Mae’r arddangosfa yma’n cyflwyno gwaith diweddar gan naw artist o bedwarban y byd. Mae eu gwaith yn gofyn pwy ydyn ni ac edrych ar y cymdeithasaurydyn ni’n byw ynddynt.

Mae’r artistiaid eisoes wedi ennill cydnabyddiaeth yn eu gwledydd eu hunainneu yn eu rhan nhw o’r byd, ac maent yn dechrau ennill eu plwyf ar lwyfanryngwladol. Fe’u dewiswyd gan ddau guradur rhyngwladol - Isabel Carlos oBortiwgal a Bisi Silva o Nigeria, yn dilyn proses fyd-eang o chwilio acenwebu. Mae hyn wedi cynnwys dros 400 o enwebiadau o 65 o wledydd.

This exhibition presents recent work by nine artists from across the world.Their work explores who we are and the societies we live in.

The artists have already achieved recognition in their own country or part ofthe world, and are now becoming better known internationally. They havebeen selected by two international curators - Isabel Carlos from Portugaland Bisi Silva from Nigeria, following a global search and nominationprocess. This has included over 400 nominations from 65 countries.

The artists form the shortlist for the 3rd Artes Mundi Prize which will beawarded on 24 April 2008. The Prize of £40,000 is intended to go to the artistor artists (if they work collaboratively as a pair), who consistently makethought provoking work of quality that encourages us to reflect on the humancondition. The international panel of Judges will consider their work fromthe last 5-8 years.

Ganwyd Lida Abdul yn Kabul, Afghanistan ym 1973. Gadawodd yn fuan wedii’r Undeb Sofietaidd ymosod ar ei gwlad, a bu’n byw mewn canolfannaulloches am bum mlynedd cyn symud i America. Ar hyn o bryd mae’n bywrhwng Afghanistan ac America.

Mae Lida Abdul yn defnyddio fideo, ffilm, ffotograffiaeth, gosodweithiau apherfformiadau byw i archwilio a darlunio effeithiau rhyfel. Trwy ei gwaithmae’n ceisio deall y trychineb a ddinistriodd ei gwlad am dros ddau ddegawd.Mae ei ffilm yn darlunio tirwedd y wlad wedi’i chwalu gan ryfel ac yn llawnrwbel adeiladau wedi’u dinistrio. Lida Abdul was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1973. She left shortly after hercountry was invaded by the Soviet Union and lived in asylum centres for fiveyears before moving to the USA. She currently lives between Afghanistanand the USA.

Lida Abdul uses video, film, photography, installation and live performance toexplore and visualise the aftermath of war. Through her work she has tried tocomprehend the disaster that devastated her home country for more thantwo decades. Her films depict the Afghan landscape, war torn and strewnwith the rubble of destroyed buildings. Within such settings she placesfigures, usually involved in collective movement or ritual. The architectureand debris form a metaphor for human suffering and act as the bearers ofmemory. She sees her work as an attempt to ‘deal with a new reality’. LidaAbdul’s work not only speaks of violence and devastation but also of survival,reclamation and rebuilding.

Working as a woman in this context has been challenging. Lida Abdul hasdeveloped two approaches to making her work. With some pieces sheresearches and designs, having the actions performed by volunteers. Withothers she captures what she sees. Sound is used to punctuate her images.

O edrych yn graffach mae ei waith yn cynnwys cyfeiriadau atddigwyddiadau ehangach y byd, newyddion a hanes celfyddyd. Mae’r hollelfennau hyn, rhai’n fwy adnabyddus na’i gilydd, yn cynnwys cymysgedd osylwadau parchus a hiwmor. Mae’r ffaith ei fod yn defnyddio elfennau o fywydlleol India llawn cymaint â materion byd-eang yn ei wneud yn fath o artist/athronydd. Mae ei ddull o adrodd stori’n uno’r stori’i hun â’r ystyr ehangachsy’n ei wneud yn ddealladwy i bawb.

N S Harsha is an image maker, through paint and also through installation.His subject matter comprises day to day activities or the details of life. Oncloser inspection it contains references to world events and news as well asworld art history. All these elements, both recognisable and potentially lessfamiliar, are infused with a mixture of respectful comment and humour. Thisdrawing upon elements of both local life in India as much as global concerns,makes him almost an artist / philosopher. His story telling is the kind wherethe intrinsic story as well as its wider meaning and significance are fused tobecome universally understandable.

