Like ed Koch, i frequently ask the question, “how’re we doing?” Mine is not a personal question, not quite a global one, but more or less a national one. My yard-stick is more moral than monetary. i tend to fall back on President Kennedy’s standard that, “this country cannot afford to be materially rich and spiritually poor.” that is why i recently reread some-thing called the national Arts index*, produced by Americans for the Arts, where i learned that attendance at symphonies, museums and professional theaters is down, but international audiences have grown significantly. Philanthropic giving is up, while the art’s share of giving is down. that’s understandable given the needs of a society in recession. Yet oddly, more young people are graduating with a four-year arts degree than ever before. Perhaps that accounts for the 15 percent increase in the number of working artists from 1996 to 2010 (1.9 to 2.2 million). corporate support of the arts is way down, yet participation in the arts is up. so what’s going on here?

tv’s norman Lear once said that he’d be a fool to think that his “little situa-tional comedy (All in the Family) could change things. But it created conver-sation.” taking a cue from Lear, we at ArtsWestchester decided it was time to start a conversation. the idea was to take the pulse of our community, which, after all, is a microcosm of the country. We wanted to know why so many parents are taking their little girls for ballet lessons, but aren’t going to the ballet? there’s the young professional who tells us that he doesn’t participate, but he sure wants his kids to learn to play an instrument.

Fortunately, the new York state council on the Arts and the Westchester community Foundation were on the same page. And so, with their support, we have begun a series of conversations facilitated by douglas gould, a strategic communications consultant. do the arts matter to people? And, if so, why? recently, i watched a group of cancer survivors forgetting their troubles molding clay. A group of seniors listened with me to a Baroque medley at the Music conservatory. Latina women are sharpening their english by docenting at the Katonah Museum. Parkinson patients are danc-ing at the rye Arts center. You couldn’t hear a pin drop in a packed room at a string concert at the Pleasantville Middle school, while parents and grandparents “qvelled” (beamed proudly).

so, what’s going on? clearly, as a community, we want the arts in our lives. We value it in our schools, in the way we care for our neighbors and as a life affirming and shared value. But who should pay for it? those who use it? Or is it a shared value requiring a shared responsibility? We know the arts are good for the economy, with a $156 million impact in Westchester county. nationally, u.s. exports of arts goods (e.g., movies, paintings, jew-elry) increased from $56 to $64 billion between 2009 and 2010, up 12 percent. Former neA chair dana gioia tells us, “the role of culture…must go beyond economics. it is not focused on the price of things, but on their value.”

Please, join this conversation. email Joanne Mongelli at [email protected] for more information.

Arts and entertainment just got a big boost in the city of Peekskill. At a May 15 press conference, acting city Manager Brian O. havranek announced a 17-year agreement between the city of Peekskill and

red house entertainment for the management and operation of the Paramount theater, which closed its doors back in October, 2012.

red house ceO Kurt heitmann announced that the theater is being

rebranded as “Paramount hudson valley,” and provided the first lineup of performances for 2013. upcoming highlights include the Westchester Youth symphony on June 9; Kiddie Palooza, featuring Louie Miranda on July 13, and a Jazz and Blues Festival, in association with the Peekskill Bid on July 27.

“the Paramount is an anchor of downtown,” said Bid executive director Jason Angell. “We aim to be the creative capitol of the hudson valley and the vision of the Paramount hudson valley is a key part of taking the next step.”

the agreement with red house will also provide Peekskill with a steady revenue stream, compensating the city five percent of adjusted gross income of ticket sales. red house

projects that Peekskill could realize up to $45,000 in the first year and up to $110,000 in the second. red house will be required to hold 50 shows the first year, half of which must be tick-eted. red house will also have the option to renew the 17-year lease for an additional 10 years.

“We’re looking forward to working with the city and the community,” said heitmann. “it’s a great day for this vintage theater to be reopening in Peekskill and the hudson valley.”

in July, the theater will also feature movie nights that include screen-ings of live events such as classic and rock concerts, opera, and ballet, along with independent and interna-tional films. For updated events, cal-endars, and ticket information, visit: www.paramounthudsonvalley.com.

From June 22 through August 7, summer will be in full swing. But at the caramoor center for Music and the Arts, it won’t merely be swinging. it’ll be strumming blue-grass, singing opera, performing Broadway, conducting symphonies, and using a saxophone to draw lilt-ing, liquid riffs through the night air. it’s that time of year again. in just a

few weeks, caramoor will be kicking off its 68th annual summer music festival, showcasing a prodigious lineup of performers who represent a wide variety of musical genres and range from local talents to interna-tional powerhouses.

this year, the festival itinerary is particularly exciting, replete with big-name musicians and ambitious

projects. the festival’s open-ing number, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the award-winning musical She Loves Me, is caramoor’s first-ever Broadway production and features a cast and crew adorned with accolades. Verdi in Paris will take the stage two weeks later, presenting two of leg-endary composer giuseppe verdi’s grand operas to commemorate his bicentennial. these festival show-stoppers exemplify the kind of scope caramoor achieves with its summer lineup – the kind that honors the fearless pursuit of virtuosity at its loftiest and most exhilarating.

