The following artworks were created by children from prep to grade six, at Yarra Glen Primary School in the wake of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

In the immediate aftermath of the fires, the school became a hub for community members. The children seemed naturally drawn to art making and the art-room became a safe space within the school. The burnt and smouldering landscape could be seen through the windows of the art-room. One of the first activities undertaken by the children was to paint colourful scenes on the windowpanes in order to create a positive environment and outlook. These artworks were made in the days, weeks, and months following the fires.

In collaboration with the school’s principal Joe Pacquola, art teacher Lorraine Parfitt, and with the permission of the children’s parents and carers, over 150 of these artworks were donated to the Cunningham Dax Collection as part of the Bushfire Project.
