U.P. Artists at ArtPrize? “You betcha!”
U.P. Pavilion @ DeVos Place
Thanks for responding to our survey regarding ArtPrize 2016. We have some good news for you!
We are happy to announce DeVos Place as the supporting ArtPrize venue and home of the U.P. Pavilion 2016.
Please read and share the following from Bonifas Arts Center and DeVos Place. Plan on participating in ArtPrize 2016 and helping us establish the U.P. Pavilion! Be alert to more information from your U.P. arts organizations, and in the meantime… Art On!
DeVos Place is located in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids with a riverfront setting that is the perfect backdrop for all types of art. The venue has reserved over 500 linear feet of space, sympathetic to many mediums of art. We are seeking U.P. artists whose work celebrates culture, heritage, and diversity of form, life and tradition. Learn more at https://devosplace.org.
“We look forward to creating this new Pavilion focusing on Michigan artists, specifically artists from the Upper Peninsula. DeVos Place will serve as a catalyst, as a vital space to convene, think, witness, ponder, and/or inspire U.P. Artists to be engaged in art at the U.P. Pavilion for ArtPrize 2016.” – Eddie T.L. Tadlock, Lead Artistic Curator for DeVos Place
“ArtPrize is the perfect platform to connect the world to the artists who reside in the ‘land above the Bridge.’ The Upper Peninsula contains 29% of the land area of Michigan but just 3% of its total population. It is with anticipation and excitement that the 3%, many whom are artists, will have a spotlight on their creativity during ArtPrize 2016 at the U.P. Pavilion at DeVos Place.” – Eddie T.L. Tadlock, Lead Artistic Curator for DeVos Place

U.P. art gets ArtPrize showcase February 23, 2016 By Jordan Beck - Staff Writer, Daily Press
ESCANABA - A newly-announced partnership between the Bonifas Arts Center (BAC) and Grand Rapids convention center DeVos Place will give the region's creators greater exposure through the establishment of an ArtPrize pavilion for U.P. artists. In a press conference held at the BAC Monday morning, Executive and Gallery Director Pasqua Warstler and Business Director Sue Roll spoke about this partnership and what it will mean for artists in the area.
ArtPrize is an annual competition in downtown Grand Rapids which showcases works by artists from all over the world. All forms of art are eligible for the competition, which offers two grand prizes of $200,000 each. An early entry deadline of April 22 is in place for artists wishing to have their work shown at the U.P. Pavilion.
The pavilion, which will be located in DeVos Place and span more than 500 linear feet, will showcase roughly 30 to 50 works by U.P. artists during this year's ArtPrize competition.
"It should be really helpful for U.P. artists," Roll said.
In addition to giving exposure to U.P. artists, Warstler said the U.P. Pavilion could create interest in the region itself among ArtPrize attendees.
"We want people to see the U.P. as a destination," she said.
To encourage this interest, Warstler said the BAC is working with the Upper Peninsula Travel and Recre-ation Association (UPTRA) to promote the Upper Peninsula during ArtPrize.
"They feel strongly about including arts and culture in the (tourism) industry," she said.
Warstler said their collaboration could include the development of a map of U.P. cultural hotspots to give to pavilion visitors and the production of a video on artists in the area, among other initiatives.
In a statement quoted by the BAC in a press release, Lead Artistic Curator for DeVos Place Eddie T.L. Tadlock addressed the artists whose work will eventually be featured in the U.P. Pavilion."We are part of that daring venture that will offer all of the useful and necessary tools for the perfect gathering of U.P. artists and their work," he stated. "It is our desire that your ArtPrize experience at DeVos Place is brought to you full of fun, creativity, a little tension, honest conversation and a modicum of humor."
This year's ArtPrize competition will be held in downtown Grand Rapids from Sept. 21 to Oct. 9. To register for ArtPrize, or to learn more about the competition, visit their Web site at www.artprize.org.

PAST NEWS COVERAGEArtPrize venue will showcase this group of Michigan artistsFebruary 27, 2016 by Jim Harger, Mlive
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Artists from Michigan's Upper Peninsula will have their own display area inside the DeVos Place Convention Center at this year's ArtPrize competition.
The Grand Gallery and skywalk at ArtPrize have become some of the most popular venues in ArtPrize, routinely hosting dozens of the competition's top 100 entries and finalists, said Eddie Tadlock, assistant general manager of DeVos Place.
DeVos Place and the Bonifas Art Center in Escanaba recently agreed to set aside part of the convention center for a grouping of artists from the Upper Peninsula. This year's ArtPrize competition will run from Sept. 21 through Oct. 9.
Tadlock said they came up with the idea after recently hosting an exhibit by photographers from the Upper Peninsula.
"They have kind of an artists' colony up there," said Tadlock, who said he expects to choose between 20 and 30 pieces for the U.P. pavilion. Overall, DeVos Place probably will display about 100 entries, he said.
Tadlock said he expects to see more than depictions of elk, forests and lighthouses.
"Based on the art work I've seen from artists up there, I expect a variety of different things, not just landscapes and lighthouse and the usual suspects," Tadlock said. "The artists I've hosted in the past do phenomenal work."
"The quality of their work has been amazing. There's a really cool art culture up in the U.P."
Pasqua Warstler, artistic director of the Bonifas Arts Center, said Tadlock's invitation is likely to attract interest from more than 200 artists in the Upper Peninsula. She has been meeting with artists and galleries throughout the region to drum up interest in participating.
The Upper Peninsula has a vibrant art scene that attracts artists from throughout the country for its natural beauty and isolation, Warstler said. But the region's vastness of the region also makes it difficult to gain recognition.
"ArtPrize is a great opportunity for those artists to be seen and get connected to others," said Warstler, who first got to know Tadlock when she displayed a sculpture in ArtPrize I.
While ArtPrize was intended to shake up the conversation in the world of art, it also has shaken up the conversation on the role of art in the U.P.'s tourism industry, she said.
In future years, Tadlock said DeVos Place may showcase artists from other regions of Michigan, such as the Lakeshore or Southeast Michigan.

