WELCOME to Arts in ActionRaising funds, awareness while appreciating art
This year marks the 30th-plus year that Rotary Nor’wester of Port Angeles has run Arts in Action.
Rotary Nor’wester proudly serves the Olympic Peninsula through several projects including an academic excellence program to recognize outstanding eighth graders, high school scholarships and sponsorship of an Interact Program at Crescent High School in Joyce. Youth projects are an important part of Rotary Nor’wester.
In addition, Rotary Nor’wester is proud to be the organizing group behind Port Angeles’ murals. Our club has coordinated four murals in the Port Angeles downtown area, helping to give our community a great look.
The Rotary motto is “service above self” and it is rewarding to not only give back to our community, but to the world. Rotary clubs around the world have worked together to eliminate polio and we are getting very close to this goal.
Many clubs have sponsored clean water projects for areas that have a hard time obtaining potable water. Rotary is a great organization with each club helping improve their communities, and as a whole, improving the world.
The men and women of Rotary Nor’wester hope that you enjoy this year’s Arts in Action event. There are great art displays, outstanding food, fun car shows and a world class sand sculpture display. While you’re there, be sure to check out our car raffle that helps to fund the scholarships given to Port Angeles High School students each year. See you there!
— Joe CammackNor’wester Rotary President, 2012-2013

The Windermere Sand Sculpture Classic at Nor’wester Rotary’s Arts in Action Street Fair is one of the smallest and the high-est rated sand sculpture contests in North America.
It features some of the world’s top sand sculpting talent and beginning this year — something even more!
“This year marks our 10th annual event and we are bringing community on board,” says Doc Reiss, past-president of Nor’wester Rotary and Arts in Action event organizer.
With the help of master sculptor Bert Adams, two community teams — the Merrill & Ring Team and the Phoenix Dragon Mar-tial Arts School Team — will participate.
Each local team has taken lessons and learned how to work with the sand and even make their own tools for sculpting.
They will be performing on the beach — although not competing against the master sculptors. They also are not required to carve to this year’s theme, “Hollywood.”
The Windermere Sand Sculpture Classic is a qualifier for the world championship.
The master sculptor judged to be the best
will go on to next year’s World Champion-ship of Sand Sculpting.
And if you are wondering how the teams connect with the masters, Sue McGrew, one of the youngest internationally acclaimed master sand sculptors got her start in Olympia at a similar contest.
So bring your friends and family and see the master sculptors carving museum-quality works of art on Friday, July 27, and Saturday, July 28, on the beach next to City Pier in Port Angeles.
The teams are set to carve on Friday and Saturday.
The gallery of finished works will be available on Sunday, July 29, as well.
Admission to the gallery is $2 for adults and there is no charge for children younger than 12 accompanied by an adult.
All the money raised from this and similar Nor’wester Rotary events is used to fund our community improvement projects and scholarships for area students.
“We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you at the Windermere Sand Sculpture Classic,” Reiss says.

Not all sand is the same. Regular beach sand granules are too round to allow sculptors to building anything very high. In Port Angeles, several semi-trucks deliver glacial till sand from Silverdale specifically for the event.
After the truckloads of sand are brought in, wooden forms are made according to the sculptors’ requested dimensions and the sand is scooped into the frame. Layer by layer, the sand level is built up, soaked with water and packed down. This process is repeated as several wooden forms are stacked pyramid style.
The compaction of the sand with water is key — a process sculptors call “pound up.” Packing the sand isn’t just a matter of stomping on it. For the Arts in Action contest, sculptors use a heavy duty, hydraulic mechanical tamper.
After the proper pound up, artists remove the wooden frames and begin to sculpt, carve and unleash their creativity.
After a sculpture is finished, it is sprayed with a mix of four parts water and one part Elmer’s glue to keep everything together. Wires at the top of the sand sculptures discourage birds from landing on them.

The Windermere Sand Sculpture Classic competition in Port Angeles is one of the top-rated contests in North America.
It is also a qualifier contest for the World Championship of Sand Sculpting (www.wcsandsculpting.com). Whoever wins the competition in Port Angeles is automatically guaranteed a spot.
Sand sculptors will have three days (Friday-Sunday) to construct a sculpture reflecting this year’s theme of “Hollywood.”
All the action takes place at Hollywood Beach, near the Red Lion Hotel and Port Angeles City Pier.
Admission to the sand sculpture “gallery” to see the art up close is $2 for adults and free for children 12 and younger (accompanied by an adult).
The sculptures can be seen at a distance from the pier at no charge.
People can cast votes for their favorite sculpture during the event for a nominal fee.
The artist whose sculpture receives the most votes will win the People’s Choice award.
The sculptors will review each other’s work and judge according to a set criteria to determine first through third places.
This year’s lineup of artists includes:

BERT ADAMSBert Adams has been involved in the
sand world since 1993. He has started and organized more
sand contests than anyone else in the world.
Adams started his first contest in 1993 in Santa Cruz, Calif., as a charity fundraiser for several local nonprofit organizations.
Adams was the “Beach Master” for the World Championships in Harrison Hot Springs from 1995 to 2005.
In 1996, he started the Sand in the City contests, (www.sandinthecity.com) first in Portland, and expanding across the country. Sand in the City is a corporate challenge sand sculpture contest held as an nonprofit fundraiser.
Adams looks forward to the addition of local teams to the Port Angeles festival.
This year, two teams — Merrill & Ring Team and the Phoenix Dragon Martial Arts School Team — will participate in the festival.
“Any team with a little technique and some tools can make an impressive sand sculpture,” Adams says.
Coaching teams such as the Port Angeles squads in sand sculpture technique is Adams’ specialty.
“I teach about 2,000 people a year in sand sculpture,” he says.Adams is primarily a contest organizer, but he loves to carve too.Being invited to a contest he doesn’t have to organize is a great
treat for Adams.