Physically his paintings seem to expand the tradition of Indian miniaturepainting. N S Harsha was born in 1969 in Mysore, India, where he currentlylives and works. Having studied at one of his country’s most respected artschools (Baroda) he returned to his home city where his studio is in the midstof ordinary daily life. From here he can refer to figures who pass in the street,as much as upon wider world events. By drawing our attention to thewhimsical, the absurd as much as the tragic, without judgement, Harshaenables us to reflect on the world around us.

Ganed Abdoulaye Konaté ym 1953 a chafodd ei hyfforddi yng ngwlad ei febyd,Mali, Gorllewin Affrica ac yn Havana, Ciwba. Dechreuodd ei yrfa fel peintiwrcyfansoddiadau haniaethol a ffurfiol, cyn troi wedyn at greu tecstilau graddfafawr; fel ymateb pragmatig i’r deunydd oedd ar gael, cymrodd cotwm leacrylig. Mali yw’r cynhyrchydd cotwm mwyaf ond un yn y byd ar ôl yr Aifft.

Nod Konaté oedd mynegi rhai o’r materion sy’n gyffredin yn ei wlad ynogystal â’r rhai sy’n gyffredin ledled y byd. Dros ugain mlynedd mae wedimyfyrio, trwy gyfrwng ei decstilau a’i osodweithiau, ar faterion fel effaithamgylcheddol datgoedwigo, y dinistr a ddaw yn sgil sychder, a’r gwrthdaroparhaus yn y Dwyrain Canol. Yn Gris-gris pour Israël et la Palestine, mae’ncyfosod symbolau pwerus baner Israel a’r kaffiyeh Palesteinaidd (sgarff dua gwyn a wisgir fel symbol o genedlaetholdeb Palesteinaidd). Fe’uhamgylchynir â gris-gris traddodiadol o Orllewin Affrica, sef swynoglausy’n gwarchod rhag drwg ac yn dod â lwc dda.

Mae Konaté yn artist sy’n cysylltu â’r byd ehangach - ei ddymuniad ywgweld heddwch a chymdeithas well. Gyda pharch at draddodiad mae’nuno’r estheteg leol â materion y byd yn sgil globaleiddio.

Born in 1953, Abdoulaye Konaté trained in his native Mali, West Africa andin Havana, Cuba. He began his career as a painter of abstract and formalcompositions, but turned later to creating large scale textiles; as a pragmaticresponse to the availability of materials, cotton replaced acrylic. Mali issecond only to Egypt in the amount of cotton it grows.

Konaté wanted to express something of the issues prevalent within his owncountry as much as those that were universal. Over twenty years he hasreflected, within his textiles and installations, upon such issues as theenvironmental effects of de-forestation and the devastation drought brings,or the on-going conflict within the Middle East. In Gris-gris pour Israël et laPalestine, he juxtaposes the potent symbols of the Israeli flag and thePalestinian kaffiyeh (the black and white headscarf often worn as symbolof Palestinian nationalism). He surrounds them with the traditional WestAfrican gris-gris, the sewn amulets to ward off evil and bring luck.

Konaté is an artist who engages with the wider world - he wishes for peace,for a better society. In respecting tradition he brings together the aestheticsof the local with concerns of the globalised world.

Ganwyd Rosângela Rennó ym 1962, acmae’n byw ac yn gweithio yn Rio deJaneiro, Brasil ar hyn o bryd. Ym 1994 fe anfarwolodd y gweithwyr a fu farw wrthadeiladu prifddinas newydd ei gwlad, Brasilia, drwy ddefnyddio delweddau o’ucardiau adnabod. Trwy ail-gyflwyno ffotograffau neu eiriaumewn cyd-destungwahanol mae’r artist yn creu gwybodaeth neu dystiolaeth newydd. Maent ynsbarduno’r gwyliwr i holi cwestiynau – pwy gymerodd y ffotograff, pam, beth syddwedi ei golli neu ei adennill drwy ddangos y delweddau eto? Fel brodor o wladsy’n ymfalchiomewn edrych tua’r dyfodol, mae Rennó’n ail-ddyfeisio’r gorffennol?

