-rate 350 SPBUs in coopera-tion with British company Bibby Offshore in the next 10 years,” Haryanto said at the Ministry of Energy and Mi-neral Resources, Jakarta, on Monday (1/8).

Haryanto said in the first stage of the project, 17 gas stations will be built in 2018.

“This year we will operate 17 gas stations first,” he said.

Regarding the location, Haryanto added, the 17 new gas stations will be built in Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung.

As for the oil fuels (BBM) to be sold, according to Haryan-to, will be the RON 92 which is equivalent to pertamax, and biosolar.

“Only biosolar and RON 92 in Jakarta, Surabaya, Ban-dung. Both are non-subsi-dized fuels,” he said.

The government has ap-pointed AKR Corporindo and Pertamina as the distribu-tors for the subsidized fuels of premium and solar (diesel fuel). The government gave 5 years contract of distribution to provide certainty in invest-ment for the investors who have to build gas stations in the remote areas. (DTK/TPP)

PLTB Sidrap I Ready to Operate

After 50 Years Managed by Foreign Company, Mahakam Block Finally Taken Over by Pertamina

After a long time controlled by Total, the Mahakam Block has finally been taken over by Pertamina. According to Secretary General of Cen-tral Executive Board (DPP) PDI P Hasto Kristiyanto, the move will strengthen the so-vereignty of domestic energy.

Hasto said his party be-lieved Jokowi’s government will not need to make a de-cision to raise the fuel prices due to the thorough revamp-ing of the energy sector.

“The steps to make the ener -gy sector more efficient and competitive, especially on oil and gas, have shown an encouraging result. To avoid unnecessary political pressure, the fuel prices do not need to be increased, es-pecially with the Pertamina’s

growing potential profits,” Hasto said recently.

The belief was based on the success of President Jokowi’s government in strengthening the national energy sovereign-ty. The national energy policy is now increasingly prioritizing the national interests, through more just business agreements in the oil and gas sector.

The various policy revisions made by Energy and Mineral Re-sources Minister Ignasius Jonan have also increased the invest-ment attractiveness in that sec-tor which affects the livelihood of the people greatly.

“The operation of the oil-rich Mahakam Block by Pertamina since January 1, 2018 not only reinforces the national capabili-ty in managing the upstream oil and gas sector, but also shows a

The Wind Power Plant (PLTB) of Sidrap I will be operation-al soon after an interconnec-tion trial with PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) net-work showed a good result. A total of 20 out of planned 30 wind turbines and a substation have been ready to be connect-ed with the PLN network.

Each turbine has a capaci-ty of 2.5 Megawatt (MW) or 50 MW in total for the 20 ready turbines. This wind farm is ex-pected to support the national supply of electricity.

Energy and Mineral Re-sources (ESDM) Minister Ig-natius Jonan said he support-ed the operation of the Sidrap wind power plant. Jonan said

the electricity tariff from PLTB Sidrap is affordable. The ta riff of the first stage is 11 cents US dollar per kWh flat. Then for the second stage, he will nego-tiate again.

“The tariff of PLTB stage one is 11 cents US dollar per kWh flat; how about the second stage? We will negotiate again, I will ask the price to be lower,” said Jonan in Jakarta on the official website of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resourc-es on Monday (12/8).

Sidrap I is the first commer-cial wind power plant (PLTB) in Indonesia. Once the project with an investment of US$150 million or approximately Rp2 trillion starts operating by PT

significant progress towards na-tional energy sovereignty,” Has-to added.

He appreciated the govern-ment through all levels of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKK Migas) and Pertamina for the breakthrough and their hard works.

By controlling the oil block, Pertamina’s assets increase to Rp122 Trillion, Pertamina’s re-venue certainly will increase as well as its profit. The increase in Pertamina’s assets and profit will support the SOE financial-ly in running the country’s po-litical economy. PDI Perjuangan, Hasto said, is proud that now the Mahakam Block is managed by Indonesian people. (AKR/TPP)

LOGISTICSwww.presidentpost.com B3February, 2018 | Vol. 8 No. 02 |

Pelni Logistics, a subsidiary of PT Pelni (Persero), targets to earn profit at Rp49 billion in 2018 or an increase from Rp45 billion in 2017, considering the national lo-gistics is predicted to grow well in the upcoming years.

“Yes, that is our target,” said Pelni Logistics President Director Suharyanto in Jakarta on Sun-day (1/7).

