What Are Articles?

Articles are words that are used to clarify if a noun is specific or not specific. They are used before nouns or adjectives.

Example: There is a park in our colony.

Types of ArticlesThere are three Articles:A- We use the article a before words that

begin with a consonant sound.An- We use the article an instead of a

before words that begin with a vowel.Example: There is a park in front of my

house.

Some words may begin with a vowel but may have a consonant sound. In such cases we use a before the word. In these cases, the pronunciation of u is yu and y is a consonant.

Example: 1. This is a unique opportunity for you to travel.

2. The soldier was given a uniform.

Some words may begin with a consonant but may have a vowel sound.

Example: An hourglass is a glass container with sand used to measure time.(here, h is silent, so the word hourglass begins with the vowel sound of a.

Definite & Indefinite ArticlesA and an are called Indefinite Articles.The is called the Definite Article.When we talk about something for the first

time we use an indefinite article. If we talk about it again , we use the.

Example: Aman is going with his parents on a trip around the world. They have to pay in US dollar for the trip.

The is also used when we wish to use a noun to represent a whole class.

Example : The leopard can climb trees very well. The cow is a useful animal.

We do not use the when we talk of things in general (all trees or all animals)

We do not use the before proper nouns unless the noun is the name of something unique like the Taj Mahal, the Grand Trunk Road.

 Mountain ranges – the Himalayas, the AndesOceans and seas - the Pacific ocean, the Caspian