Rosângela Rennómakes use of existing images, photographs and texts; theiroriginal purpose was not connected to themaking of art and they have beendiscarded by their original authors and owners. She selects those that have beenproduced for institutional, legal or information based purposes or simply forfamily albums. Part of her process is to collect and archive these images, usingthem at some later date or re-presenting them as a catalogue in someway.

Her works act as vehicles of visual memory, making forgotten faces animatedonce again, and peoples’ lives real. Her subjects, anonymous then as much asnow, remind us how photographs ensure that important events in recenthistory will never be forgotten.

Rosângela Rennó, born in 1962, currently lives and works in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil. Back in 1994 she immortalised the workers who died in the building ofher country’s new capital city Brasilia, using images from their identity cards.By re-presenting photographs or text in another context the artist providesnew information or evidence. They immediately prompt the viewer to askquestions - who took the photograph, why, what has been lost or what hasbeen recovered in the images being seen again. Living in a country whichconstantly promotes itself as embracing the future, Rennó re-invents the past?

Mae Mircea Cantor yn defnyddio gosodweithiau, ffotograffau a ffilm iddarlunio pethau. Mircea Cantor uses installation, photography and film tomake things visible.He is not interested in creating images for their own sake, more for what theycan say, or suggest. The viewer is left to finally interpret themeaning of the work;its physical simplicity often belies the complexity of its potential meaning.

Cantor is interested in ‘everyday poetics’ as he puts it, but his everyday hasinvolved observation of politics inmany forms. He was born in Romania in 1977and in 1999, left to hitch-hike across Europe before eventually settling in France.He currently divides his time between Romania and Paris. His work is subtlysuggestive of how societies operate, how communities respond, where irony orbeauty co-exists with brutal reality.

Cantor’s work often forces us to question our reading of and assumptions aboutthe society around us. His seductiveDiamond Corn (2005) is both beautiful andhaunting. Amaize cob ismade valuable by being carved in crystal yet it stillsymbolises one of the world’s most universal foodstuffs, particularly in poorersocieties. His short film Shadow for a while (2007), showing the reflection of aflag burning until it disappears, is a potent allegory of the transience of nations,communities and identities.

Susan Norrie uses film, photography and installation to explore thecatastrophes of manmade and natural disasters. Working with the fragilityof the environment and exploring the recent increase in the regularity ofearthquakes, volcanic eruptions, storms and drought, Norrie commentson a world that is in flux and ecological change.

Digital imaging is an ideal medium to deal with the information overload of anincreasingly media orientated world. Norrie sees the artist as a barometer ofevents, and admits to liking the idea of the artist as a revolutionary romantic.This doesn’t mean that she treats her subjects lightly; she often highlights howman’s actions seem to be matched with an abrogation of responsibility such aswith the nuclear bomb, oil spills and insecticide spraying. Her work createsdiscussion of the complexities of our contemporary condition, and how wecannot separate ourselves from our environment.

“In telling other people’s stories and negotiating an ethical understanding ofother worlds, I needed to work collaboratively. Both David Mackenzie and JustinHale shared their historical and personal knowledge of Indonesia, allowing meaccess to this complex culture. Mae Matthew Dalziel a Louise Scullion yn archwilio sut beth yw bod ynddynol mewn byd naturiol. Gan gydnabod bod nifer o bobl yn “ymwneud âphobl eraill yn unig, bron” ac yn dibynnu’n llwyr ar dechnolegau artiffisial,mae eu gwaith yn canolbwyntio ar y bywyd sydd o’n cwmpas nad yw’n“ddynol”. Maent yn defnyddio ffotograffiaeth, fideo, sain a cherflunwaith iarchwilio cymhlethdod natur, a’r ffin amgylcheddol sy’n bodoli o’n hamgylch.

Dros y blynyddoedd, maent wedi gwneud ymdrech i adnabod a deallagweddau o’r tir a’i drigolion – anifeiliaid, adar, pryfed a phlanhigion. Ganeu bod yn byw ac yn gweithio ar arfordir dwyreiniol yr Alban, mae’r môr hefydyn gyfeirbwynt parhaol. Yn hytrach na chynnig darlun o’r tu allan i’r bydnaturiol, mae eu gwaith yn annog y gynulleidfa i ymgolli mewn rhaiagweddau ohono, yn aml o safbwynt planhigion neu adar.

