Title of Certificate:

Artist Diploma

Type of Certificate: Professional Certificate, offered in residence

Department: Department of Music

Program Coordinator: Ernest Salem

Proposers: Ernest Salem Robert Watson Håkan Rosengren Laura Lohman Mark Goodrich Jean Ferrandis

Rationale The Artist Diploma is a two-year certificate program offering the exceptionally talented, emerging professional musician practical instruction and experience in musical performance at the post-baccalaureate level. Admission is based largely on performance ability, as assessed through rigorous live auditions (see criteria for admission). Artist Diploma and similar performance certificate programs are offered at universities nationwide. CSUF is well-positioned to develop this certificate because relatively few music certificates of this kind are currently offered in Southern California (e.g., those offered by USC, University of Redlands, San Diego State University, and The Colburn School). The Department of Music is proposing this certificate program for several reasons:

1. Adding the Artist Diploma program as a complement to our existing undergraduate and graduate degrees will allow our department to better meet the needs of young musicians seeking to become professional performers. The flexible nature of the Artist Diploma curriculum will enable exceptionally talented students with varied backgrounds and interests to construct study plans that meet their unique needs as they complete their training to embark on careers as professional performers.

2. As a flexible, professionally oriented post-baccalaureate program, the Artist Diploma will attract more highly talented students. As a result, it will raise the quality of the educational experiences of both undergraduate and graduate students in our many courses that feature collaborative learning environments, including major performing ensembles, chamber music ensembles, performance workshops, and conducting and improvisation courses. In these learning environments, Artist Diploma students will also provide leadership and serve as strong role models for other students.

3. The Artist Diploma will assist in retaining and recruiting highly qualified faculty. Faculty members’ experiences will be enriched as they work with exceptionally talented

students whose primary goal is to focus on preparation for a professional career in performance. For this reason, the Artist Diploma will not only make broader use of the strengths of our existing faculty members, but will also help our department recruit highly qualified new faculty members.

These benefits enumerated above support the university’s Mission and Goals, as well as the Integrated Strategic Plan. Purpose and Intended Student Pool The Artist Diploma (AD) is for students who have completed either an undergraduate or graduate degree in music and is designed for the exceptionally talented musician who aspires to, and demonstrates potential for, professional involvement in performance. Instrumentalists (including jazz), pianists, singers, and conductors may apply for admission to the program, which is granted only after passing a rigorous live audition (see audition and academic criteria below). As a 2-year, focused and intensive study program in the art of performance, the AD is both rigorous and practical. Thus, the curricular emphasis of the AD is on performance skills gained through individual lessons, master class settings, solo performances, chamber music or other collaborative experiences, and large ensembles. Additional focus will be on the study of the literature for the student’s primary performance medium, independent study, career development, career growth, and career sustaining skills. As performing musicians, the latter category includes the study of somatic (body) awareness and kinesthetic (movement) awareness for the promotion of healthful performance, and the avoidance of performance-induced injury. The purpose of the AD program is to produce musicians capable of entering and sustaining careers in the work force as professional musicians. Student Learning Goals Professional musicians regularly demonstrate virtuosity in aural skills (listening), kinesthetic skills (movement), and interpretive skills, and effectiveness in logistical (or time management/practice) skills. Thus, the CSUF AD recipient (graduate) will:

Demonstrate musical performance that is persuasive, confident, and stylistically sensitive Demonstrate mastery of the core skills of tone production, tonal variety, breathing and

intonation (as appropriate to the performance medium) Increase technical prowess through the mastery of virtuosic repertoire, and a technique

that is both fluid and kinesthetically efficient Use analytical and critical thinking to solve issues related to acquiring performance

readiness efficiently through practice and rehearsal strategies Recognize a variety of interpretive points of view, and demonstrate historically informed

stylistic performance and performance practice appropriate to the literature being performed

Apply analytical and theoretical concepts in the preparation and interpretation of musical works

Build an expanded repertoire of mastered works that is taken from both the standard and unusual literature for the performance medium

The assessment of student progress is made through evaluation of performance in master classes or workshops, exams, semester-ending jury exams, and through the evaluation of performance projects (recitals or concerts). Curriculum Design The AD curriculum focuses on performance instruction (private applied lessons and performance courses), in the manner of traditional teaching in music, yet without requiring instruction in the theoretical topics of music history, harmony, and literature. Students take existing courses; no new courses are introduced for this certificate. The curriculum has been designed with a thorough understanding of similar certificates around the country, and is patterned after two such programs at USC (i.e., USC’s Artist’s Diploma and Graduate Certificate in Music Performance). 2-year (4-semester) program containing 24 units minimum Required units (13 units):

Applied lessons on instrument/voice/conducting: 6 units from Mus 591 or 592 Ensembles (orchestra, wind ensemble, opera, chamber music, etc.): 4 units from Mus 406A-W, 407C-Y, 408B-X Recital: 3 units from Mus 597 (1+2)

The above-required units thus present a “core curriculum” for all students in the program. Elective units, by advisement (11 units, to make 24 total units):

Ensembles: Mus 406, 407, 408 Independent study: 599 Other possible electives (by advisement, N.B. 500 level seminar courses will require a 550 TOEFL score): History/Theory: Mus 418, 419, 420, 422 Literature: Mus 450-459, 462 Improvisation: Mus 464 Pedagogy courses: Mus 465S, 465V, 466, 467, 468, 469, 477, 484, 567, 568 Graduate Seminars: Mus 524, 552, 553, 554, 555, 556, 570G, 570P, 570V

The emphasis even in the choice of elective units would remain on performance, yet the choice of elective units provides the vehicle to design an individual program for each student, dependent upon area of expertise (violin, voice, piano, etc.). Entrance into academic courses would be by consent of instructor (to ensure student meets prerequisites). For example, a typical study plan for a violin student would likely contain the following courses in the first semester:

Applied violin lessons (Mus 592): 2 units Orchestra (Mus 406A): 1 unit

Chamber Music (Mus 408S): 1 unit String Studies (Mus 465S): 1 unit Independent Study (Mus 599): 1 unit

See attached Study Plan. Cost Analysis. Instructors for the AD would be those in the current CSUF full and part time faculty. It is expected that initially we anticipate a cohort of 7 students to be admitted into the AD. Please see New Program Cost Analysis Form for projected cost to the department. Criteria for Admission. Students must have:

1. A baccalaureate music degree from a domestic accredited college or university, or equivalent if foreign student (equivalency to be determined by admissions and records).

2. A minimum 2.5 G.P.A. in the last 60 units attempted. 3. A minimum TOEFL score of 500 (550 required for students enrolling in 500 level

graduate seminars). 4. A high level of musical performance ability as assessed through a live audition held

before the AD Auditioning Committee which would be comprised of area coordinators and other appropriate music faculty (Students living at least 500 miles away for whom travel to CSUF would be costly, may submit a DVD as a preliminary assessment of their performance; students successfully passing the preliminary assessment must still perform a live audition after they arrive). The AD is designed for exceptionally accomplished students with great potential for success in a career in music performance. Thus it is expected that the student would pass a higher standard of performance in their audition than that of an incoming master’s student applying to the Master of Music program.
