AS Media Studies: Music magazine market researchI have been doing some market research within a small focus group to find out about the target audience and the style and context of a new music magazine.I have carried out this research by using a survey and collecting primary research. Within thissurvey I asked some specific questions such as the gender and age of the individual where as some of the questions are more open such as What is the maximum amount of money you will spend on a magazine.

Looking at these results from the survey you can see that the most popular age of individuals was 16-21. I can see that 90.91% of participants are this age, indicating that the majority of them are young adults, which could suggest they have similar interests in music or music genres. Therefore I would focus more on this age group as theres a lot more, however also add some points which older participants would enjoy so that each age group would enjoy or have some interest in the magazine itself.

Looking at these results, you can see that 81.82% of individuals who answered are female where as 18.18% are males. This clearly indicates that the most popular gender to answer this survey was females. This could suggest that to make a more successful magazine it would have to be aimed at the female population. This could imply that I would have to use subjects which interest females, as they may have different interests to males, such as pop bands/artists.

Looking at these results you can see that more than half of the participants that answered are unemployed as 63.64% of people answered no to Are you employed?. This would mean Id have to think of a reasonable price and consider that the people who may be purchasing it may not have a lot of money to be spending on music magazines.

You can see that the majority of participants already read music magazines; therefore you could use what theyre interested in, in my magazine so they might buy it. However, 45.45% do not read music magazines so Id have to see what theyre interested in and use it in my magazine in hope they would buy it.

Looking at what people work as can help determine a social class for the people purchasing the magazine. Additionally, you may be able to guess how much free time they have when it comes to reading them, therefore Id need to make my magazine interesting to catch their attention and make them want to spend their free time reading it. Also, again, you can pick a reasonable price which everyone would be happy to pay.

Looking at these results, I would use stuff such as popular genres and artists in hope to make it more interesting or appealing. I would also use a wide range of topics to make It appeal to a wider range of people. I would also avoid adding certain topics/artists/bands or genres which dont interest people.

Looking at these results, you can see that every participant has heard of Q and 80% or more have heard of the following: Mixmag, Kerrang, and NME. This could suggest they have interests in these magazines; therefore I could research these magazines and use similar topics in mine to make it more appealing. I could also see what genres of music these magazines focus on and use them in my magazine. This may interest participants more. I could also research what artists/bands these magazines on and use them in my magazine in hope to grab the participants attention.

Using this information, I can make the main genre of my magazine Pop, as 90.91% of participants say thats what they listen to, therefore that what would most likely come across as the most interesting to them. Also, R&B and HipHop are quite popular as they are the next 2 most popular answers with 45.45% of participants choosing it as a genre they listen too. Therefore my main focus for genres would be these 3. I would also use use/ talk about other genres through the magazine so Im appealing to everyones interests. However I wouldnt talk about jazz as none of the participants are interested in jazz so it may make the magazine unappealing to people.

I would add these genres into the magazine as they interest some participants so it would be fair to cover all genres, and not just the popular ones.

Also, Looking at these results, I wouldnt make the magazine cost any more than 2 as then most people would be happy to pay that. I could also make the magazine more eye catching by adding competitions to make people who said theyd pay less than 2 more interested on pay more, as there is prize opportunitys.
