Personal Philosophy

Art is a reflection of the world through individual portrayal of emotion by use of symbolism, thought, composition and logic. My goal for becoming a teacher of the arts is to influence the student mind in a way that allows them to be expressive and explore their environment. I feel that the mind of a child is greatly influenced by their surroundings, and that it is imperative for children to have a creative outlet such as creating art. Through emotion and expression, children can learn about themselves and explore their likes and dislikes, and become more aware of the visual world.

Sense your environmentHome

The theme for this semesters Art Express was “sense your environment.” We collaboratively as a class decided on the theme. We chose a theme surrounding the senses because not only did it provide a wide variety of lesson plan opportunities, but it also is a wonderful topic for students to become aware of themselves and the environment they live in.

Learning Environment: Classroom Layout

Home

Never before Art Express had I experienced working with 6 year olds. The first thing that I prepared for my lessons was the way to position the students with special consideration of where to place students with special needs. After one class, I was able to learn about the students. I developed an understanding of who needed special attention, who was talkative and who were the trouble makers. Getting to know my students first allowed me to prepare a proper design for an effective classroom layout for efficient instruction of the 6 year olds.

Lesson Plan: Motivation• I found that it is important to consider a motivation for the students when

planning my lesson. Whether it be a visual example or object that will intrigue student and keep their focus on demonstration. I found it very important to incorporate visuals into an art lesson to allow students to grasp concept and effectively fulfill objectives. I used Images from other artists work as a motivation for the students. I Showed them Images, and together we critiqued the work to evoke thought and to involve them in the lesson.

Learning Environment: Supplies

Home

Special consideration for the supplies needed for each lesson was taken. I was sure to provide the children with materials that they would be familiar with, and be comfortable working with. By creating examples for each project, and providing slide shows and presentations for each topics discussed, the students were able to successfully create fun and creative pieces.

Learning Environment: Communication

Home

Luckily, our class was exceptionally bright and loved to be involved in class discussions. All questions that I presented them with were answered with creative solutions and interesting responses. I think my favorite part of working with the 6 year olds was the fact that they expressed themselves honestly and were very opinionated on numerous topics discussed.

Learning Environment: Classroom management

Home

Josh and I were able to manage the classroom very efficiently and effectively. Only once during Art Express did the students get restless and we had to raise our voices to get attention. Josh and I both used several different techniques to get the students attention, from flickering the lights to giving them a countdown to finish a project. Parents sometimes were late dropping there students off, and some students came early. Josh and I provided the students that arrived early with makers and paper to create a drawing for us about themselves.

Collaborative RelationshipsWorking with Josh during art express was a wonderful experience. It was

very nice to have a colleague to work with and discuss ideas for lessons, and on how our progress was throughout the course. Also, the discussions before and after our lessons were helpful in helping to develop our lesson plans, and see what other teachers were doing for there lessons. Peer criticism is very important in developing ones teaching skills. Art express was overall a wonderful collaborative experience.

First Lesson: Taste your community

Home

The first lesson that Josh and I Decided to prepare for the students was on the sense of taste. Josh presented this lesson to the students. We discussed the different types of foods for different cultures and the significance of the foods for the particular areas. Josh discussed some of the local interests such as DeKalb’s Corn Fest that takes place downtown every year. We discussed the significance of corn for the DeKalb Community, and how Corn Fest brings the community together through food and interaction. The children loved talking about their favorite foods and the different types of foods their families eat. It was very interesting to hear the different likes and dislikes of 6 year olds.

First Lesson: Taste your community

Home

For the Taste your community project, the students were shown examples created by Josh and I of our favorite foods painted in Tempera paint on colored construction paper. The students were able to pick the color of there paper, and created two paintings. One painting was of their favorite foods, and the other was of the foods that they enjoy eating from DeKalb. Many students included restaurants that they enjoy eating at in their community. It was very interesting for Josh and I to see the differences in the taste of 6 year olds.

