PREFACE

The 4th ASEAN Comparative Education Conference Network (ACER-N) that is holdon November 30th – December 1st 2016 has chosen 300 papers that are presented inInna Muara Hotel Padang, Sumatera Barat Indonesia.

The main purpose of this conference is to provide a forum to cover the participants indiscussing and sharing experiences, information, and findings of their researches ineducation, economic, and culture which are described in the main theme of thisconference: " The Asean teacher towards standardization of qualifications ".

This proceeding is published in Compact Disk Form. There are 300 papers which areattached on this proceeding that consists of 242 papers from Indonesian, 56 papersfrom Malaysian, and 2 papers from Brunei Darussalam. The published papers havebeen edited by considering the mechanical writing, word choice, and template withoutchanging the contents of the articles.

As the cooperation program in the ASEAN Comparative Research Network (ACER-N), it is hoped that this proceeding will initiate all researchers in Indonesia, Malaysia,Brunei Darussalam, and other countries around ASEAN to conduct a collaborativeresearch that focuses on issues in improving the quality of education implementationin order to transfer it into the basic of education for world welfare.

My depth appreciations and thanks go to all committee of the proceeding that consistof academic experts from Indonesia, Malaysia for their commitments andcontributions that are given in publishing of this proceeding success.

THE EFFECT OF PROBLEM CENTERED LEARNING APPROACHTOWARD MATHEMATIC PROBLEM SOLVING AT THE TENTH

YEAR STUDENTS OF SMAN SOLOK REGENCY

Abstract

Mathematic learning achievement of the students SMAN Solok Regency was still low. It was causedteaching learning process focused by centre of teacher. In other, the students were lack ofcomprehension of primary ability as the main material. The research was conducted which aimed toknowing the effect of problem centered learning approach and the primary ability toward learningachievement was mathematic solving problem achievement in mathematic. The analysis showed that (1)mathematic problem solving skills of the students who were taught by using problem centered learninghad high score than the students whose where taught by using conventional model 2) mathematicproblem solving skills of the students whose high primary ability that were taught by using problemcentered learning had same score with the students who were taught by using conventional model 3)mathematic problem solving skills of the students whose low primary ability that were taught by usingproblem centered learning had high score than the students who were taught by using conventionalmodel 4) whose were no interaction among the use of problem centered learning and the grade ofprimary ability in influencing the mathematic problem solving skills.

Abstrak

Hasil belajar matematika yang diperoleh siswa SMAN Kabupaten Solok masih rendah. Hal ini terjadikarena proses pembelajaran masih terpusat pada guru. Selain itu, kemampuan siswa dalam penguasaanmateri juga masih kurang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pendekatan ProblemCentered Learning dan kemampuan awal siswa terhadap kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematikasiswa. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa: 1) kemampuan pemecahan masalah siswa yangpembelajarannya menggunakan pendekatan Problem Centered Learning lebih tinggi dari siswa yangpembelajarannya menggunakan pembelajaran konvensional 2) kemampuan pemecahan masalahmatematika siswa yang memiliki kemampuan awal tinggi yang pembelajarannya menggunakanpendekatan Problem Centered Learning lebih tinggi daripada siswa yang pembelajarannyamenggunakan pembelajaran konvensional 3) kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematika siswa yangmemiliki kemampuan awal rendah yang pembelajarannya menggunakan pendekatan Problem CenteredLearning lebih tinggi dari siswa yang pembelajarannya menggunakan pembelajaran konvensional 4)tidak terdapat interaksi antara penggunaan pendekatan Problem Centered Learning dengan kemampuanawal dalam mempengaruhi kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematika siswa.

1. IntroductionMathematics has an important role in a variety of disciplines that promote the power of

human thought in terms of spurring the development carefully and precisely and in preparingcommunities to anticipate the development of a way of thinking and behaving. Similarly, ineducation, especially school, a teacher must be able to explore the potential that exists instudents in order to solve the problem. In this case the basic ability influence their ability tosolve problems. On the other hand, reality has shown that students' mathematical problemsolving ability are still low. This is due to learning do not support students' mathematicalproblem solving ability. Learning is still dominated by the teachers. Thus, students are nottrained to solve problems. Therefore, we need a study to optimize students' mathematicalproblem solving ability. One lesson that can develop problem-solving ability of students is astudent-centered learning (student centered) is to approach Problem Centered Learning (PCL).

PCL approach is an approach centered learning where there are interactions among studentsand students with teachers. According Jokubowski (Hafriani, 2004), PCL approach is alearning activity that emphasizes learning through research and problem solving. Learning byusing approach PCL allows students to stimulate their mind to create concepts that there be alogical through learning activities on issues of interest to students, always trying to solveproblems, improve communication on learning, focusing on the process of investigation andreasoning in problem solving and develop students' confidence in using mathematics when theyface situations of daily life. This approach can provide an opportunity for students to constructtheir own knowledge, so that they can be able to obtain knowledge, locate, identify, and solveproblems. As noted Wood and seller (Cassel, 2003) that the PCL approach learning occurswhen students construct an understanding of their own experiences, the students act andinteract with their peers,hence, they are actively trying to solve mathematical problemsencountered in useful activities. Learning with PCL approach involves three important stepsthat must be done in learning, doing tasks, group activities and class discussions (sharing).