That target, according to him, will be achieved by increasing the dry bulk loading and unloading as well as cooperating with other state-owned enterprises.

“The dry bulk loading and unloading will grow positively, thanking to the “maritime high-way” (short-sea shipping) pro-gram launched in November 2015 which has improved the distribution in the eastern Indo-nesia,” Suharyanto said.

He added the company’s busi-ness development is still wide open with the occupancy rate of Pelni’s cargo ships is still about 70 percent today.

Suharyanto also said he will increase the loading and unload-ing activities from non-captive sector of coal and other general cargoes as much as 5.3 million tons this year.

Pelni Logistics Targets Profit of Rp49 Billion in 2018

“That’s a significant rise from only 1.8 million tons in 2016,” he said.

Pelni Logistics, established on March 31, 1986 under the name of PT Sarana Bandar Nasional, started to provide shipment ser-vices using the ships owned by its holding company and others.

The services include the load-ing and unloading of goods from and to the ships (stevedoring), removing and transporting the goods from the pier to the ware-house and vice versa (cargo-doring), as well as receiving and delivering the goods from the warehouse to the addressed re-cipient (receiving delivery).

The cargoes shipped by the company include containers, gen-eral cargo, bulk fertilizer, cement, vehicles and heavy equipment.

The company also serves load-ing/unloading bagged cargo such as rice, fertilizer and flour, as well as palletized cargo like plywood and ceramics.

Loading and unloading of dry bulk such as coal and nickel, as well as liquid bulk such as palm oil (CPO) are also served by the company. It even serves door-to-door transportation services to support the main business.

In fact, since 2013 the compa-ny has established two subsidiar-ies running multimodal and port transportation business, and cur-rently is developing its distribu-tion channels under the brand of Pelni Mart.

Pelni Logistics also plans to in-crease the number of containers to 1,200 from 980 right now.

The company has intensified its cooperation with Haka Aston, Pos Logistics, Pupuk Indonesia, and Semen Indonesia.

“Since August 2017 we coope-rate with Semen Indonesia by shipping its cement from Makas-sar Port to Pomako Port in Timi-ka,” Suharyanto said, adding that together with PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia, Pelni Lo-gistics shipped tens of tones of staple goods to Wamena Regency in Papua to be sold at 25 percent below the market price as target-ed by the government.

Pelni Logistics booked Rp270 billion revenue in 2017. It has provided online services to facili-tate the customers.

“The application is also expect-ed to increase the contribution of subsidiaries to the parent com-pany by 15-20 percent in 2018,” said Suharyanto. (ANT/TPP)

The Ministry of Trans-portation plans to reduce the Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) tariffs for the logis-tics sector early this year.

At first the government will conduct a pilot project in Tanjung Priok Port as it accommodates 50% of the total of national logistics.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the tariff reduction aimed to accelerate the improve-ment in the ease of doing business (EoDB) in Indo-nesia to be more compe-titive. The Transportation Ministry has been focus-ing on the three matters to support it, namely the use of online applications, the reduction of tariffs and time.

“We must reduce the

PNBP Tariffs for Logistics Down Early this Year

tariffs, but it should be done cautiously. We have agreed to lower the tariffs, both corpo-rate and non-tax revenues, so that the figure will be more competitive. If there is a dif-ference it’s not that big,” he said at the Coordinating Min-istry for Economic Affairs on Monday (1/15).

Unfortunately, Budi re-fused to say the exact reduc-tion will be, given he has to wait for approval from the Ministry of Finance. Hopeful-ly the tariff reduction will in-crease the volume of transac-tions, he said.

Regarding the EoDB rank, Budi said he did not set an ex-act target. The most important thing to him is to improve the quality of service so that the rank will certainly increase.

To reduce time, according

to Budi, online applications should be used more to make the delivery of goods more ef-fective and easy.

The government has pro-vided the facilities but are not utilized maximally, he said, adding that they will be im-proved to attract more users.

In the meantime, about the three-day dwelling time at the port Budi said 30%-40% of goods still stay longer due to various reasons.

Most of the cases are be-cause the inspection is unfin-ished yet, while some others are because the owners have yet to find any warehouse to store or buyers. To deal with the problems, Budi has asked the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs to synergize the collaboration among the related parties. (BSN/TPP)

has been working as Tech/Di-gital Entrepreneur for 22 years, but her background is architec-ture so that she has a high ap-preciation to the works of arts, especially by the domestic ar-tists.

