As it is time for the second leg of our British Isles trilogy, we venture now to Scotland! From Edinburgh to Glasgow, we investigate the history, geography, and culture of this ancient and lovely land, discovering the spirit of the Scottish people.

Upon our arrival in Edinburgh we do a panoramic tour in the morning that takes in the Royal Mile, Princes Street Gardens, and Calton Hill, then visit the National Museum of Scotland in the afternoon. Our second day in the city takes us to Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and Real Mary King’s Close, a warren of hidden 17th century streets beneath the Royal Mile. On our final day in Edinburgh, we visit the graceful ruins of

12th century Dryburgh Abbey and the elegant 15th century ruins of Melrose Abbey.

Departing Edinburgh, we head north to Perth. Stopping in St Andrews, we visit St Andrews

Cathedral and St Andrews Castle, and then make our way to magnificent Scone Palace, once the crowning place of the kings of Scots. In Perth, we visit Blair Castle and the romantic Dunkeld Cathedral on the River Tay.

Then we’re off to Aberdeen, along the way visiting Crathes Castle, one of the most beautiful and well- preserved castles in all of Scotland. In Aberdeen, we visit the award-winning Maritime Museum and

the following day we move on to Inverness, stopping en route to visit the 14th century Cawdor Castle and the Clava Cairns, a 4,000-year-old cemetery complex from the Bronze Age. Our last stop of the day is the Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre where, in 1746, the Jacobite and British armies dramatically changed the course of Scotland’s history.

We next visit the historic Glenmorangie Distillery by the shores of Dornoch Firth and the most northerly of Scotland’s great houses, Dunrobin Castle, before arriving in Thurso, our gateway to the Orkney Islands. On our tenth day in Scotland, we take a ferry to visit the Ring of Brodgar, one of the most spectacular prehistoric monuments in the British Isles; Skara Brae and Skaill House, the best- preserved prehistoric houses in Western Europe; and Maeshowe, a superb example of Neolithic architecture. On the islands, we also visit St Magnus Cathedral. Its construction began in 1137, and the cathedral is one of the finest ecclesiastical buildings in all of Scotland.

From Thurso, we take the spectacular scenic route down Scotland’s west coast to Ullapool, the next day crossing the central highlands for a cruise on Loch Ness and a visit to the dramatically located Urquhart Castle before arriving in Fort William.

From Fort William, we explore the tradition-rich and scenic Isle of Skye before moving on to Oban, the base from which we visit the Isle of Mull and Iona Abbey and Nunnery, one of Scotland’s most historic and sacred sites.

Our last stop is Glasgow, where we visit Inveraray Jail, the Scottish Wool Centre, the Cathedral of St Mungo, and the St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art.
