Shenkman Arts Centre offers school groups a wide selection of workshops tailored to the Ontario Arts Curriculum and presented by professional arts instructors. Choose from half (two 1.5-hr. workshops) or full days (three 1.5-hr. workshops) of learning and fun. All of the workshops can be adapted to suit a specific age group.

Workshop are offered by the City of Ottawa and the Resident Arts Partners.

Before you arriveMany of the activities are messy and some require students to be in loose clothing for unrestricted movement. Please dress appropriately.

Bookings• Bookings must be made at least one (1) month prior to the date of visit.

• Workshops are 1.5 hours in length.

• Minimum workshop size is 15 students. Groups with fewer than 15 students will be charged the minimum group size.

• Groups arriving with less than the agreed-upon number of students will be charged for the original number of students, not the number of students who arrive.

• There is no charge for the required number of adult supervisors (see Group Supervision for details).

• A non-refundable deposit of 20% of the estimated total fee is due upon booking. Confirmation of booking will proceed only upon receipt of deposit. The balance is due the day of your visit. Please mail deposit cheque (made out to City of Ottawa) to:

CancellationsIf you cancel your visit within 10 business days of the date of your visit, the 20% deposit will be withheld. Schools will not be charged for cancelling a reservation due to cessation of bus service due to inclem-ent weather. Attempts will be made to reschedule your visit in the same programming year.

HoursSchool visits are offered Monday to Friday between 9 am and 4 pm. It is strongly advised that groups arrive on site 15 minutes before the start of activities.

We offer the following options:

PLAN YOUR VISITFoodIndoor and outdoor spaces are available for lunches. Participants must provide their own lunches and snacks. There are various restaurants and delivery services in the area if required. There are drink and snack vending machines on site.

Coat CheckDepending on events, coats, boots and bags may be left in either the coat check or one of the studio spaces.

Group SizeWe require a minimum of 15 students per activity, with a maximum of 30 per activity.

Group SupervisionAdult supervisors are encouraged to assist in overseeing the comport-ment of students during the delivery of programs. A ratio of one adult for every ten students is required. All adult supervisors are admitted at no charge.

AccessibilityAll programming spaces are fully accessible. If your group has any special needs, please mention them when making your booking.

ParkingAmple free parking is available on site for buses and adult supervisors. It is preferred that the students are dropped off at the north door, facing Highway 174.

Dance 1Hip Hop Urban Dance: Explore Forms and Cultural Contexts, Body Awareness, Creating and Presenting

Students will learn some basic hip hop movements that will be put together to create a simple dance routine.

Curriculum Links: Dance: Grades 1 to 3

Duration: 90 minutes

Pottery 1Pinch Pot Animals: Creating and Presenting

Students will have the opportunity to create various geometric and organic shapes using some of the basic ceramic hand building techniques (i.e. pinch pots to create a sphere). Use of different tools to create textures.

Pottery 2Coiled Cups : Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

Students will have the opportunity to create various geometric and organic shapes using some of the basic handbuilding techniques used in ceramics with the intent of making a functional mug (i.e. coils to create a cylinder).

Pottery 3Picture frames : Creating and Presenting, Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

Work with two dimensional geo-metric and organic shapes using the slab building technique. The students will explore different textures through the use of an assortment found objects.

Theatre 1Puppets: Creating and Presenting

Engage in dramatic play and role play, using puppets with a focus on exploring a variety of sources from diverse communities, times, and places.

Demonstrate an understanding of the element of character by pretending to be someone or something else; adopting thoughts, feelings, and gestures relevant to the role being played.

Theatre 3Theatre Games: Creating and Presenting, Reflecting, Responding, and Analyzing, Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

Express feelings and ideas about a drama experience or performance that had the same problem or felt the same way as this character, making personal connections to the characters and themes in the story.




Visual Arts 1 Fun in Learning Fundamental Elements of Art : Creating and Presenting

Explore the different forms of lines making; curved, spiral and broken lines, and how they can be used in drawing. Before starting to paint, an introduction to the basic colour wheel (primary and secondary colours) will be made. The activity will culminate with a relief painting on plaster. Students will have the chance to use their creativity and new knowledge of line to scratch their image into a plaster base and paint it.