Unfortunately, amid the ra-pid development of information technology, their phenomenal works have never been promoted through the social media.

Indonesia has many good and powerful painters recognized by the international communi-ty but in their own country they seem to be forgotten and not even come up in people’s conver-sation. According to Shinta, the event can be a momentum to see and appreciate their works.

Shinta has asked the Chair-

In 2030 Indonesia to Become 5th Largest Economy in the World

Communications and In-formatics Minister Rudian-tara has called on the in-dustry players to anticipate the disruptive innovation in industrial development.

“It is not the technology but the power of thinking that utilizes the technology. The technology itself is only an enabler, what changes is the way of thinking. So, tell people and talents to always find new ways that can make their business resi lience against the com-petition,” the minister said in the Event of CEO Gath-ering 2018: 15 Years of PFI Building Competitiveness-Anticipating Disruptive In-novation in Industrial De-velopment at Balai Kartini Jakarta on Thursday (1/11).

According to Rudiantara, there are several technolo-gies that can be used as an enabler such as advanced robotics, artificial intelli-gence, Internet of Things,

cloud computing, big data analytics, 3D printing, and digital payment systems.

“The year 2030 will be-come the benchmark, be-cause we will get a de-mographic bonus. Our economy will 2.5 times the current economy and Indo-nesia will be the 5th largest economy in the world. The most important thing is how to change our mindset while looking for new processes. All the companies with mo-nopolistic and oligopolis-tic styles will be disrupted by the way of thinking,” he added.

Minister Rudiantara also said that currently there is a shift in the Indonesian economy. “Our economy shifted to services, while the behaviors of our young peo-ple are changing too. Now the young people rarely buy new clothes, they prefer lei-sure like watching movies and traveling.” (TPP)

ing a company/organization today. With the development of health technology, the hu-man age becomes longer. Therefore, in a company some-times there are 4 - 5 gene-rations with different traits and thoughts. There are old-er generation (born before In-dependence Day), baby boomer generation (1946-1964), gene-ration x (1965-1976), genera-tion y (1977-1997) and genera-tion z (1998-2010). Surely, it’s challenging to manage such a company to run fast, efficient and effective in the current era of competition.

Closing the panel discus-sion, Erik Tapan was asked to share his experiences in run-ning his online store. As we all know, one of the starting points of Jack Ma’s company comes from e-commerce or market-

dra Gunawan, Commissioner of Gramedia Group.

In his speech, Chairman of KOWAS Mr. Indra Gunawan ex-plained about the uniqueness of Jack Ma who has not been widely known yet. He likes to practice meditation/yoga with the position of inversion/sir-sasana. Maybe because Jack Ma gets used to look the world from different angle than most people. That’s why his think-ing is often out of the box.

Dr. Boenjamin Setiawan, in his presentation said in prin-ciple he agreed with what be-came Jack Ma’s inspirational values. He did not agree only in one thing that when getting old, people must stop working and start to have fun. For Dr. Boen, working is a pleasure.

Dr. AB Soesanto highlight-ed the complexities of manag-

place. His advice to the par-ticipants (mostly young people and students) was to act im-mediately. Without action they will go nowhere. Quoting Jack Ma, he said young age should not be easily to give up, when falling just get up.

After the discussion, the participants were welcomed to taste the dishes that can be cooked according to the genes. It’s true, the food ingredients can be adjusted to the gene-tic condition of each person, so that the body will be healthier and not easy to get sick.

During the event, various health checks were given for free, including the examina-tion on body age, skin health, cholesterol and stress level.

A big number of participants were going home with a door prize. (TPP)

Entrepreneur University, What is The Measurement? Many higher education ins-

titutions in Indonesia claims their institutions as Entrepre-neur University. However, if being asked what are the in-dicators towards the claims, the answer is still vague. One of the most popular indicator used is using the total amount of university graduates that becomes an enterpreneur. But, how many?

Referring to some abroad universities, the total amount is quite high. According to Fi-nancial Times (2015), there are 46% MBA alumni from Babson College in the Unit-ed States open their business right after they graduate. The number is increasing three times since 2012 which was only 17%.

The same situation is also occur in other higher educa-tion institutions. For instance, in Ipade Business School in Mexico City, Mexico, 46% of its graduate build start-up busi-ness. It has been increased by 70% compared to 2012 which was only 6%. Or in Stanford’s Graduate School of Business right after graduate, 34% of the alumni (14% in 2012) open their business.