Amid these musical hard hitters will be an array of more intimate, but no less masterful, events designed to spice up the summer months with style and soul. the American roots Music Festival will create a family-friendly environment around

folk, country, and bluegrass tunes while the 20th annual Jazz Festival will set the ambient cool with the syncopated sounds of an enduring American musical vernacular. there will be piano and acoustic guitar, classical symphonic arrangements, as well as Brooklyn rider, the cut-ting edge string quartet that has consistently defied the conventions of the orchestral tradition.

All concerts will take place in the lush gardens, courtyards, and open air theatres of caramoor’s spacious grounds. the festival will be a defining summer music experience. caramoor exudes aesthetic daring on every level and yet never fails to accommodate its audiences, a bal-ancing act it has channeled through the festival for the past 67 years. this year looks to be no different.

new exhibitions

Clay Art Center: Sana MusasamaArt, social justice and com-munity come together in a new exhibition presented at the clay Art center (cAc). Sana Masusama: My Journey, on view until June 22, details sana’s ceramic sculptures and installations that represent her travels and experiences around the world. the exhibit will include two large scale works from The Maple Tree series, which represents an abolitionist movement; piec-

es from The UnKnown/UnNamed series, which illustrates unidentified lives lost; and work from The Unspeakable series that expresses the violence and healing in women’s lives. using ceramics as a way to express global cultures and issues, the exhibit involves mostly earthy colors and somber tones that visually connect to the message of the pieces. ranging from the large standing pieces to mounted wall pieces, there is a good amount of variety that touches upon many different issues. When everyday material possessions are transformed into exotic ani-mals, interesting trees and other strange pieces of art, you can’t help but observe in wonder. On display from June 1 through August 4, the hudson river Museum presents columbian artist Federico uribe’s Fantasy River. this 5,000 square foot installation displays the artist’s creativity with bright colors and lively creations. these include flowing “water,” rows of shovel handle “corn,” a suitcase “boat,” and many animals, including birds in flight and galloping horses. using materials such as leather shoes, books, baby bottles, coins, screws and more, the visual aspect of this fantasy world is also fantastically impressive. By recycling these materials, he also pays respect to nature by giving books and paper back to “trees” and leather from shoes back to “animals” in a creative way. For more info, visit: www.hrm.org.

public artPLaceMaking: re-enVisioning white PLains

the village of Ossining recently unveiled Ossining 3d, a sculpture exhibition that takes visitors on an open-air walk through one and a half miles of Ossining’s victorian homes and historic buildings, and ends at the downtown waterfront area. twenty five sculptures were selected from 100 submissions in this juried exhibition that will provide free access to art for thou-sands of expected visitors.

Public art is valuable to communi-ties for aesthetic and economic reasons, but it also represents the power of the arts to bring people together as a community. Local government, bicentennial spon-sors, volunteers and local busi-nesses spent three years making this project a reality. And, since the

work enhances the village’s natural beauty and architecture, the exhibi-tion reflects Ossining’s bicenten-nial theme of “honoring its Past – embracing the Future.”

sculptors from across the north-east are represented in this col-lection, including Westchester artists elizabeth Barksdale, sarah haviland and Jerome harris Parmet. reservations for docent-led tours of the exhibition, which will run through October 26, can be made by calling 914-762-6232, while maps for self-directed tours can be found next to every sculpture, at the Ossining Library and at the village’s clerk’s Office. For more informa-tion, visit: www.villageofossining.org.

When real estate gurus talk about a livable city, they mean a city which embraces the notion that green space and art are as vital to a community’s appeal as basic amenities like restaurants and public transportation.

the creation of designated cultural districts is an international movement to boost a city’s economic growth while distinguishing it as a place worth coming to visit and staying to live. inspired by successful initiatives in cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, which used cultural districts and public art programs to rejuvenate their streetscapes, ArtsWestchester asked Westchester-based artists and architects to imagine what White Plains could look like with a cultural district of its own.

the result is “Placemaking: re-envisioning White Plains,” which is on view until July 13, and is curated by nazanin h. Munroe.

the invited artists were asked to examine one-square block in the heart of the city, and envision creative public art projects for key locations. ArtsWestchester’s galleries are full with renderings, scale models, and video projections that represent a wide range of inspiring possibilities for art in the city.

As an example, ArtsWestchester’s bank vault showcases a proposal by christopher Kaczmarek in which Macy’s court street façade is transformed

into a movie screen. if realized, local and international, emerging and sea-soned artists alike could exhibit their time-lapse visions on the blank wall, bringing new audiences to the city’s center.

“Placemaking: re-envisioning White Plains” is about starting the conver-sation about art’s place in White Plains. With Music at grace church, the White Plains Performing Arts center, and ArtsWestchester all within the area of interest, the goal of the proposals is to add to the already vibrant cultural offerings of the neighborhood and create a distinctive streetscape for White Plains’ residents.

“there is an opportunity for developers and city planners to collaborate with artists in innovative ways to build more interesting and functional residential and commercial complexes,” says ArtsWestchester ceO, Janet Langsam.
