These events showcase helpful information about ASE testing and other programs. The first event, “Testing 1, 2, 3—Three Key Elements of ASE Test Preparation”, focused on how to properly use the ASE study guides, handy ways to evaluate test questions, and an overview of the Computer-Based Testing (CBT) platform. The second webinar in our ongoing series was offered on January 29th and focused on analyzing each type of ASE test question in more detail. The feedback we have received from attendees has been very positive and we plan on offering at least one webinar per month for the remainder of 2013. President & CEO: Tim ZilkeV.P., Communications: Tony Molla ([email protected])Contact Information: National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) 101 Blue Seal Drive, S.E., Suite 101, Leesburg, VA 20175 www.ase.com Register: www.myASE.com • 877-346-9327

In response to requests from the industry for a certification category

aimed at entry-level technicians and those doing routine maintenance, ASE will debut its new Auto Maintenance and Light Repair certification test in June 2013. Designated as G1, this new specialty certifica-tion measures a technician’s knowledge over a wide range of automotive systems as it relates to maintenance and light repair. To earn certi-fication in this new specialty, candidates must achieve a passing score on the exam and have at least one year of full-time work experience.

“Since about 70% of all work being performed in repair shops across the nation is maintenance-based, this new test category focuses on the knowledge necessary to successfully perform the most common mainte-nance and light repair tasks,” said Tim Zilke, ASE President & CEO. “If you are a technician performing mainte-nance and light repair services, the new ASE Auto Maintenance and Light Repair (G1) certification is for you.”

Developed by industry experts and the certification professionals at ASE, the Auto Maintenance and Light Repair certification is slightly different from the regular ASE certifications. This new specialty will have a one-year require-ment of hands-on work experience in auto maintenance and light repair to qualify. Half of that requirement may be met by appro-priate vocational training. However, like all other ASE certifica-tions, the credential will be valid for five years and will be avail-able through the more than 400 ASE testing locations across the country. Upon passing the G1 test, a technician will receive a shoulder insignia, wall certificate and wallet card.

The new G1 certification provides an assessment of an indi-vidual’s technical knowledge for performing bumper-to-bumper maintenance and light repairs in the critical areas of engine sys-tems, automatic transmission/transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical, and heating and air conditioning.

“The Auto Maintenance and Light Repair test is a new spe-cialty category for ASE,” Zilke continued. “It was developed in response to requests from the automotive service industry for a credential specifically geared toward those engaged in ve-hicle maintenance and routine repair procedures. We have held several workshops over the past few years, working with industry

experts to identify and define a wide range of tasks with which to measure a technician’s knowledge in this area.”

Approximately 1,000 technicians participat-ed in the pilot test held during the winter testing session to complete the development process prior to launching the G1 test in

July. The first general testing will be available in the 2013 July–August test window.

The G1 test contains 55 scored questions, plus 10 unscored research questions, and those taking it will have an hour and a half (90 minutes) to complete it. The questions, written by ser-vice industry experts familiar with all aspects of maintenance and light repair, are entirely job-related. Like any other ASE cer-tification, the G1 tests knowledge of the skills you need to know to do the job; theoretical knowledge is not covered.

You can download a free copy of the Auto Maintenance and Light Repair (G1) Study Guide on the ASE website at www.ase.com. The Study Guide contains the Test Specifications and the Task List, to provide you with a map of the topics covered on the test.

This new test category focuses

on knowledge of the skills necessary to

successfully perform the most common maintenance and light repair tasks.

Self-taughtGrowing up, I was always good with my hands, and I enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together. As a me-chanic, I am completely self-taught—via the old magazines of the day, such as the Gus Wilson stories in Popular Mechan-ics, Popular Hot-Rodding, Car Craft, and others.

In the late ’60s, my best friend’s dad bought a Gulf Service Station, and I hung out there after school. Eventually I began pumping gas and doing small repairs—tire repairs, and so on. My biggest accom-plishment at that time was replacing a timing chain on a Pontiac Bonneville. Pon-tiac engines of that time would go almost exactly 50,000 miles, and the fiber teeth would come off the cam gear, causing a no-start.

Certifications—the path to advancementI have worked at various dealerships, as well as Firestone and Goodyear stores, and over the years, I’ve moved a few times, so I have worked in small, medium and large marketplaces. I have worked on every kind of vehicle you can think of, including Rolls-Royce and Bentley when

ASE NewsASE Certs Open Doors

I lived in Palm Springs, California, to the old VW bug. I have built race cars and bikes, and competed at Norwalk [Ohio] Raceway Park in the 1970s when it was merely a two-lane drag strip in the middle of cornfields.

I took my first ASE certification test in 1989. My employer was offering me a 50-cent per hour raise for each of the eight automobile certifications. But later, during that period where I moved a lot, those certification helped me gain jobs. They opened doors for me.

Better quality of lifeBeing certified as a Master Tech allowed me to advance professionally—first be-coming an instructor at WyoTech. It was also a requirement for my current job as an analyst with the state of Michigan. Today, I inspect parts and vehicles in order to mediate complaints between consumers and facilities. I also make a lot more money, have good benefits, including retirement, and more stable work hours. I wouldn’t be here without ASE certification.

We thank the following donors supporting the ASE Industry Education Alliance

“Since ASE is a voluntary certification, only a certain number of people will volunteer.

But it says a lot about the QUALITY of the people who go to the trouble to certify. Throughout my career, my customers

appreciated my certifications, and they appreciated the level of service I gave them.”

Jeffrey R. Homan Analyst and ASE-certified Master Automotive Technician Regulatory Monitoring Division Michigan Secretary of State Office

For Jeffrey Homan, ASE certifications opened doors in new cities and for new opportunities throughout his career.