Same thing goes with Har-vard Business School (28% in 2015 increased by 6% from 2012), Oxford (27% – 5%), and some other universities. In conclusion, average num-ber of alumni who set up their own business since 2012 un-til 2015 grow more than three times.

Is this the indicator of an Entrepreneur University? Or is there any other parame-

ter that can be used to mea-sure how far a university de-velop its potency to innovate the entrepreneurship? To an-swer some of the questions, University of Gloucestershire (UoG), England, collaborat-ed with Pre-sident University (PresUniv) to hold a workshop which discuss this matter. The topic is “Growing Indone-sia – A Tri angular Approach (GITA)”.

A Workshop which was held in Celecton Hotel, Ci-karang, West Java, on 7 – 12 December 2017, involved by seven higher education insti-tutions from Indonesia and three from Europe. They are; Universitas Padjajaran, Ban-dung; Universitas Brawijaya and STIE Malangkucecwara

from Malang, East Java; Uni-versitas Negeri Semarang, Semarang, Central Java; Uni-versitas Ahmad Dahlan and Universitas Islam Indonesia from Yogyakarta; Dublin Ins-titute of Technology, (Ireland); Fachhochschule des Mittel-stands (Germany); The Uni-versity of Innsbruck (Austria).

According to Adhi Setyo Santoso, Director of Setsail Biz Accel, a business incu-bator under PresUniv, “GITA can be used to maintain the capacity of students, alumni, lecturera, and civitas acade-mica of the university in de-veloping Entrepreneurial Uni-versity. Ruangguru Founder: Received Scholarship as Student of SMA Presiden in the Past, Now in Cooperation with President University to Select

Students of Rp66 Billion Scholarship Receivers presidentpost.com

President University is pre-paring a scholarship fund of Rp66 billion for 1,440 graduates of general high and vocation-al schools to study at President University.

The university is cooperating with a technology-based edu-cation service provider, Ruang-guru, for online selection of the scholarship receiver students.

The MoU on the coopera-tion was signed at the Presi-dent Lounge, Batavia Tower, Ja-karta, on Wednesday (1/10) by President University Rector Jony Haryanto and CEO of Ruang-guru Adamas Belva, attended by Founder of President Univer-sity S.D. Darmono, Chairman of the Presidential Foundation Prof.

Budi Susilo Soe pandji and his staff.

In this partnership, Ruang-guru as a provider of educa-tional services already used by 6 million students in Indonesia will be the exclusive organizer to conduct online test to select the pros pective receivers of Pre sident University scholarship. The on-line exam will be used by XII graders to compete for over 150 full scholarships and thousands of partial scholarships.

S.D. Darmono in his speech said, “The most important edu-cation is practice education, you can study how to swim for 10 years to get Phd degree, but if you never swim then you can-not swim.”

According to him, the develop-ment of industrial estates is an answer to make school gradu-ates able to work in industry.

“I am very proud Belva studied at SMA (High School) Presiden, the first batch graduate. They (Belva and Isman) are young In-donesian leaders who will change the educational landscape in In-donesia,” S.D. Darmono added.

Responding to S.D. Darmono, Belva said, “My 3 years in SMA Presiden and lived in the dormi-tory had shaped me into like this. I got a full scholarship to stay, eat and uniform for free. After gra-duating from the school, I got a scholarship to study in Singa-pore, then worked at Mckinzey and Presidential Work Unit.

I just got another dual deg-ree scholarship at Harvard and Stanford and I’m the first Indo-nesian to get the dual degree. It all only possible thanks to your services, Mr. S.D. Darmono and others.”

Belva added, “Now we have 400 employees with offices in Jakarta, Jogja, Medan, Sema-rang and others. We are partner-ing with local governments in 32 provinces and 300 cities and re-gencies. We will coordinate with them how the selection for receiv-ers of scholarship worth Rp66 billion from the President Uni-versity can be held in every pro-vince.”

According to him, the online selection opens the opportunity to all students in Indonesia, both in big cities and remote areas to

get into the good and quality university.

The online selection pro-vides major studies that can be selected such as account-ing, business administra-tion, management, informa-tion technology, information systems, industrial engineer-ing, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, de-velopment techniques, inter-national relations, commu-nication, law and education of primary school aged chil-dren.

