As a child, i remember being so inconsolable watching the wicked queen poison snow White, that i actually ran out of the movie theater. steve Apkon would no doubt say: "it was the power of the image." Apkon, Founder of the Jacob Burns Film Center, explores visual literacy in his book, The Age of the Image: Redefining Literacy in a World of Screens. in Apkon's view, mere words, sounds or signals are less pungent as com-pared to images that have a more direct, immediate, intimate and fluid path to the brain. there, images can be received, processed, appropriated, reformulated and expressed. it's all in the mirror neurons. Populated as we are with images, or as Apkon calls them – visual stories – in our total environment, we listen, absorb, download, replay and express ourselves differently than we did in a pre-technological era. With new tools of com-munication available to everyone, we all have the access to record, edit and distribute our own visual stories. Apkon’s book is a call to “embrace technology and use it as a doorway to greater enrichment.” As a regular user of electronic devices, i tend to agree.

today, everyone is a producer/director and the world is a stage. What we see on the screen is real in tahrir square, Aleppo, damascus, and gaza. true, it is easier for everyone to be part of the conversation. But, can we process millions of unmediated images without blurring those we wish to retain? With a camera in every hand, will we become numb and number? Or will we learn to be more discerning? Will our visual literacy change the way we celebrate holy Week? Will we retell the story of Passover online or at vir-tual seders? And, if we could turn back the hands of time, would Youtube vid-eos have changed the outcome of the easter story? i’m just thinking.

Rye Art Center Promotes “Nature’s Art”

Nature and art come together at the rye Arts Center on April 20, in an exquisite exhibit entitled Nature’s Art: Geodes from the private collec-tion of Robert R. Wiener curated by dr. gail harrison roman. geodes are colorful crystalline structures that form inside a hollow rock. this exhibition, on view through May 24, is inspired by the natural beauty, prismatic color, and environmental context of these extraordinary pieces. Years ago, artists made their own pigments from soil and geodes, as can be found in paintings by da vinci, Michelangelo, raphael, and vermeer, among countless others.

the exhibition will also present paint-ings and sculptures that help visitors reflect on and learn about how nature and art interact. it is evident that nature has not only inspired, but has also encouraged the creation of art for centuries past. For more info, visit: www.ryeartscenter.org.

Peekskill officials have authorized acting City Manager Brian havranek to begin negotiations with red house entertainment to lease and manage the city-owned Paramount theater, which closed in October after failure to meet fundraising goals. red house,

which is based in garrison, NY, was one of three groups that answered an rFP from Peekskill seeking a new operator for the landmark theater. red house founder Kurt heitmann has stated that his team plans to hold live music events at the Paramount on Fridays and saturdays, as well as partner with local businesses to hold indoor and outdoor festivals, movie nights, camps for children, and high definition simulcasts from events all over the world to help keep the the-ater’s doors open year-round. if all goes according to plan, the theater will reopen this summer.

April 28Cherry Blossom Festival @ Turnure Park, White Plains

every spring, cherry blossom trees abound across Japan, inspiring a national celebration while fragrant flowers from the country’s national tree dot the landscape and petals blanket the ground. For the past 14 years, a taste of Japanese culture and tradition has been brought to Westchester County in a festival that mirrors this national celebration: the Cherry Blossom Festival. each year, this event draws more than 5,000 attendees who look forward to experiencing Japanese tea

ceremonies, Battodo sword demonstrations, taiko drumming, music and crafts. “the Cherry Blossom Festival is celebrated all over the world so that we may welcome spring with family and friends as well as share cultural traditions with the whole community,” says Niji No Kai President Yoko Battista. to date, Niji No Kai, a Japanese-American nonprofit and Arts Alive grantee, has donated more than 90 trees to turnure Park, where the event takes place. this year, the festival will fund the replacement of several cherry blossom trees lost in hurricane sandy. the Cherry Blossom Festival is a wonderful way to experience multiple facets of Japanese culture and a true chance to stop and smell the flowers.

April 28 The Neuberger Museum of Art Reopens its Doors

Westchester art lovers have been anticipating the re-opening of the treasured Neuberger Museum of Art for ten months. On April 28, the waiting will end when the museum officially reopens its doors for a Latin-themed celebration and an engaging, provocative new exhibition. the celebration will include refreshments, family activities and Latin jazz. the exhibition, Pre-Columbian Remix: The Art of Enrique Chagoya, Demián

Flores, Rubén Ortiz-Torres, and Nadín Ospina, artfully examines history while obscuring the lines between past and present.

With a collection that puts a contemporary spin on Pre-Columbian art, the 90 works in Pre-Columbian Remix include stone sculptures, lithographs, large-scale paintings, cyanotype prints and a monumental outdoor inflatable sculpture. Aztec, Mayan or incan art forms are fused with pop culture imagery, yielding everything from humorous to thought-provoking results. the artists explore concerns that are specific to Latin America such as national identity, cultural colonization and immigration, but also more universal themes of corruption, war, globalization and consumption.

the Neuberger Museum of Art has long been recognized as one of the greatest cultural treasures of Westchester County. the largest college museum in the united states, boasting over 6,000 modern, contemporary and African works of art, it is known for its impressive permanent collection, 25,000 square feet of gallery space, innovative exhibitions and the many educational programs that it offers to the Purchase College and Westchester communities. For more information, visit: www.neuberger.org.

April 17 Hugh Masekela @ Tarrytown Music Hall

When hugh Masekela was handed a trumpet at the age of 14, he had no idea how influential he’d become in the world of music – or that he would become a key player in the restoration of heritage in Africa. On April 17, tarrytown Music hall presents a special opportunity to see this south African-born innovator perform live. A brilliant grammy Award-winning musician and singer, Masekela is also a

talented author, composer and bandleader who, under the guidance of dizzy gillespie and Louis Armstrong, developed his own groundbreaking style of music. Feeding off of African influences rather than American ones, Masekela has been honored for his contribution to the preservation of African culture, his active voice in inspiring political change and for his music – a unique blend of sounds you just won’t hear anywhere else. April 13Tim O’Brien @ Caramoor’s Rosen House Music Room

Caramoor presents tim O’Brien, a dynamic and engaging performer, in its annual spring concert series. A versatile songwriter and musi-cian, O’Brien explores music from the unique perspective that modern music contains the echoes of older cultures. equally gifted on banjo, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki and guitar, O’Brien was surrounded by classic country and bluegrass music as a young boy, before being exposed to Bob dylan and the revolutionary folk music of his time. today, bluegrass continues to be a strong influence on his music, as he hears its roots in modal irish ballads and vintage swing.

Over the years, O’Brien’s many influences have inspired a successful career and unique sound that have awarded him recordings with the dixie Chicks, garth Brooks, and Kathy Mattea, and collaborations with steve Martin, the Chieftains, and many others. For more information, visit: www.caramoor.org.

Four Westchester County authors reflect on their relationships with their mothers in a new book, Still Here Thinking of You: A Second Chance with Our Mothers, to be published on May 1. After forming a weekly writing group, these women retold memories of their mothers that came to the forefront in their conver-sations and in their work. reflecting on their formative years and beyond, vicki Adesso, susan hodara, Joan Potter and Lori toppel examined the circumstances that shaped their mothers' lives, helping them to better understand their own relationships with their mothers. the intention of the book is to inspire readers to do the same.

the authors will present a reading and discussion in ArtsWestchester’s Arts exchange building on May 4

at 4pm. “hopefully, women who read this book will see it as a gateway,” says toppel, “to revisit treasured moments, pass by the anger and resentment, and discover their mothers’ good intentions.” For more information, visit: bit.ly/stillherethinkingofYou.