Visual Arts 2Sculpture: An Introduction to the Third Dimension - Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

This hands-on dynamic session will introduce the fun of creating and learning how to work in 3D. Elements of size, shape and bal-ance, learning about the materials and how they are used in creating internal structure and exterior details will be explored as the students create a sculpture out of paper and cardboard that will be finished in plaster bandage. (This session can be flexible in the theme of the sculp-tures, birds, underwater creatures, insects, etc.)




Visual Arts 3Silkscreen Printing: An Exploration of Design and Pattern - Reflecting, Responding, and Analyzing

With the use of paper and pencil, students will have the chance to learn about shape and pattern. They will learn about the ideas behind printing and have a demonstration of silk-screening. They will then have the opportunity to try their hand at it with their own original design. Colour and contrast, seeing how the image is altered when print-ing on different coloured paper or changing the colour of the ink will be explored.

Using slabs, children will look at ways of creating symmetrical or asymmetrical three dimensional objects focusing on the negative spaces, volume and shadows created by these shapes (ex: cube vs star shape) They will also experiment with textures.

Using slabs and other handbuilding techniques, students will create a mask, representative of a culture and or geographic area of their choice.

Using various handbuilding tech-niques, students will get the op-portunity to create the quintessential functional pottery object – a cup (mug, teacup).




Theatre 1Junior Shakespeare: Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

Engage actively in drama explora-tion and role play, by imagining how people in medieval society behaved. Explore drama structures, key ideas, and pivotal moments in your own stories and stories from diverse communities, times, and places.

Students communicate thoughts, feelings, and ideas to a specific audience, using audio, visual, and/or technological aids to enhance their drama work.

Visual Arts 1 Portrait Drawing-An Exploration into the Self-Portrait: Creating and Presenting

This session will teach the funda-mentals of proportions and line in drawing a face. Students will be introduced to working with different hardness of pencils, shading and using conté. Students will then create a life size self-portrait using small hand held mirrors.

Visual Arts 2 Mandalas - Balance and Colour with Sand: Reflecting, Responding, and Analyzing

This unique session will explore the importance of line, pattern making and colour in art and design. The students will look at the colour value and complementary colours. They will work in pencil and pastel, and then do a mandala using coloured sand.




Visual Arts 3 Landscape Painting and Canada’s Group of Seven: Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

This session will introduce the Group of Seven and their impor-tance in Canadian art history. Looking at the works, the students will learn about the structure and balance of a landscape painting, foreground, background and horizon line and basic principals of perspective. How colours influence the mood of a painting will also be discussed. The students will create their own landscape using acrylics on a canvas board.

In this project, students will use several different techniques in order to create a vase. Emphasis will be on shape and form, learning to create a harmonious object.




Pottery 2Busts: Creating and Presenting, Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

Students will be shown how to create a small bust or figurine emphasizing certain features and adding head gear for bust along with outerwear for figurine. Looking at ways of exaggerating characteristics in order to create movement and gesture in the figure.

Engage actively in drama explora-tion and role play, with a focus on examining multiple perspectives related to current issues, themes, and relationships from a wide variety of sources and diverse communities.

Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of drama by selecting and combining several elements and technologies to signal to the

audience when an actor’s speech represents the character’s private, inner thoughts.

Visual Arts 1The Balance of the Human Form: Creating and Presenting

This session is a figurative sculpture experience. Students will learn about the proportion of the human figure both static and in motion and how it finds balance. Students will

learn the parts of a sculpture. They will create and learn the function of interior armature by using wire, and then use wax to sculpt the details of the figure. The students will be encouraged to think of the figure in motion (eg. gymnast, dancer or athlete).

Visual Arts 2Silkscreen Printing - The Influence of Andy Warhol and Pop Culture: Reflecting, Responding, and Analyzing

This fun and dynamic session will explore the world of printmaking and design and how it is found around us in our everyday life. The students will create their own design and have the chance to silkscreen it. Colour and contrast, seeing how the image is altered when printing on different coloured paper or changing the colour of the ink will be explored.




Visual Arts 3Fall Into the World of Impressionism with Renoir, Van Gogh and Monet : Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

The students will be introduced to some of the best-known artists of our time and learn what Impressionism is and why it is significant. Based on a still life, the students will have the chance to use their creativity along with what they have learned to do an Impressionist style painting. The students will use acrylic paint and will learn to use both paintbrush and palette knife. They will also review the colour wheel primary, secondary, and complementary colours.
