What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a form of joint disorder that involves inflammation in one or more joints. There are over 100 different forms of arthritis.
The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis a result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or age.
Other arthritis forms are rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and related autoimmune diseases. Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection.
Understanding Arthritis?
The major complaint by individuals who have arthritis is joint pain.
Pain is often constant, and may be localized to the joint affected.
The pain from arthritis is due to inflammation that occurs around the joint, damage to the joint from disease, daily wear and tear of joint, muscle strains caused by forceful movements against stiff painful joints and fatigue.
Osteoarthritis
It’s the wear and tear that happens to our body when joints are overused. Joints that bear weight, such as knees, hips, feet, and spine are the most common places it affects.
The most commonly involved joints are those near the ends of the fingers, at the base of the thumb, neck, lower back, knees, and hips. Joints on one side of the body are often more affected than those on the other.
Osteoarthritis also known as degenerative arthritis, degenerative joint disease, or osteoarthrosis, is a type of joint disease that results from breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis The most common symptoms are joint pain and stiffness. Initially, symptoms may occur only following exercise, but
over time may become constant. Other symptoms may include joint swelling, decreased
range of motion, and when the back is affected weakness or numbness of the arms and legs.
The most commonly involved joints are those near the ends of the fingers, at the base of the thumb, neck, lower back, knees, and hips. Joints on one side of the body are often more affected than those on the other. Usually the problems come on over years
Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long lasting autoimmune
disorder that primarily affects joints. It typically results in warm, swollen, and painful joints. Pain
and stiffness often worsen following rest. Most commonly the wrist and hands are involved with
typically the same joints involved on both sides of the body. The disease may also affect other parts of the body. This
may result in a low red blood cell count, inflammation around the lungs, and inflammation around the heart. Fever and low energy may also be present. Often symptoms come on gradually over weeks to months.
Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis
In Rheumatoid Arthritis(RA) Joints become swollen, tender and warm, and stiffness limits their movement.
With time, multiple joints are affected (it is a polyarthritis). Most commonly involved are the small joints of the hands, feet and
cervical spine, but larger joints like the shoulder and knee can also be involved.
RA typically manifests with signs of inflammation, with the affected joints being swollen, warm, painful and stiff, particularly early in the morning on waking or following prolonged inactivity.
Increased stiffness early in the morning is often a prominent feature of the disease and typically lasts for more than an hour
