Health Note from Barbara Hartung, Parish Nurse

TAKE CHARGE

Select firm, richly colored apples and eat the peels for maximum nutrients; apple juice hassignificantly fewer healthful phytochemicals and only a fraction of the fiber of whole fruit.Apple season begins in late summer and last until early winter. (Out-of-season apples havebeen imported or kept in cold storage.) They keep best in the crisper of a refrigerator witha damp cheese cloth added for moisture. Apples do lose nutrients over months of storage, but retain enough to be a healthy choice. The Environmental Working Group<www.ewg.org> lists apples among the fruits most prone to pesticide residue. If that’s aconcern, it’s worth buying organic fruit. You can reduce pesticide residue onconventionally grown apples by lightly scrubbing under running water for 15 seconds.Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter

If you have questions, please call Barb Hartung at (314) 772-6651.