First Lesson: Taste your community

Home

After each painting, we discussed several pieces that the students had created. the students enjoyed not only discussing their pieces but also seemed proud of what they had created. A few of the students expressed their love for sweets such as candy and cakes, and surprisingly some of them seemed to enjoy healthy foods such like apples and carrots even. Josh and I stressed the importance for the students to think about the foods and how they are significant to them.

Second Lesson: Feel- Texture Tiles

Home

The second lesson was on the sense of feel. Being the second day of art express, the students seemed to be a bit more comfortable with one another, and seemed to interact with Josh and I more. The students were all very excited to share what they had done the week before, and how excited they were to work with clay. For the lesson of touch, We discussed different types of textures and how those can be created. The students were to create texture tiles using various tools and methods of achieving interesting textures.

Page 15: Arte 482 Resources and methods in Art Education Art Express Georgia Leake z125317 Instructor: Maria Lim.

Second Lesson: Feel- Texture Tiles

Home

Josh Began the lesson by introducing various textures and how you can feel the differences in them. Through use of a PowerPoint presentation, Josh showed various examples of texture, and different methods of achieving the textures. For this lesson, the students were told to create four tiles out of clay, with different textures using both clay tools and natural materials. During the demonstration, Josh showed the students how they would cut each individual tile from a template that he had prepared. Using different methods of applying texture to the clay, Josh demonstrated to the students how they would be able to be experimental and explore the various ways of creating texture.

Page 16: Arte 482 Resources and methods in Art Education Art Express Georgia Leake z125317 Instructor: Maria Lim.

Second Lesson: Feel- Texture Tiles

Home

The students displayed some difficulty at first using the 5x5 cardboard template to cut out their tiles, but with assistance from Josh and I, the students were able to successfully cut out the tiles. Josh had supplied various tools for working with the clay such as pine cones, that created interesting organic shapes and forks that could create a texture pattern when applied to the clay and dragged. The students all seemed to really enjoy working with the clay, and were constantly calling Josh and I over to show us the work they were creating. During this lesson, the students discussed things around there home that had interesting textures, and seemed very interested in finding more interesting textures.

Page 17: Arte 482 Resources and methods in Art Education Art Express Georgia Leake z125317 Instructor: Maria Lim.

Second Lesson: Feel- Texture Tiles

Home

After the students created texture on the tiles, Josh and I demonstrated how they would place the tiles together to create a box. The students had some difficulty with this part, but seemed to enjoy the challenge. After the boxes were finished, the students individually placed them on drying racks to be fired. The students seemed ecstatic about constructing something out of clay and having something fired. I feel that the texture tile lesson was successful because the students demonstrated an understanding of not only the concept of different textures, but also learned several hand building techniques of ceramics.

Third Lesson: Visual interpretation of music

Home

The third topic discussed during Art Express for the 6 year olds was Music and expressionist art. The Lesson was created so that students formed an understanding that music, like art, is an expressive form of portraying emotion through sound, rhythm and feeling. By using expressive colors, pattern and line, the students were able to explore how to visually portray the emotion and rhythm in music. For the lesson, I decided to first instruct the students on abstract expression and some abstract expressionist artists. By understanding how art can be expressive the students then applied that knowledge to form an understanding of music as a form of expression.

Abstract Expressionism

cont.• When we think of Abstract Expressionism we could think of Jackson Pollock, or DeKooning.

Abstract Expressionism

cont.• Abstract Expressionism was a movement that was culturally needed at the time that allowed people to think in a less structured way. The first and second World War caused people to be forced to sacrifice a lot and their lives had become expressionless.

Abstract Expressionism

cont.• Abstract expressionism allowed people to think and perceive art in a new way. The term, Abstract Expression that gave this movement its name was first stated in a March issue of the New Yorker by writer Robert Coates. The movement itself was geared toward existential thought and self being, the Abstract expressionist movement brought a new view on fine Art and created a new freedom expressed through bold use of color, line, form and non-figurative, non- realistic art.

Third Lesson: Visual interpretation of music

Home

I prepared a slide show for the students with various images with examples of work by Jackson Pollock. In the presentation, I discussed various ways of expression using line, color, pattern and shapes. For a visual example, I showed a brief 5 minute clip of the Walt Disney movie, Fantasia. The clip was a wonderful example of music being expressed visually, and how different emotions can be portrayed through the use of color, line and repetition of form. The students seemed to really enjoy the clip, and I feel that it helped them to grasp the concept of art and music as a form of expression.

