2. My front page was inspired by the NME magazine, because of the mid close uppicture ; I like how different and bold and brave it was to have a good quality picturebeen blown up fit the whole page. It is its bold bright colours are what you see firstthe powering contrast between the beguile tones set off a high quality standard . Iliked the simplicity of the cover; this makes the artist focus of attention and bringstemptation to the readers as not much is written on it.Other magazines such as VIDE magazine below uses a bold colour background thatantipode the picture , this makes the picture more dominate and noticeable. The color blocking and mixture of the bold fonts and sizes influences me to themagazines because they are edgy and they add a little personal touch to the cover. 3. On my front page I used a uniform color of purple, blue and white. I choose this color because they fit well together and goes well with the image. I used a bold block font to make the stand out more. I didnt crop or edit the picture because it had a good background which contrasts to the artists pale face. The image I have chosen is a mid close up, with a less widen framing. I chose this image because of the natural tones and colors it had. Using a close up gives more tension to the reader or buyer because it is noticeable and creates a lot of connection with the reader, by using a close up it would have been hard to air brush because the readers could see the editing and find the magazine an un-unique type. 4. For my content page I went and looked at more of NMEs different style; because it is close to my music genre, from that I then picked out which designs I like. The audacious fonts are striking, outstanding and eye-catching, ittell the reader what the page is about out The page features short quotes from the artist that will be in the magazine. This also makes the reader to bemore drawn to the find out more and make them buy the magazine. Other features such as the short articles andbold number pages makes the page look neat and easy to read. I decided to use this layout because of organised look it has, is not messy and clouted like the other typical rockindie magazines. The different fonts showed a sign of uniqueness and individuality which I want my readercome across of in the magazine. The immense numbers are the sub main stories in the magazine which againmakes it easier to get to the pages you want quicker. The most images are clear because is done in a high quality standard and not from a gig which could fade awaythe artist or the event. They also give a visual understanding of the stories which is also easy and straight forwardfor the reader to know what will be in the magazine. 5. My contents page shows the reader what the magazine is like and what will be in it. With the advantage of takinga lot of pictures in past gigs and pictures I took of friends for this coursework, it made it more easier to do acontent page especially like this. As my magazine music genre is Indie I wanted to use the concert, gig and liveevents pictures more because they look more natural to the concept of the genre, instead of trying to makesomeone look like an Inide artist. The same with NME the pictures are edge, dark tones and reflect the magazinewell. I used different type of fonts to represent the persona of the artist but also to make the stand out and different. This catches the readers eyes and makes it to easier to differentiate between the other stories. Since there aredifferent types of indie music I used different fonts to maybe suggest to the reader the style of indie the artistsings. I used the INSIDE THIS WEEK NME style instead of just having the contents this I think makes more ofa statement; is bold, big and special. I choose to do the layout like this because I was inspired by the NMEs content page. The layout looks organizedand well set out, it is also more easy to read and follow. 6. For the double page I considered about using the most common and popular way of designing a content page whichfrom my research you can see. Most of the double page as one picture on one side and then a text on the other. Tocreate mine I decided to do exactly the same but in my style. The backgrounds of a double page are most likely one block of colour with just a text on the top. While researching atothers I came across the Florence and the machine NME double page which had the words USA behind it; this linkedin with the topic of the article on the page and the image so I used that idea. The images I used for the double page spread inspired me from the Q magazine with Pink as the main feature. As afan of Pink you could tell that the picture showed who she was as an artist and a lady; the photographer captured anun model like which showcasing her natural being. So I decided to capture my artist in her natural state and moodsand faces to tell the audience and her fans the real nature of Jane Alane this makes both the artists and reader moreconnected. Most of the double page had a masthead or a title or quote that was big and bold to draw there readers in. I looked atthe NME double page of Graham Coxon. I looked at the quote and the style of the quote and noticed they used 2different colors with the black one showing more importance words. I liked how the words are all tightly together and Ithink it showed and used the best quote to represent the person. 7. For my double page I took all the inspiration from my pervious research of NMEand Q magazine. I edited the pictures to make the look a bit more edgy and retro. Ichanged the original color to black and white and I also cropped the picture so thatthere would not be a lot of space around it, this also means that I would not have totransform the shape.I choose to use different style of fonts on the quote to make each word stand out, Iwanted the wording of this quote to impact the artist in a good way. I used a simplebold Arial font to the JA because it was important and I wanted to makeawareness to the context of the page.I again used the same color uniform to match with rest of the pages, this will makethe audience aware of the magazine brand even more. 8. The photography I used for my friends as the models. I looked for someone that fitin with the style of genre magazine I was going so I looked for there appearance, style and mise en sene. I used my Nikon D3100 14MP DSLR camera for most ofmy pictures with natural lighten; i took the images at verious places the Frontpage and DPS were all token in my friends bedroom; i took it there beacuse it fitin with her look and also the music genre. Indie is more of a free lifestyle cultureso i wanted the pictures to be natural and in context. The other pictures i tookwere from going to gigs with my friends who are a band and also shoots i took ofmy friend for fashion blogs. The only probleam i had with the front cover was that itook the image too close and didnt leave any space at the top to have a blodmasthead, this repeated to most of my pictures so i had to work around what ihad. 9. This would be my third time using Photoshop although this would be the first time I am doing iteducationally. As I started this course I grew to acknowledge and learn the skills and tools ofPhotoshop SC3.Contrast:One of the main tools I used during the editing of my music magazine was the contrast and brightnesstool. I use this to change the color of the picture to black and white, the reason why I did this was becauseI wanted the color scheme to change and not make the whole magazine plain with one or certain type ofcolors. The black and white pictures stand out more than the colored pictures because they are differentand edgy. Also Indie culture was introduced a long time ago in England and most of Indie fans still like thatold school, hippie, classic look. Look at target audience mood board for more Indie culture influence. 