  • By: Sr. Iluminada C. Coronel, FMM.ASEAN 2015

  • 1. What is it all about?ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations

  • Three Pilars for ASEAN Community

    Political Security

    Economic Community

    Socio Cultural Community

  • Single market and production base where there will be a free flow of goods, capital, services, and skilled labor. The last two will exert increasingly greater pressure on our educational system.ASEAN Economic Community is what we are waiting for in 2015.

  • Our educational quality has to catch up with that of other ASEAN nations.2. How do we educators prepare ourselves

  • It must be Outcomes Based, Learner Centered. K-12 is planned to make our Grade 12 graduates comparable to those of other ASEAN countries. A study of K-12 will show it is outcomes oriented.

  • A qualifications Framework is being made by each country

-standards and levels of outcome that must be satisfied at each level of education of each individual.

  • -items of the Q.F. have equiva- lencies in other Q.F.s, and with the A.Q.F. in particular.

Purpose - enable skilled workers and professionals to move from one country to another bringing their credentials approved in their own country.

  • Recommendation - get a copy of the book A World Class Education by Dr. Vivien Stewart or her Paper - Gearing Up for Global Competitiveness: Education reform and Change Beyond ASEAN.

  • MRA - Mutual Recognition Agreements

  • 3. How do we help prepare our students - by challenging them to aim for excellence. In FOCUS, Mike Schmoker explains how we can achieve high level of learning.

His motto is:Elevate the Essentials to Radically Improve Student Learning

  • What is essential for schools?

    1. reasonably coherent curriculum

    2. sound lessons

    3. purposeful reading and working

  • To improve, Mike wants schools to focus on the essentials and ignore the fads, programs and innovations that prevent us from focusing on the essentials

    1. What we teach: like in Singapore Schmoker proposes a lean and coherent curriculum that is to be taught to mastery.

  • 2. How we teach:

    a. The lesson must have a clear objective like; Find the sum of two mixed numbers.

    b. Use an interactive lecture and direct teaching in small segments followed by guided practice.

  • c. Check for understanding

    d. Continue with another segment of the lesson.

3.Authentic literacy - make students explain, argue, reason out, discuss as an integral part of how we teach.