MARK CHAPMANMark Chapman has been carving sand since the
mid-1990s and competing as a solo master since 2004.
He has worked as a sand sculptor throughout North America at Sand in the City events.
Chapman’s favorite topic is mythology. “I love the way that myths invite the sculptor to
carve the topic in a completely exaggerated way,” he says. “If it can be done, it can be over done.”
Chapman is also an accomplished ceramic sculp-tor and was accepted in July 2012 for the first time into a juried exhibition of fine art.
SUE McGREWNine years ago, after competing in a dragon
boat race for the local maritime festival, Sue McGrew of Tacoma found herself in a sand pile next to a demo sculpture playing with much younger children.
The display sculptor, Bert Adams, noticed her enthusiasm and invited her to come back the next day and learn how to compact the sand like a pro.
A year later, the summer after her high school graduation, Sue landed her first commercial job in Zeebrugge, Belgium.
She has since carved multiple times in Europe, competed in the U.S. and Canada, and been on Travel Channel’s “Sand Blasters,” all while managing to graduate in 2008 from the University of Southern California.
Among her awards are second place at the Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition in Parksville, B.C., and first place at the North American Sand Sculpting Championship in Virginia Beach, Va.
McGrew took second place in Arts in Action last year with “The Evolution of Sports.”
Her Star Wars sculpture “Luke and Leia” took second place at Arts in Action in 2010.

DELAYNE CORBETTThough born in beautiful Nelson, B.C., in 1972, Delayne Corbett was
raised all across Canada. The abundant nature and raw materials like wood, stone, ice, snow and sand guided him early onto a creative path.
Corbett began actual sculpting at the age of 19 when he was terribly bored one day.
He says his life changed the instant he picked up a hammer, a screw-driver and a piece of wood and pounded out an incense holder.
“This simple probe into subtractive art instantly captured my attention and imagination,” he explains.
A purchase of a small soapstone rock and a few rudimentary tools blossomed into a full-time passion.
“Smashing stones with a hammer and chisel gave an emotional and physical release and has allowed for personal spiritual healing and growth,” Corbett says. “This passion of mine leads me on a wild journey of learning and creation.”
After years of self taught exploration with stone and wood sculpting, Corbett joined the Sculptors Association of Alberta in 1998. With them, he discovered ice and snow carving, welding and other mediums like clay, Styrofoam and concrete.
He experienced artistic collaboration and community, and developed wonderful mentorship with other talented sculptors. Corbett enthusiastically established himself in the community by entering numerous shows and competitions, attending workshops, lectures and arts events. Eventually, he was guided to a stone-sculpting symposium in British Columbia, thus beginning the ascent of another creative mountain.
Traveling has broadened Corbett’s knowledge with new experiences and amazing artwork. “I have attended many festivals, workshops and symposiums worldwide,” he says. “I even auctioned
myself off as an assistant to several established sculptors to learn more about this craft.”Corbett started sculpting sand, balancing rocks and scrounging materials from nature and in back
alleys and garbage bins. Learning the trade of stone masonry has further broadened his abilities and potential.
Now Corbett’s sculpting career flows in seasons. In the spring and fall, he concentrates on stone. In winter he carves ice and snow, and the summer has him traveling around creating sand monuments between masonry jobs.
Corbett currently lives in Vancouver, B.C., and has a studio in his garage. “I feel that there is so much to learn, to experience and experiment with sculpture that I just might die
with a chisel in my hand,” he says.
BILL DOWBill Dow was born in
the center of Montana before the turn of the century.
“I wandered aimlessly for 40 years until I dis-covered sand sculpture while living in Seattle in 1991,” Dow explains.
“Our team entered two contests that year: Parksville (‘Tide’s out!) and Harrison Hot Springs (World Champi-onship). We won the latter!”
Dow turned “pro” in 1996 while living in Utah and hasn’t looked back.
“I’ve since travelled far and wide, and have made many sand friends in many countries,” Dow says.
“I love the sand as an artistic medium — except when it doesn’t do what I want!”
Dow says he still loves sand and doesn’t plan to quit competing anytime soon.

Chalk art returns to festivalIAN MORRIS
Ian Morris, a sidewalk artist from Victoria, B.C., returns to Arts in Action to create another amazing 3D “anamorphic chalk art” illustration.
This type of art is created on pavement and uses angles and perspective to create the illusion of three dimensions. The art can appear amazingly realistic and people often pose with the image as if they are interacting with the scene.
In 2009, Morris created an image of an orca whale leaping from the water. Onlookers captured photos of friends and family “balancing” on the orca’s nose.
Last year, he depicted a different perspective — looking below the sidewalk and into the ground.
The “underground” perspective appeared so realis-tic that people walked around the image to avoid falling in the water below.
In sticking with the 2012 “Hollywood” festival theme, Morris will set up shop outside Captain T’s, 114 E. Front St., to create a movie reel that seems as though it is unwinding before your eyes.
Morris is sponsored by Captain T’s, which is located in the former Elwha Theater, making it the perfect location for a Hollywood-themed chalk masterpiece.

Also on Saturday, the guitar and vocal duo of Fret Noir will feature music from their newly released CD “Bittersweet.” Saturday’s lineup includes All About Me providing “rock and roll with heart and soul” and the driving blues guitar and harp sounds of the Cruzin’ Bluzers. On Sunday, July 29, there will be an afternoon reunion of the SoulShakers, who will bring their toe-tapping blues back to the stage for a special performance.
Enjoy the music throughout the day as you look at the sand sculptures, grab a snack and browse through the many vendor booths.
