Every verb has 2 parts:STEM + ENDING
•The stem is the part without the –ar, -er, or –ir ending. For example, the stem of hablar is “habl-”•When the ending is –ar, -er, or –ir it is called an infinitive and means “to” For example, Hablar means “to talk”•Unless we want to say “to talk” we need to CONJUGATE the infinitive.
Why do we conjugate verbs?Let’s take “hablar” for an example.• Remember the word for I is “yo”• What happens if we add “yo” to
hablar without conjugating the verb? For example, Yo hablar.
• Since hablar means “to talk” if we don’t conjugate the verb we would be saying “I to talk”
• That doesn’t make sense!!
4
So we HAVE to conjugate the verb to say that I talk. How do we do this?
1. Step 1 – Take the ending OFF of the infinitive. In this example, the –ar. You should have the stem left (habl)
2. Look at your subject pronoun chart (the first slide and find the box that indicates “I.” (This would be the first box)
3. Use the chart on the next slide to find the correct ending. In this case “o” and add it to the stem. Yo hablo.