ESCANABA - More than 60 artists from across the Upper Peninsula have applied to be a part of the DeVos Place U.P. Pavilion at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids this year.
Pasqua Warstler, executive and gallery director at the Bonifas Arts Center in Escanaba, says the response far exceeded what they hoped to accomplish in the first year with a U.P. venue at ArtPrize, according to www.bonifasarts.org.
"It's great to see that artists in the Upper Peninsula have such an interest to show their work in an international setting while representing the U.P.," Warslter said.
Approximately 20 artists will be selected to be displayed at the U.P. Pavilion at DeVos Place. However, there are still steps that those who signed up for ArtPrize must complete. All U.P. artists who have submitted to ArtPrize must copy the Bonifas Arts Center in an email at [email protected] and complete the registration process by selecting their venue, DeVos Place. They may select their venue by returning to the ArtPrze website at www.artprize.org and logging in.
DeVos Place plans to jury next week. Artists need to finish selecting their venue as soon as possible to be considered for the U.P. Pavilion.

ARTIST QUOTES
Eric Munch | Calumet, MI | U.P. Pavillion"My ArtPrize entry is a photograph of an ice volcano on the shore of Lake Superior at McLain State Park. Water splashed up through the opening in it, spraying me and my camera with water, which almost immediately froze.
The colors of the spectrum are visible in the streaks of rotating ice which flew at the camera. ArtPrize was on my radar the last few years, and when I heard about the UP Pavilion at DeVos Place, I got the incentive to try it. I
am really excited to be part of it."
Dale Wedig | Marquette, MI | U.P. Pavillion“Submitting work for a juried competition is always an interesting and
curious adventure. Rejection is not the end of the world. Acceptance pro-vides the chance to introduce your work to a new audience. For me, it’s
about seeking diverse opportunities to exhibit works of art that were made with the intent of people viewing them. ArtPrize is a top shelf event…the
ultimate hunt….a great challenge.”

Peg Sandin | Ironwood, MI | U.P. Pavillion“Living on Lake Superior is what inspires many of my watercolors. As my
paintings become more abstract, the lakes and shorelines provide me with subjects that sing to me and stimulate all my senses.”
Martha Fieber | Manistique, MI | U.P. Pavillion“I submitted my work for consideration for the Artprize UP Pavillion at the Devos
Place to support and promote the arts in Michigan's Upper Penninsula. I have always considered Artprize as a venue, but logistics conflicted with my art fair schedule. Now the Bonifas has made it possible for me to enter and I am very
appreciative of that opportunity.”

Phyllis Carlson | Quinnesec, MI | U.P. Pavillion“A friend, who I consider a professional photographer, encouraged me to enter "Window to the Soul" in ArtPrize. Since I've always seen ArtPrize as a downstate competition for professionals only, I was reluctant to try. Thanks to the William Bonifas Art Center's promotion of the U.P. Pavilion I found myself wanting to be included. I am honored to have had my photograph chosen for the U.P. Pavilion
and given the opportunity to represent the Upper Peninsula.”
Mara Manning | Escanaba, MI | U.P. Pavillion“I was so excited to have the opportunity to submit work for the 2016 ArtPriize competition. I am looking forward to representing the Upper Peninsula of MI as one of its newest permanent residents! Thank you Bonifas Arts Center and the
DeVos space for sponsoring the new UP Pavilion. ”

Cindy Wedig | Marquette, MI | U.P. Pavillion“Having focused on my vocation as wife and mother my ceramics has always been secondary. However, when my last child left home this year and I began
the 50th year of my life I was determined to challenge myself by entering more art shows with the goal of getting accepted into a national show. So, when this opportunity presented itself I simply closed my eyes and jumped! What a fantastic chance at growth and experience. I am so grateful to have
been accepted into this truly unique showing and venue. I have always believed art to be a communal process and ArtPrize truly embodies human
engagement. I must also say how proud and humbled I am to be accompanied by my fellow UP artists who are truly gifted in so many different
mediums and genres.”
Mary Penet | Gladstone, MI | U.P. Pavillion“I chose to enter ArtPrize because it was a challenge to see if a piece of work
created of recycled materials would hold merit in the world of high art. Lo and behold, much to my surprise, my piece was chosen for the DeVos Place U.P. Artist
Pavilion. I feel extremely fortunate to be included in such a grand selection of extremely wonderful artists!”

Jim Rutledge | Engadine, MI | U.P. Pavillion“It's an honor and a privilege to represent the U.P. in Art Prize 2016. I am
excited for the opportunity. The U.P. has long been a talent rich group when it comes to the arts. As a woodturner I represent a group of extremely talented
and diverse woodturners. My hope is to bring more of them to Art Prize.”
Carol Irving | Escanaba, MI | U.P. Pavillion “Black & White is a series of Handwoven Wall Hangings, designed and woven in 2015. The piece is also known as "So Much Struggle Series", due to its complexity and time it took to design and weave this piece. With this triptych of hangings, my goal was to explore a simple design and then push that design in its complexity to
something new and different.I hope to share my love of design, fiber and weaving with those who view my work
as part of the U.P. Pavilion at ArtPrize 2016.”