Heb ymgyrchu mae Dalziel + Scullion yn cydweithio i dynnu sylw at y moddy mae’r ddynoliaeth yn dylanwadu ar yr ecosystemau bregus sy’n ffocws i’wgwaith. Mae eu gwaith yn ein helpu i weld a phrofi’r amgylchedd sydd o’ncwmpas o safbwynt gwahanol ac i feithrin perthynas newydd ag ef, a pharchnewydd at ein hecoleg gyffredin.

Matthew Dalziel and Louise Scullion are concerned with the position of beinghuman in the natural world. Acknowledging that many humans “participatealmost exclusively with other humans” and function increasingly with only man-made technologies, their work is primarily interested in observing themore than“human life forms” we live amongst. They employ photography, video, sound andsculpture to explore the complexities of nature, and the environmental frontierthat exists around us.

Over recent years they have immersed themselves in knowing and understandingaspects of the land and its inhabitants - animals, birds, insects and plants. Livingand working on the east coast of Scotland, the sea is also a continuous point ofreference. Rather than giving a view from outside the natural world, their workencourages the viewer to immerse themselves into aspects of it, often from theviewpoint of plants or birds.

Working collaboratively Dalziel + Scullion highlight but are careful not tocampaign about humankind’s influence on the delicate eco-systems they focusupon. Instead their work helps us to see and experience our environment froman alternative perspective and to establish a new relationship with it, a newrespect for our common ecology.

Mae Vasco Araújo yn defnyddio perfformiadau, ffotograffiaeth, fideo acherflunwaith i ymchwilio i wahanol agweddau o’r cyflwr dynol. Mae’n gosodffigyrau a chymeriadau mewn lleoliadau arwyddocaol, ac yn defnyddio hendestunau neu wrthrychau i gyfeirio at gymhlethdodau a chyfyng-gyngorcymdeithasau’r gorffennol a’r presennol. Ymysg pethau eraill mae ei waithyn archwilio ymddygiad cymdeithasol, ystrydebau diwylliannol,cydymffurfiaeth, camwahaniaethu a hunaniaeth rywiol.

Ganwyd Vasco Araújo ym 1975 yn Lisbon, Portiwgal, lle mae’n byw ac yngweithio heddiw. Fe’i hyfforddwyd fel canwr yn wreiddiol, ac mae ei waithyn cyfeirio’n aml at fyd opera. Mae ei fideos yn aml yn defnyddio cymeriadauneu straeon cyfarwydd o fyd celf, llenyddiaeth a hanes Ewrop. O bryd i’wgilydd mae’n newid gwedd y pynciau yn ei ffilmiau a’r gwrthrychau, nid i gelueu hystyr, ond i gynyddu eu cyfeiriad at realaeth.

Mae Araújo yn gyfarwyddwr plotiau a chyflwyniad. Fel cyfarwyddwr theatrneu ffilm, mae’n yn dyfeisio cymeriadau a setiau er mwyn creu cyfeiriadau afydd yn ein galluogi i edrych ar gymdeithas o’r newydd. Mae ei waith yn aml-haenog, ac yn defnyddio amrywiaeth eang o gyfeiriadau a dylanwadau; mae’ndod o hyd i ddulliau o gwestiynnu cymdeithas fodern trwy ddefnyddioieithoedd cymdeithasau’r gorffennol, a thalu teyrnged iddynt.

Vasco Araújo uses performance, photography, video and sculpture to investigatedifferent aspects of the human condition. He places figures and characters withinsettings of significance, and uses existing texts or objects to allude to thecomplexities and conundrums of society, past and present. His work has exploredamongst many things - social behaviour, cultural stereotypes, conformity,discrimination and sexual identity.

Vasco Araújo was born in 1975 in Lisbon, Portugal, where he lives and workstoday. Originally trained as a singer, his work often refers to the world of operaand his videos frequently draw upon characters or stories we know fromEuropean culture, literature and history. Sometimes his subjects, in both filmand object, are presented in disguise, not to obscure their meaning but toincrease their reference to reality.

Araújo is a director of plot and presentation. He is a like a theatre or film director,constantly inventing characters and sets in order to construct allusions fromwhich we can view society afresh. His work is multi-layered, employing a widerange of references and influences; he finds ways of questioningmodern societyby using, and paying tribute to the languages of past societies.
