Inc.

Introduced by our founder, Sir Ove Arup, the integrated design concept requires the involvement of all professional design and engineering disciplines in the design process, in which all design aspects are considered thoroughly and integrated into a whole.

This concept defines not only the company structure but also our client relationships. Arup believes that successful projects result from engaging the client at the beginning of the assignment. Our teams form close relationships with our clients that continue to completion and beyond.

We are renowned for our multidisciplinary skills from planning and architecture to building design incorporating structural, civil, MEP engineering and other specialist skills.

We adopt a holistic approach to any project, which enables us to offer an integrated design service to our clients.

Creativity, innovation and technical excellence are, in our view, inherent to the design process.

Groundbreaking innovation

We use state-of-the-art computer modelling and material applications, which enables us to work within the parameters of any given project.

Arup is responsible for many firsts in Asia and around the world including masterplanning the world’s first eco-communities, installing viscous dampers to reinforce superstructures, adopting a rigorous fire-engineering approach to enhance safety of the building in use, and conducting advanced seismic analyses of super tall buildings in seismic zones.

Arup continuously explores new technologies and provides the best engineering solutions to challenging and complex technical problems, making possible what others think impossible.

Sir Ove Arup was an engineer and a philosopher, the founder of Arup and the source of our firm’s values. He believed wholeheartedly in total design and advocated the social usefulness of engineers. His lasting legacy is the positive impact Arup makes on the built environment and for us, this means to shape a better world.

Arup draws upon skills and capabilities from diverse disciplines to seek ever better ways to imagine, design and shape the built environment.

11

Arup works across all building types – from super high-rises to street level and below, from luxury to modest settlements, and at all scales – from the tiniest detail to complex mutidisciplinary projects for entire cities.

With a range of skills that include structural, mechanical, electrical, public health engineering to building physics, façade design, and vertical transportation, our building designers also work closely with our specialists in acoustics, fire safety, wind engineering, seismic, computational fluid dynamics and programme and project management.

Alongside realising exciting forms, our designers are equally focused on the challenges of making tomorrow’s buildings greener, safer, more adaptable for future changes, and more comfortable for people to use.

Sustainable building design is the focus and approach of everyone engaged in building design at Arup. By working to improve the lifecycle performance of the built environment – from concept to construction, through operation, adaptation and retrofitting – Arup is enabling clients to achieve sustainable outcomes and best value throughout projects and across their portfolios.

Through creative collaborations with talented architects and designers, we have successfully delivered some of the most challenging and iconic structures in the region and around the world.

We are internationally renowned for realising unusual shapes and super skyscrapers. At the forefront of ambitious tall building design, we have pioneered numerous innovative solutions such as the use of high strength concrete and concrete filled tubes. Our engineers and designers are also fluent in cutting-edge geotechnical engineering and seismic technologies, which makes us best placed to realise the maximum development potential for tall buildings.

Arup leads the field in the design of foundations and deep basements, both in Asia and around the world. The need to minimise ground movements and the typically congested areas where tall buildings are constructed drives the design process. Ground conditions vary and Arup has the knowledge and expertise to provide innovative and practicable solutions to difficult geological and foundation conditions.

Arup has introduced many new technologies to this region such as the implementation of shaft-grouted barrettes and piles for tall buildings in Hong Kong and overseas.

We work across earthquake-prone areas, from Japan to the Philippines, delivering responsible building design that demands the application of expertise in all aspects of earthquake engineering.

Our most notable designs include Nicolas G Hayek Center in Tokyo which adopts an innovative self-mass damper system to reduce seismic excitation and St Francis Shangri-La Place in Manila which uses our patented damped outrigger system to withstand earthquakes.

From GREEN TOMORROW in South Korea – Asia’s first LEED® Platinum certified building to CIC ZCB – Hong Kong’s first zero carbon building, Arup has a long track record of successful green building design and has pioneered many of the key ideas and strategies in this field.

A strong tradition of research and the desire to find innovative methods have led us to develop a number of unique design and assessment tools such as the Sustainable Project Appraisal Routine (SPeAR™), lifecycle-based carbon and resource modelling. We are familiar with a wide range of green building rating systems including LEED®, BREEAM™ and Green Star, and are experienced in helping clients gain the required regional accreditations for new and existing buildings.

Landmark 81, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

The 461m tall building is to be built on the bank of the Saigon River, situated in the high-class and multi-functional ecological urban area, Vinhomes Central Park. The Landmark 81 is expected to break a number of records such as the highest observatory centre and apartment building in Vietnam and the highest restaurant in Southeast Asia.

Times Square, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

The new 164m tall building houses a five-star hotel, top quality serviced apartments, office facilities and retail space. Arup designers and engineers enhanced its value and effectiveness by combining the two buildings originally proposed by the former architect into one L-shape building. This new design also helps to enhance the overall stiffness of the structure and reduces construction costs.

Rail designArup is experienced in all modes of rail including high speed, metros, light, mono, and heavy haul, and multi-modal transport hubs. Our multidisciplinary teams address whole-life issues that include safety, reliability, operability and maintenance, and the critical interfaces between the engineered solution and the human element for operators of the system, users and third parties.

In Asia, Arup has decades of experience designing topside developments for profitable rail companies. Our portfolio includes residential, retail and office developments. Arup’s experience reflects the utmost vigilance in noise and vibration assessments, and leading edge structural and geotechnical engineering to ensure the safety and comfort of occupants above an operating train station.

Rail is an environmentally friendly mode of travel. However, rail stations and the auxiliary services required to run rail are traditionally energy-intensive facilities. Arup tackles these challenging issues with great success, embedding energy saving strategies such as natural ventilation and light, in station design.

Arup has worked with developers and architects on waterside sites, applying creative designs at the water’s edge to minimise cost and risk and maximise returns.

As the population continues to grow, there is an increasing need and recognition of the value of designing quality urban places of habitation. Achieving this requires an approach that encompasses urban design, planning, transport, landscape, infrastructure, sociology and economics.

The location of a waterfront site provides major opportunities for generating added value for a developer. There are a number of associated issues often overlooked or underestimated, such as flood defences, ground conditions and statutory controls which can have a major effect on a scheme. This requires careful integration of development levels and infrastructure with flood defences and accommodating water users to optimise interaction and benefits from the location.

Arup has been at the forefront of design review in Vietnam and surrounding countries for the last decades. Our design review projects have ensured that the latest generation high-rise buildings and mega infrastructure projects comply with local design codes. This in turn has provided a high degree of safety for project users.

Because of our extensive experience in design reviews, our senior staff have contributed their expertise in formulating the local codes of practice for peer reviews.

As reviewers we provide guidance as necessary, and challenge the design team to demonstrate that they have the appropriate resources and processes to implement best practice.