2. Research MethodThe research is a quasi-experimental (quasi experiment) with Randomized Group Only

Design. The population in this study were students of the 10th class SMAN Kabupaten Solokwith a moderate level. The sampling technique is random sampling, by raffle. Samples wereselected were students of the 10th class SMA Negeri 1 Science 2 Hiliran Gumanti as anexperimental class and the 10th class Science 1 as the control class.

The instruments that used in data collection is beginning ability test and final test. Dataanalysis technique that used are normality test, homogenity, and hypothesis testing.

3. Result And DiscussionMathematical problem solving ability Data of students obtained from the final test results.

The average mathematical problem solving ability of students can be seen in the followingtable.

Based on data analysis that obtained by hypothesis testing, can be explained as follows:

a. The Effect of Problem Centered Learning Approach Against Students MathematicalProblem Solving Ability.Based on the results of hypothesis testing can be seen that the average value of mathematical

problem solving ability of students on the experimental group that uses the Problem CenteredLearning approach higher than the average value of the control group using conventionallearning. The high acquisition value of the experimental group occur their lessons are studentcentered, where students construct their own knowledge possessed. In accordance with thedisclosed Splizer (Redhana, 2003) that the learning process that is student centered studentshould be able to construct their own knowledge.

In addition, in the process of learning the Problem Centered Learning approach provides theopportunity for all students to participate and be actively involved in learning, able to worktogether in groups, exchanging ideas with each other and help each other in solving theproblems given. In addition, student learning is not in demand on the outcome, but learning todo more emphasis on the process. As expressed by Ruseffendi (2006) that solving the problemis a general approach that prioritizes the process of the results (output). By discussion, studentscan brainstorm and exchange ideas. So they used to express their ideas and to solve problemsof mathematics.

In a conventional classroom, teachers introduced the concepts in lectures. Learning happensunidirectional. Students are waiting for an explanation from the teacher, as a result studentsbecome dependent on the teacher. Knowledge that they gained is limited to the transfer whatteachers gave to them and not developed effectively. Most students are less able to explain theconcept with their own language and they tend to open their notes and read those.

b. Effect of Problem Centered Learning Approach Against Mathematical ProblemSolving Ability of Students who have High Basic Capability.The results of hypothesis testing shows that generally, mathematical problem solving ability

of students who have the high basic ability that taught by using the early learning ProblemCentered Learning approach gain the same results with students who taught by using usingconventional learning.

Students who have a high basic ability on learning with Problem Centered Learningapproach can improve their ability because they already comprehend and understand theconcepts of the material that they have learned about. In addition, by this Learning approach,problem solving skill are not taught directly by teachers, but found by students themselves.Students whose the higher basic ability can be easier to apply and solve the problem becausethey already have the concepts.

Students who has higher basic ability in the classes taught by Problem Centered Learningapproach, can be trained to think creatively and innovatively to find ideas in order to solveproblems. Investigation of the problem that is given will help students to define these ideas.Jakubowski said that one of the characteristics of Problem Centered Learning approach isfocuses on the processes of investigation and reasoning in problem solving and instead focus ongetting the results of experiment is right or correct answer to a question only so that these ideascan be used as a consideration for their group. Students Activities in their group make themaccustomed to solve problems.

Likewise with the students who have high basic ability in the conventional learning.Although they are taught conventionally (the material being studied is explained directly by theteacher), motivation or desire to learn is not decreased. They more dominated the learningactivities than students who have lower initial ability. They also more understood the materialthat are taught by teachers. It could be seen during the learning process takes place. When theydid not understand the material identified by teachers, they immediately questioned aboutthings that are not understood.

c. Effect of Problem Centered Learning Approach Against Mathematical ProblemSolving Ability of Students who have Low Beginning Capability.The results of hypothesis testing shows that generally the ability of solving mathematical

problems of students who have low ability that are taught using Problem Centered Learningapproach obtain higher results than students taught using conventional learning. By thisApproach, students who have the lower ability can motivated themselves in learning the subjectfor the because this approach requires all students to be active in learning, especially in theirgroup. It is because students who are capable can help them so that they understand thematerial better. By cooperation, learning that takes place can achieve the expected goal.Alipande (1984: 93) said that the best way of learning is done by teachers by establishing aworking group from a collection of some disciples is to achieve a certain learning objectives associal activity.

In the conventional learning, students who have lower initial ability ignored the materialtaught teachers and more busy with other activities that may disturb the learning process. Liketalking to a friend who was in the side and in front of him, playing Hand phone or walk whenthe teacher explained the material. As a result, when the teacher asked them, they did not knowwhat was asked even when teachers give questions, they do not understand the problem andwere just waiting for an answer from their friend. Finally, It caused learning outcomes gainedless than the maximum.

ConclusionBased on the results of data analysis and discussion, we concluded that (1) the mathematical

problem solving ability of students who are taught PCL approach are higher than students

taught by conventional teaching; (2) the ability of solving mathematical problems of studentswho have high basic ability are taught by PCL approach are same with students taught byconventional teaching; (3) the ability of mathematical problem solving ability of students whohave lower taught by PCL approach are higher than students taught by conventional teaching;and (4) there is no interaction between the learning model and early ability in mathematicalproblem solving ability.
