ART SHAY EXHIBIT

Morrison Hotel Gallery in SoHo presented acclaimed photojournalist Art Shay's first ever New York City exhibit, and his only East Coast exhibit of 2014. He's photographed fresh and iconic images of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., the Rat Pack, Elizabeth Taylor, Muhammad Ali, and Marlon Brando, among many, many others. Shay says, "A great picture is the autobiography of a moment."

The School of American Ballet’s 2014 Winter Ball, in celebration of SAB’s 80th Anniversary, took place at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on Monday, March 3, and raised more than $1.2 million for scholarships and school programs. Sponsored by legendary French jeweler Maison, Van Cleef & Arpels for the seventh consecutive year, the evening began with cocktails at 7 PM and dinner at 8 PM, followed by a student performance choreographed specially for the occasion, and The Encore dessert and dancing, sponsored by fifth-generation luxury house, J. Mendel. The proceeds from this event enable SAB to distribute $1.9 million annually in student scholarships as well as support the School’s renowned faculty and state-of-the-art facilities at Lincoln Center.

Winners CircleThe Southampton Cultural Center

presents “Winners Circle,” the third annual juried awards exhibition starting Tuesday and running through April 18. An opening reception will

take place on March 22 from 5 to 7 PM at the Levitas Center for the Arts at Southampton Cultural Center. Artists include Susan Newmark, Christina Stow, and Charles Yoder. Exhibit Juror is Helen Harrison, Director, Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center. The show is curated by Arlene Bujese.

East Hampton from Friday through April 6, selected works by Caio Fonseca, Christine Hiebert, Sharon Horvath, Robert Jakob, Mel Kendrick, Diane Mayo, Alan Sheilds, and Donald Sultan. The gallery is also pleased to introduce new sculpture by New York artist Adrian Nivola, whose intricate constructions offer a spirited homage to the flying machine. His sculptures in wire, linen, paper and found elements will be featured in a forthcoming one-person exhibition.

This four week group installation includes paintings, drawings, sculpture and printed editions highlighting the rich potential each artist has mined from his or her inventive use of materials.

Winterfest, a new photography exhibit called “Music in Images” opens Friday at the Alex Ferrone Photography Gallery in Cutchogue. Juried by noted curator Esperanza León of Solar Contemporary, music is the theme for this exhibit which features photographic works depic t ing music ians, venues, performances, and instruments from twenty-one regional photographers. The show runs through March 21.

In November 2010, a tragic tractor accident took the life of young farmer Joshua Levine at Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett. The Joshua Levine Memorial Foundation (JLMF) www.joshualevinefoundation.org was founded shortly after Josh’s death in 2011 to identify and support charitable programs which promote good farming practices, healthy eating, education and a sustainable environment.

The Josh Levine Memorial Annual Dinner celebrates the efforts made by community partners to reverse trends which have made families ill with diet related diseases and obese through unhealthy eating practices. James Taylor was a somewhat spoiled kid growing up in Chapel Hill, NC. His father was a respected surgeon at the UNC School of Medicine and eventually became president and his mother studied opera singing.

The family, originally from Massachuset ts , summered in Martha’s Vineyard and it is there James Taylor called home.

As a youngster he played cello, taught himself guitar, and dabbled on his sister’s piano. While attending prep school he met Danny Kortchmar, a gifted guitarist, and the pair teamed up, playing coffeehouses and writing. Taylor penned his first song when he was 14.

Despite his wealth and talent, Taylor, a sensitive kid, began suffering bouts of depression and by the time he was a senior in high school checked into Mclean Hospital as a psychiatric patient. He stayed for nine months and left to form a rock band with Kortchmar, the Flying Machine.

The band was doing well and playing regular gigs in Manhattan, but Taylor soon found himself in the throes of a heroin addiction and moved to London in 1967 in an unsuccessful attempt to recover. During that time he impressed Paul McCartney, who signed him to the Beatles’ Apple label, and recorded “Carolina On My Mind.”

music sweeping the country. His album, Sweet Baby James, was an immediate smash fueled by the song “Fire and Rain,” about a girlfriend (Suzanne Schner) who killed herself while he was a patient.

A high profile marriage to Carly Simon faltered, but Taylor continued to record hit albums, as did his sister Kate and brother Livingston, though neither achieved the commercial success James did. He had two children with Simon, Ben and Sally, both of whom are musicians. Taylor is a five-time Grammy winner, a member of the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, and holds an Honorary Masters Degree from the Berklee College of Music. He is currently married to his third wife, Kim Smedvig. They have two sons, the twins Rufus and Henry.

12 Years A Slave The Oscar winner for best movie has been criticized for being overly violent and it’s a valid point – some things are better left to the imagination. The cast is excellent, though, and the story riveting. Let’s face it; it’s terribly overwrought.

Three Days To Kill (PG-13) This is your basic wintertime box office fodder and a nice paycheck for the always reliable Kevin Costner. He plays (yes) an international spy whose last assignment is to hunt down and kill (yes) the world’s most ruthless terrorist while coping with a (wait for it . . . ) rebellious teenaged daughter he hasn’t seen in years. That would be Hailee Steinfeld of True Grit fame.
