Introduction

It has been explained in other talks that the following problems are interesting :

Let G = Sp(2n,R), the real symplectic group, and π an irreducible highest weight unitaryrepresentation of G .

(1) Find all Arthur parameters ψ such that π is in the corresponding Arthur packet Π(G , ψ).

(2) Show multiplicity one of π in Π(G , ψ).

(3) Determine the invariant ρπ attached to π and ψ (in this case, a character of thecomponent group A(ψ) of the centralizer of ψ in G = SO(2n + 1)).This is the crucial local ingredient in Arthur’s multiplicity formula.

Arthur packets, generalities

G : connected reductive algebraic group defined over a local field F , G = G(F ).

Arthur parameter ψ : W ′F × SL2 → LG .

W ′F : Weil-Deligne group of F if F non archimedean, Weil group if F archimedean.

C (ψ) = CentrG

(ψ), A(ψ) = C (ψ)/C (ψ)0 (finite group)

In the late 80’s, Arthur suggested that to such ψ there should be attached a ”packet”Π(G , ψ) of irreducible unitary reps of G , satisfying some properties (endoscopic identities,...).To describe these identities, to π ∈ Π(G , ψ) is attached ρπ, a C-valued class function onA(ψ)

Rmk. Here we assume G pure inner form of quasi-split group, otherwise A(ψ) has to bereplaced with a covering.

Arthur packets, generalities

Assume that G is such that the A(ψ) are abelian groups (for classical groups they are2-groups).

ρπ is then a C-linear combination of irreducible characters of A(ψ) and to ψ is attached

πAG (ψ)

a C-linear combination of irreducible unitary reps of of G × A(ψ).

In his 2013 book, Arthur established the existence of the πAG (ψ) when G is classical (sym-plectic or special orthogonal). He shows that the endoscopic identities completely charac-terize these objets (unitary groups, same results by Mok and Kaletha-Minguez-Shin-White)

If G is quasi-split, he shows that the C-linear combination πAG (ψ) has coefficients in Z>0.So πAG (ψ) can be seen as a finite length unitary rep. of G × A(ψ) (Moeglin-R for nonquasi-split special orthogonal groups). We can write this in two ways :

πAG (ψ) =⊕

η∈A(ψ)

πAG (ψ, η) η

where the πAG (ψ, η) are finite length unitary representation of G , or

πAG (ψ) =⊕

π∈Π(G ,ψ)

π ρπ

where ρπ is a finite length unitary representation of A(ψ).

Rmks. 1. dim ρπ is the multiplicity of π in the packet Π(G , ψ)

2. If s ∈ A(ψ), one can evaluate πAG (ψ) on s and get a virtual representation of G

πAG (ψ)(s).

There are the ones which are transfered from endoscopic groups (endoscopic identities).

3. Endoscopy theory relies on the choice of transfer factors. To fix them completely, oneneeds choice of a Whittaker datum for G . Above, the correspondence π 7→ ρπ depends onthis choice (in a somewhat non essential way).

Parameters for G = Sp(2n,R)

From now on F = R, G = Sp(2n), LG = SO(2n + 1,C).

Arthur parameters :

Irreducible representations of WR × SL2

R[a] : a-dimensional irreducible algebraic rep of SL2

So irreducible reps of WR × SL2 are of the form :

δ(s1, s2) R[a] or χ(s, ε) R[a]

Parity condition :δ(s1, s2) R[a] has good parity if s = s1 + s2 = 0, t = s1 − s2 and a in Z>0 such thatt + a− 1 ∼= 0 mod 2.

χ(s, ε) R[a] has good parity if s = 0, a− 1 ∼= 0 mod 2.

Good parity ⇐⇒ orthogonal rep.All others irred. rep of WR × SL2 are of bad parity.

We have reduced problems 1,2,3 to the case ψ = ψgp. Now suppose that ψ = ψu (unipotentparameters).

Elements in Π(G , ψ) are obtained by Howe’s correspondence (symplectic/even orthogonaldual pairs).Langlands parameters are notoriously hard to compute (ask specialists !).

Why the formula for Sq so complicated ?

We need to choose Whittaker datum on G and Gu for the formula to make sense. So weneed to choose Whittaker datum for all Sp(2N,R), N ∈ Z>0, simultaneously and in acompatible way.

”compatible” could mean ”with respect to parabolic induction”. That’s usually what peopledo.

”compatible” could mean ”with respect to cohomological induction”.

One cannot have both....

Also, cohomological induction doesn’t commute with endoscopic transfer. This inducescomplicated twists in the formula.

Multiplicity one is preserved.

Irreducibility is not preserved by cohomological induction. There can also be vanishing.

Multiplicity one is lost !

Highest weight modules : (π,V ) irreducible Harish-Chandra module for G such that thereexists an highest weight vector 0 6= v ∈ V , n · v = 0, where n is the nilradical of a Borelsubalgebra b of g.

Fact. Either (exclusive cases) :• V is finite dimensional, one can then take any b ,• V is infinite dimensional, and b = bk ⊕ p+ (say V is holomorphic),• V is infinite dimensional, and b = bk ⊕ p− (say V is antiholomorphic),where bk is a Borel subalgebra of k.

if (π,V ) is holomorphic, its contragredient is antiholomorphic. So we consider only holo-morphic modules.

Regular infinitesimal character

The proof is global. It uses Yamana’s results on global theta correspondence.

Let us fix now a regular inf. char. for G = Sp(2n,R), that is

χ = (χ1, . . . , χn), χi ∈ Z, χ1 > . . . > χn > 0.

Suppose π(µ) has inf. char χ. Then either

• mn > n. In this case

(χ1, . . . , χn) = (m1 − 1,m2 − 2, . . . ,mn − n)

and π(µ) is an holomorphic discrete series.

χ being fixed, µ is determined by a integer a ∈ {0, . . . , amax} where amax is determined asfollows

If χn 6= 1, amax = 0, if not amax is the length k of the longest sequence

Theorem

Let ψ be an Arthur parameter for G with regular integral inf. char χ as above. Let amax

obtained from χ as above. Then ψu = η R[a(ψu)] with a(ψu) ≤ amax and πa ∈ Π(G , ψ) iffa(ψu) = 2a + 1.

Such a parameter is called an Adams-Johnson parameter. The module π(µ) = πa areAq(λ)-modules (cohomologically induced from characters).

Computation of ρπ for π = πn(m) or π = σn,m

We now know that for π = πn(m) or π = σn,m (or their contragredient) the multiplicity ofπ in any Arthur packet containing it is one.

The remaining problem is now to compute the character ρπ of A(ψ) attached to π and ψ.

The characterization of πA(ψ) by endoscopic identities in Arthur 2013 depends on thenormalization of the so called transfer factors (Langlands-Shelstad and Kottwitz-Shelstad),i.e. on the choice of a Whittaker datum for G .

For G = Sp(2n,R) there are two inequivalent choices that we distinguish by a choice ofδ ∈ {±1}.
