What can I expect from the A level French course?
According to the AQA exam board website:
The AS specification builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills gained
at GCSE. It constitutes an integrated study with a focus on language, culture
and society. It fosters a range of transferable skills, including communication,
critical thinking and creativity, which are valuable to the individual and to
society.
Students will develop their understanding of themes relating to the society and
culture of the countries where French is spoken, and their language skills; they
will do this by using authentic spoken and written sources in French.
The approach is a focus on how French-speaking society has been shaped,
socially and culturally, and how it continues to change. Students study aspects
of the social context together with aspects of the artistic life of French-speaking
countries.

How is the course assessed?
Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing
Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes; total raw mark: 90
Paper 2: Writing
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes; total raw mark: 50
Paper 3 Speaking
Duration: 12–14 minutes plus 15 minutes supervised preparation time; total raw
mark: 60
During the course of the year:
You will have an assessment in the first two weeks of term which will
look at the work you have done over the summer as well as assess your
suitability for the course.
You will sit a formal mock exam in March.
You will be tested informally in class on a regular basis, for example
through vocabulary tests
What should I do now?
Please do the tasks outlined in this booklet - some grammar exercises,
translation and a piece of written work. There is a vocab list for you to look at
on the two topics we will cover first.
If you are stuck on the grammar exercises there are grammar explanations
readily available on the Internet, but we particularly like the ones you can find
on the University of Texas website. If you search Google for “Texas French
Grammar” you will find it easily.
You might like to do some independent work. Here are some ideas for how you
can access French in your own time:
Sky
television
TV5 French television channel intended for a world audience.
News, entertainment, films, quiz shows etc. Some films have
subtitles in French to make the language easier to follow. You
will find this channel in the international section.
Euronews A news channel available in many languages including
French. Find it in the news section. You must select French as
your preferred language using your sky remote control. Press
the services button on your remote then on screen select
system set up then language and subtitles. Selecting French
will only affect Euronews. (also very useful website:

Watching the news in English will help you form opinions that
will be useful for your language lessons and your oral exam
when you must give your opinion on issues that affect
Francophone countries. One of the main problems we
encounter when preparing for the oral exam is that
students do not have basic knowledge of current affairs
and issues and therefore no opinions.

Vocabulary and grammar
Phone Apps
The two we recommend are memrise and duo lingo. Both are free. We especially like
memrise for learning vocabulary specific to the course. We have a memrise group you can
join to help you work with others.
I’ve got a test at the start of the course! What should I revise?
The test will be on the aspects of grammar covered in this booklet, in particular the present
tense of regular verbs and the four verbs aller, avoir, être, faire. There will also be a test on
this vocabulary from the first two topics we will study:

To conjugate an -ER verb in the present tense, remove the infinitive ending and then add the appropriate endings. For example, here are the present tense conjugations for the regular -ER

Please prepare a piece of written work. Write a few sentences for each section:

This work booklet is supposed to take about 8 hours to complete. We have
allowed time for looking up grammar points on the Internet if necessary
but if you are checking everything it will take longer – don’t leave it until
the last minute, do a little each week.
If you need to borrow a French-English dictionary to help you please just
ask. We recommend you buy one before you start the French AS course.
The Concise Oxford Hachette French dictionary (hardback) is a good one
and costs about £15 on www.amazon.co.uk