The registration for the scholarship is open from Ja-nuary 10, 2018 to February 9, 2018 and will be conducted in 4 stages. The selection result will be announced on March 28 – 30, 2018.

Founded in 2014, Ruang-guru currently has more than 6 million users and has been developing a variety of technology-based learning services such as online study rooms with learning videos, practicing exam as well as discussion and module sum-maries, marketplace for pri-vate tutorials, on-demand learning guidance, test room for online exam tryout and digitalbootcamp for learning in group with standby tutor.

Unair Student Wins Competition of Asean + Unet Logo Design

Adi Wisnu Nugroho, a stu-dent of Economics and Business (FEB) Faculty, Airlangga Uni-versity (Unair) Surabaya, must make his campus proud. He has successfully won the competition on designing the logo of ASEAN + 3 University Network (ASEAN + 3 UNet).

According to Wisnu, when he was acknowledged that he won the competition, he could not be-lieve it. The competition was held relatively long time ago and Wis-nu almost forgot that he parti-cipated in the prestigious compe-tition.

“At first, I thought I did not win, especially because the time from the opening of the competi-tion to the announcement is too long, from June 2017 to January 2018. I almost forgot it, then sud-denly I got the acknowledgement that I won,” said Wisnu on Thurs-day (1/11).

The student, majoring in ma-nagement, said he participated in the ASEAN + 3 UNet Logo De-sign Competition was just to fill

the spare time. Wisnu got the info about the competition from Un-air account at the social media of Line.

“With the help of several friends, I finally sent ten logos to the competition,” said Wisnu.

To get ideas for his designs, Wisnu was studying logos that became trendy and widely used by educational institutions. The student of class 2014 then com-bined the flag colors of three ASE-AN + 3 Unet countries, namely China, Japan, and Korea.

“I took the colors of country flags, yellow for China, blue for Korea, and red for Japan,” said Wisnu.

He added that he never parti-cipated in such a competition be-fore. However, he does have de-sign skills he usually uses in the campus activities as an organizer of a member of committee.

“I won the prize of US$800 (eight hundred dollars) in cash and a certificate of recognition from ASEAN + 3 Unet,” he said. (TPP)

D’Khayangan Invites Bonsai

Maestro to Teach Bonsai Design

Techniques

The event was attended by Rosylawati Dewi, the wife of Chairman of Jababeka S.D. Darmono, along with her friends, while the speaker was In-donesian bonsai maestro Budi Sulistyo.

The event began with a presentation about the species of plants can be made as bonsai, such as Ficus virens, Ficus glauca, Pemphis acidula, Casuarina equisetifolia, Triphasia trifolia, Euge-nia uniflora, Bucida spinosa, Plectronia horida, Premna, Celtis, Blue bell (desmodium Sp), Bou-genvillia, Feronia Lucida, Dombeya rotundifolia, Jacquinea aculeata and others.

It was followed by Budi’s explanation about de-sign techniques, including Rain Tree (samanae saman in nature), From Cutting, The Roots, Root Wiring, Root Splitting, The Recovered Root.

After the presentation, the author of “Galeri Bonsai” (Bonsai Gallery) showed the audience how to make a bonsai with the available tools and materials, such as a scissor, a wire coil, chop-sticks, a pot, fertilizers, and of course the tree to be formed a bonsai.

Budi showed some techniques using the wire coil. He shaped up the tree using the wire which according to him was easier to make various beau-

tiful shapes, although it has to be done carefully.“This wire actually makes the tree suffer, but

in this case its suffering produces beauty. Like someone who has a plastic surgery would have been initially in pain but ended up beautiful. It needs sacrifice to be beautiful and good looking. That’s the concept of bonsai with this wire,” he said.

After he finished working on the stem and wire, Budi proceeded with beautifying the leaves by cutting some twigs. Then using the chopsticks, he punched the soil off to be replaced with new ferti-lized soil with more nutrients.

In the pot, Budi mixed 4 materials of gravels, sand, humus and topsoil with the composition of 1:1. Then he put the tree into the pot and stirred the media with chopsticks so there is no empty space in the pot. The bonsai must be watered suf-ficiently every day.

After watching the demo of how to make a bon-sai, the audience were served a lunch, then they went to the Indonesian Arts Exhibition at Jaba-beka Convention Center where various models of bonsai were on display. Photo by Presidentpost.com (Risma/TPP)