10. PhotoshopCropping:I used the cropping tool to make the picture not have a lot of space on itand to also make it much more smaller. I also cropped it because Iwanted the image to only show one of the walls not two. This makes theimage much more professional and simple. I cropped six images so theproblem I had to tackle was to make each one of them the same size. After doing it manually I found out the ruler tool which guides you to theright measurement without stretching and bending the image 11. PhotoshopText:The font tool will be the most tool I used during this course. On thefront cover you will see that I didnt use a lot of different Fonts becauseI wanted to make it simple and clear and make the artist the main focuspoint. As for the content page I used various fonts to go with the artistand article because I wanted to give each of them their own vide andoddity. The same thing came in mind with the DSP bust this time Iwanted each of the words to go with the artists. I wanted the wordingand quote to be important so I made each one of them different fromeach other so that the reader could pay much more attention on them. 12. PhotoshopOther Tools and skills:I used the lasso and magic toolat the beginning of my editingto take out the background onmy front cover but the imagewas too complex to do soI used the shape toolbecause of the hair and to draw the lines onsurrounding. Which made methe content page.aware for feature references to This made the pagemake sure I plan out the mise look more organizeden sene more and the style. and clear to read andfollow. 13. Mood Board 14. Social groupThe social group that my target audience will fit in is the 14-21 years old males and females. Working class and loves festivals. I put the price of my magazine as 2.00because I believe most of my readers would be in secondary school or college.I aim to get the Hippies and Indie pop; out going teenagers as my main readers but withIndie being a big genre of music I believe that all type of social groups could turn to it for a good informal interviews and freebies. 15. Target AudienceMy target audience for my music magazine is male and female age 14-21.Primo magazine would fit in with the target audience I have chosen because of its fun and skittish. It will bring a connection to artist and readers with interviews and news about the latest events and trends every month with an exclusive this week magazine about the most important news in Indie music. The language I use for the magazine is informal which would appeal the readers more and link themto a much more relaxed and comfortable magazine unlike Q and Rolling Stones. This wouldappeal to my young target audience because it would be something they are familiar with andsomething they hear/speak/see on a day-to-day basics. The good sell line which draws readers in and makes them buy the magazine more; and thetraditional Indie style and culture of the artist makes the magazine more attractive. 16. Forms And ConventionsPrimo challenges some forms and conventions of real magazine like NME and Q.The front cover challenges these forms and conventions more because It does not have a some of the main features of a typical magazine; it does not have a edited background or an thumbnail of other images or article. The content page also does not have some of the forms and conventions such as an editors letter. The double page spread does not also have the typical large printed artists name on it.I tried to change and move a bit away from the normal forms and conventions of music magazine because of the stereotype of the indie genre which is freedom, unique and different. I wanted the magazine to be different and identify what the genre is but at the same time I wanted it to be like a magazine. It features the latest new and events, artists from the Indie movement. Some of the things that I keep as a typical forms and conventions are the basic uniform colors. The colors I used not bias of stereotypical I used blue, purple and white and black which balance out both genders.I have images of models acting like artists and using the direct to address pose which is lookingstraight into the camera or reader. The images fit in with the style of the magazine it connotesout-going and young and free lifestyle. With the magazine been called Primo which meanshighly valuable and most essential our readers will always remember the name. 20. DistributionI would like to think that my magazine would bepublished by Bauer Company, because theypublish other music magazines such asKERRANG and Q They have over With 6,400employees around the world meaning mymagazine would be worldwide to everyone, withoffices from USA, Spain, France, Austria, Mexico,China, United Kingdom and Nigeria. They also use media cross convergence such as TV and radio. With stations from Kiss TV, 4Music and The Box. This world mean my magazines can link in with other brands and get more readers. They sent out over 38 million magazines in a week which would make my magazine more accessible. They have been around since 1953 and sells to a range of all ages and all style and genre. This also indicates that the company is with good connections, history and experience for my music magazine. 21. The Preliminary TaskAs you can see the change I have done between these two images. When I startedto the preliminary task I designed it in Microsoft publisher and didnt really plan it out.As I begin to learn more about Photoshop I developed more skills which lead to myfinal front cover. I used the forms and conventions of a magazine like the mastheadand tag lines but I didnt think of where they should go unlike my final front cover itlooks like is been planed and organized. 22. Evaluation of SkillsOverall I think I learned a lot from the research to editing on Photoshop. I learned about the differenttype of shots I need or would be best for a magazine front cover. I understand the term mise enscene and how important it was to think about props and costume.By using Photoshop I know that versions have different fonts and some dont have the ones youused. I learned the different tools such as the burn tool which I didnt use on my final work butunderstood it and helped my class mate. I know the uses of the magic wand, healing andpaintbrush tools and many more.I also learned some of the codes and conventions of a magazine like the left side third and tag line, from my preliminary task you will see that I didnt use most of these codes and conventions.
