ArtsFest HistoryThis year, the Charles County

Arts Alliance is celebrating the 23rdanniversary of its first ArtsFest! TheArts Alliance, founded in 1987,spearheaded the first countywideall-day festival of the arts in 1992,called “A Touch of the Arts,” and itwas held indoors at the St. CharlesTowne Center mall in Waldorf. In1998, the arts festival was movedoutdoors to quaint Cobb Island, and it was renamed the “IslandArtsfest.” Then in 2001, the fes-tival again was on the move, thistime to the western part of thecounty — to the beautiful VillageGreen in Indian Head, and spent10 years there, as “River Artsfest.”

In 2012, ArtsFest moved to thecenter of Charles County, and thecounty seat, La Plata. So over thepast 22 years the Arts Alliance’sarts festivals have been held inthe north, south, west and cen-ter of Charles County, in order tobe easily accessible to adults, chil-dren and families everywhere, bothin the population center and inunderserved areas of the county. These ArtsFests have become

Maryland and has pursued hispassionate interest in wood-carving since 1985, followinga trip to Denver in which hewas inspired by a flight ofhand-carved ducks in a shopwindow. Burkey was near-

Over time, his well-established artistry asa decoy carver blossomed intoa full-fledged passionate com-mitment to a monumentalnew goal: the re-creation ofour beloved turn of the cen-tury carousel that once existedat the long-lost Marshall HallAmusement Park, located onthe Potomac River in westernCharles County.Burkey co-founded the