Example of work

Third Lesson: Visual interpretation of music

Home

For this lesson, I chose three songs with different styles and emotion for the students to portray (Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman, The Entertainer, by Scott Joplin, Return of the Las Palmas, by Madness) Before beginning my demonstration, I played Sing, Sing, Sing, by Benny Goodman and had the students close there eyes and imagine what they are hearing and what they think about when they listen to the music. The students all outwardly expressed what they were experiencing, and seemed very excited about thinking about music in a narrative context much like displayed in the clip of Walt Disney’s Fantasia.

Example of work

Third Lesson: Visual interpretation of music

Home

After the students Listened to the song, we discussed what they thought the mood of the song was, and what colors they felt expressed and if any line, repetition and what shapes they imagined. I played the song again, while giving my demonstration. I spoke out loud while I demonstrated, verbally expressing how I heard spirals, reds, yellows, and line. The students assisted in what shapes I should paint and what colors I should use. The students all seemed to think this was very fun to interpret music through painting.

Third Lesson: Visual interpretation of musicOverall, the students seemed to really enjoy the lesson on visually interpreting music. The end products that they produced displayed an understanding of concept and technique. I feel like the lesson could be developed more and used for an older group of students, and still be a success.

For the final lesson, I wanted to do something a little more challenging for the students. Because we had worked a lot with paints and markers, and the students seemed to really enjoy the texture tiles lesson, I wanted to do a project that was more hands on.

Page 35: Arte 482 Resources and methods in Art Education Art Express Georgia Leake z125317 Instructor: Maria Lim.

Fourth lesson: Sight- book making

For the sketchbook making assignment, I first prepared a PowerPoint presentation that gave a brief history of bookmaking, and some various cultures that made different types of books. The books that we made in class were accordion books, much like from china and Mexico as discussed in the presentation.

What is a book to you?

•What kind of books are there?

•What is your favorite book?

•What would you write a book about?

Some of the questions that I asked the students to consider before we started the lesson was-

Page 37: Arte 482 Resources and methods in Art Education Art Express Georgia Leake z125317 Instructor: Maria Lim.

Accordion Books from China•Paper was invented by the Chinese during the Han dynasty,

(207 BC - 220 AD)

Page 38: Arte 482 Resources and methods in Art Education Art Express Georgia Leake z125317 Instructor: Maria Lim.

Accordion books from Mexico•Accordion books were made in Mexico and Central America by the Maya and the Aztecs.

Their books were made from deerskin or amate, a paper made from the inner bark of trees. In Mexico, in the village of San Pablito, they still make the paper today in the same way. Strips of the inner bark are boiled in lye to soften them, then laid on a stone in two layers, one horizontal and one vertical. They are beaten with a stick until the fibers mesh together and form the paper.

Parts of a BookDuring the class discussion, before I started the demonstration, discussed the different parts of a book, and what they mean and what there purposes are for. The students expressed there excitement of making a book, and many already were discussing what they would put in them. It was interesting seeing the various ways of interpreting the lesson. Some students actually planned a story for there books, and what illustrations would be in them.

Page 40: Arte 482 Resources and methods in Art Education Art Express Georgia Leake z125317 Instructor: Maria Lim.

Fourth lesson: Sight- book making

I first demonstrated how we would be making the books. I discussed how to fold an accordion fold, and proper ways to cover the book. I worked slowly, again outwardly saying the steps so they would understand, stopping frequently to confirm that everyone understood. I feel that the hardest part for the students to grasp was how to actually fold the paper into an accordion, but luckily- on the last day Josh and I had an assistant that helped us prepare the supplies and help the students work.

Fourth lesson: Sight- book making

The students were able to make the accordion books, and seemed to enjoy the experience. With what time we had left, the students created unique covers and some even began illustrating the pages. I really enjoyed the final lesson, and I think Josh did too.
