Subject: BH-Rockingham RI/FS OS Trip Report Technical Memorandum Split Sampling Program-August 1993
Arthur D. Litde conducted split sampling and oversight of sampling performed by Balsam Environmental Consultants (Balsam), as part of Task 3 in Work Plan Amendment No. 1, for the above referred Work Assignment. This trip report, a deliverable under Subtask 3.1, is divided into three sections: 1) split sampling summary and modifications from the Work Plan and Draft Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPjP); 2) oversight of Balsam's sampling procedures; and 3) copies of the daily field logs. Our basis for review of the field procedures was the Proposed Ground Water, Surface Water, and Sediment Sampling Program for July 1993, prepared by Balsam.
1.0 Split Sampling Summary
The split sampling event was completed in three days, from August 24 to 26, 1993. Split samples were collected in accordance with Work Plan Amendment No. 1 and the Split Sampling Program specified in my August 4, 1994 memorandum to you. Split samples were collected at the following locations:
Ground Water (2) : • MW-J37 • MW-J38
Surface Water (2) : • RW-1 • RW-2
Sediment (8) : • RS-1,2,3, & 4 • • SS-6, 8, & 9 • Additional sample from base of drainage from SS-6
(SS-6A).

The ground water samples were to be analyzed for the following parameters:
SAS 524.2 VOAs (2) SAS Low-Level Semivolatile Organics (SVOAs) (2) Target Analyte List (TAL) Inorganics (2) TAL Cyanide (2) Target Compound List (TCL) Pesticide/PCBs (2)
The surface water samples were to be analyzed for:
SAS 524.2 VOAs (2) SAS Low-Level SVOAs (2) SAS Low-Level Inorganics (2) SAS Low-Level Cyanide (2) TCL pesticides/PCBs (2)
The sediment samples were to be analyzed for:
TCL VOAs (8) TCL SVOAs (8) TAL Inorganics (8) TAL Cyanide (8) TCL Pesticides/PCBs (8)
No modifications were made in the field to the sampling plan. Table 1 summarizes the split sampling program as completed. Details of the program are discussed below.
Ground Water sampling:
• The equipment blank was taken from the bailer used at MW-J37 and was analyzed for SAS 524.2 VOAs, SAS Low-level SVOAs, TAL Inorganics, TAL Cyanide, and TCL Pesticide/PCBs.
• The field duplicate (field collocate) sample was collected at MW-J37, after the split samples were collected.

• The matrix spike/matrix spike duplicate (MS/MSD) sample was collected at MW-J38.
Surface Water Sampling
The field duplicate sample was collect at RW-1 • The MS/MSD sample was collected at RW-2
An equipment blank was not collected for surface water because no equipment, other than the sample botties, was used.
Sediment Sampling:
• At all sediment sampling sites, the VOA sample was collected as a grab, the SVOA, Inorganic, Cyanide, and Pesticide/PCB were collected as split samples.
The culvens at SS-6 and SS-9 were not flowing, therefore, SS-6, SS-6A, and SS9 were taken from the dry bed area.
• The equipment blank was taken from the equipment (stainless steel spoon and bowl) used at RS-1 and was analyzed for TCL VOAs, TCL SVOAs, TAL Inorganics, TAL Cyanide, and TCL Pesticide/PCBs. Balsam's deionized water was used for the blank.
• The field duplicate was taken at RS-2.
• The MS/MSD was collected at RS-4.
Samples were sent to the following laboratories for analysis:

2.0 Oversight of Balsam's Sampling Procedures:
Concurrent with collecting split samples, Arthur D. Littie provided oversight of the Balsam's sample collection, preservation, instrument calibration, decontamination, and sample handling procedures.
Ground Water Sampling:
Field ground water sampling procedures were in general accordance with the standard operating procedures in the Balsam Work Plan (September 1992).
In general, the ground water sampling program went smoothly. Balsam personnel were proficient in ground water sampling and the locations were relatively accessible. MW-J37 was purged and sampled on August 24. MW-J38 was purged in the aftemoon on August 24, and sampled the following moming, on August 25.
Surface Water and Sediment Sampling:
Field surface water and sediment sampling procedures were in general accordance with the standard operating procedures outiined in the Balsam Work Plan (September, 1992).
A stainless steel hand auger was used to collect discrete sediment samples. The auger was decontaminated, according to plan, between each location. To collect the river samples, the bottles were alternated until all were filled.

Accessibility was a problem when collecting the surface water samples. The sites were located at the bottom of steep hills with no trails. As a result, it was difficult to transport water samples. Use of a canoe or other boat would improve accessibility of the surface water sites and decrease sampling time.
Two flaws in Balsam's sediment sampling procedure were noted:
• Sediment on the outside of the rim of the jar was wiped off and returned to the composite in the stainless steel bowl.
• Sediment was pressed down into the jar with the sampler's fingers.
Decontamination Procedures:
Decontamination of heavy equipment was conducted by Balsam personnel on a heavy plastic sheet which drained into a leachate collection system in the landfill area. Decontamination procedures were in accordance with the standard operating procedures outiined in the Balsam Work Plan. Equipment such as bailers, stainless steel bowls and spoons, and hand augers, were decontaminated using 10% nitric acid and distilled water.
Calibration Procedures:
Calibration of all instruments was performed by Balsam personnel twice a day, in the moming and in the evening. All procedures and observations were noted in their field book. Methods appeared to be consistent and well documented.
