The Appleton Museum wraps up its yearlong 25th anniversary celebration with five exciting exhibitions featuring the world premiere of rare Spanish artifacts and a collection of artwork by children’s book illustrators inspired by Maurice Sendak. Other activities include the Appleton’s birthday party on Dec. 16, a variety of musical programs and much more.

Opening in the Balcony Gallery on Sept. 8 is Pure Photography: Pictorial and Modern Photographs from the Syracuse University Art Collection. Featured are 30 works of photography by some of the best photographers starting in the early 1900s including Berenice Abbott, Imogen Cunningham, Gordon Parks and Edward Weston. Among the iconic images in the show is Alfred Stieglitz’s famous The Steerage from 1907.

FLORAda and Flowing Waters: The Art of Mark Messersmith, Margaret Ross Tolbert and Anna Tomczak opens on Sept. 16 and represents a lush and beautiful portrait of natural Florida as interpreted by three of the state’s most prominent artists. Messersmith’s opulent, hyper-colorful paintings of Florida’s tropical flora and fauna come together with Ross Tolbert’s abstract expressionist interpretations of our freshwater springs and Tomczak’s nostalgic large-format photographic prints of antiques and native plants.

One of this fall’s highlights is the Sept. 22 unveiling of New World Treasures: Artifacts from Hernando De Soto’s Florida Expedition. This exhibition is the first public display of a collection of rare early 16th century Spanish artifacts recently discovered in Marion County. The artifacts are from De Soto’s journey through the Ocala area in August 1539 and include delicate blue glass Murano beads from Italy, pieces of chain mail from Spanish armor and the largest cache of medieval coins found to date on the American mainland. The display will be at the Appleton through late 2013 in conjunction with the statewide Viva Florida 500 anniversary celebration.

The Nature of Things: The Art of Edward C. Smith opens in the Balcony gallery on Nov. 3. Smith’s large-scale oil paintings depict wildlife’s struggle to survive as it clashes with the modern world and technology. This exhibition is followed on Nov. 18 by Sendak & Co.: Children’s Book Illustrations Since “Where The Wild Things Are.” Presented are original drawings by 34 of some of the best known names in children’s book illustration such as Chris Van Allsburg, Chris Raschka, Leo and Diane Dillon, Brian Selznick and Mo Willems. “This exhibition has taken on a new significance since Maurice Sendak passed away earlier this year, and it is timely that the Appleton is honoring this brilliant artist and many of today’s children’s book illustrators,” said Appleton Curator of Exhibitions Ruth Grim.

Also this fall are two performances of the Ocala Symphony Orchestra’s SoundArt Music Series, After Hours starting in October and the Appleton’s 25th birthday celebration on Dec. 16 with free admission and refreshments.

Recent events

It is with a great deal of excitement that I assumed the duties of interim director for the Appleton Museum of Art last May.

During this transition, I continue to be impressed with the incredible talent and dedication of the Appleton’s staff. Together we are exploring opportunities to bring more exceptional traveling exhibitions, engaging educational programs, stimulating workshops, lectures, films and fun-filled special events.

A highlight of this fall season will be the Sept. 22 opening of New World Treasures: Artifacts from Hernando De Soto’s Florida Expedition. We are honored to host the first public showing of this remarkable collection of Spanish coins, chain mail, beads and other artifacts. All the artifacts were found recently north of Ocala in Marion County; it is the earliest authenticated contact site for Hernando De Soto’s Royal Spanish expedition through Florida in 1539. This exhibition will remain at the Appleton through the end of 2013 as part of the statewide Viva Florida 500 celebration.

Also coming this fall is FLORAda and Flowing Waters: The Art of Mark Messersmith, Margaret Ross Tolbert and Anna Tomczak. Opening Sept. 16, this major exhibition will showcase a collection of the dramatic and colorful works by three important Florida artists. The works in this show represent the uniqueness and beauty of Florida’s natural flora and fauna, interpreted through the distinctive style of each artist.

On Nov. 18 we will open Sendak & Co.: Children’s Book Illustrations Since “Where The Wild Things Are.” This exhibition will showcase more than 30 works by some of today’s top artists who were inspired by Maurice Sendak. Their art represents the many directions and styles children’s book illustrations have taken since Sendak published “Where The Wild Things Are” in 1963.

In our Balcony Gallery we will open Pure Photography: Pictorial and Modern Photographs from the Syracuse University Art Collection on Sept. 8, and The Nature of Things: The Art of Edward C. Smith on Nov. 3. The Appleton’s first floor will once again be filled with the charm and warmth of the holiday season by the display of A Dickens’ Christmas: The Urban Family Holiday Collection, an assemblage of hundreds of decorations, nutcrackers, dolls and miniature holiday scenes collected over the years by the Urban family.

Join us for another lively season of After Hours programming beginning this fall, the Ocala Symphony Orchestra’s SoundArt Music Series, Sunday art education films and the Martha O’Driscoll-Appleton Film Series. On Dec. 16, we are closing out our birthday year with a bang! We promise a fall season of excitement and adventure in art. We hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,JillianDanielRamsammy,Ed.D.InterimDirector

Why Create Endowments A patron may ask us, “What exactly is an endowment at the Appleton Museum of Art?” Endowments are permanent funds in which the principle is held in perpetuity and only the investment income is expended annually. There are many benefits of endowments to the museum. The primary purpose is to ensure that operations and programming continue during times of financial uncertainty. They can also protect the museum from the ups and downs of corporate, foundation, state and federal funding. The stability created by an endowment allows the museum to continue with planning even in unsure financial times. The benefit of donating toward an endowment is that the donor is leaving a permanent legacy for future generations. By leaving a legacy with an endowment gift, one has the knowledge that they will continue to touch people’s lives long after they themselves are gone.

For more information about the Appleton’s endowments, please contact Pamela Zeljak, development officer, at 352-291-4455, ext. 1294, or [email protected].
