After the Haiti Revolution, the formerly enslaved peasants had three tools for their ‘counter-plantation’ position - the Kreyòl language, the Lakou system and the belief-system and ritual practices of Vodou, a triumvirate of linguistic, territorial and cultural resistance. Laurent Dubois, writing in ‘Haiti: The Aftershocks of History’, notes that, ‘thanks to a remarkably strong and widely shared set of cultural forms – the Kreyòl language, the Vodou religion, and innovative ways of managing land ownership…- they built a society able to resist all forms of subjection that recalled the days of slavery.’

The language of Kreyòl, which was born in the colonial plantations, began as a basic and rough method of linguistic communication between the culturally and geographically diverse populations of the colony. After the slaves revolt Kreyòl became a language of resistance and retreat from the metropolitan state, which continued to use French as the lingua franca of power and capital.

Vodou is a creolised religion forged by African slaves and their descendants which is comprised of elements from a wide range of diverse religious practices including many African traditions from the Fon, Dahomean, Kongo, Yoruba, and other African ethnic groups; Christianity and of the indigenous Taino Indians who were the original inhabitants of the region. As Dubois comments, ‘As they suffered together through the trauma of plantation life, Africans and creoles developed their own rituals of healing, mourning and worship.’

The Lakou is a sub-altern land management system in the rural provinces of Haiti which refers to clusters of houses around a yard which house extended and multi-generational families, forms of land management and ownership which attempted to resist the return to the plantations and co-operative labour and trade practices. As Dubois wrote, ‘In order to preserve that control, the Lakou system established its own set of customs to regulate land ownership and land transfers. The state had no part in these transactions, which were overseen entirely by community and family institutions.’

Vodou is a contested theme in studies of Caribbean and Haitian art. Current discourse interrogates both auto-exoticism by Haitians, and the ‘othering’ of outsiders. Important concerns include the appropriation of the impoverished peasant or ghetto culture as an essentially neo-colonialist strategy, and the precarious position of Haitian art in general, trapped as it is between the historically marketable ‘naïf ’ or ‘primitive’ Vodou-celebrating tendency, and a contemporary desire to take its place on the stage of the international global art world.

We welcome projects that incorporate language, dialogues, place, symbolism and performance or consider global territorial struggles, forms of linguistic refusal and friction, and ritual and esoteric forms of obstruction and intransigence. The Ghetto Biennale invites artists and curators to explore what potentials these radical tools, Kreyòl, Vodou and the Lakou, have to offer to the contemporary world.

The 4th Ghetto Biennale 2015 will take place from the end of November until the middle of December 2015, the exact dates to be confirmed. All works must be made and exhibited in Haiti. Artists and curators will be invited to pass, no less than one, to three weeks in Hai t i before present ing their work in the neighbourhood to an audience of local people,

Port au Prince neighbourhood communities, arts collectives and arts organisations. The deadline for proposal applications is midnight Sunday 5th July BST and our decisions will be made and announced by the end of the third week in July.

Applicants for the 4th Ghetto Biennale 2015 must provide a written synopsis of their project proposal covering conceptual background, methodology, and a production and exhibition strategy for the proposed new work on no more than two sides of A4 including illustrations, and a one page CV, all formatted as pdfs. We will not accept any proposal longer than two sides, no attached images and neither will we accept website links as a proposal component.

Please keep in mind that we are looking for works that will be created during the three-week period in Port au Prince, Haiti. We are not looking for work that is already created. We welcome projects that may require collaboration with local artists and would be able to help connect artists beforehand.

There is no funding for this event and you will be expected to cover the cost of your flight, accommodation and materials. We will supply a reading list, there is a film about the Grand Rue sculptors on-line and we will be more than happy to help (via email) with any research and information needed, both before your application and leading up to the event. Advice can also be given about the practicalities for the production of specific projects and budgeting for the trip. If your work involves intensive interviews we will advise you to budget for your own translator. Artists should be aware that Haiti has only a 50% literacy rate and text heavy projects could be problematic for the local audience. We can help organise all hotel bookings, airport pick-ups and internal transport.

BOM Fellow Jo Gane invites submissions for a group exhibition of emerging to mid-career artists. The exhibition will be held at BOM (Birmingham Open Media) throughout September 2015. BOM is an exciting new creative, collaborative gallery and workspace for art, technology and science, which opened November 2014. Selected artists will receive a fee of £300 to produce work for the exhibition. Work submitted must respond to the brief below, however the way in which work relates to the brief is left open to interpretation. Brief: In 1961 Nuneaton Museum purchased a sculpture by Julian Henry Beck, an artist, engineer and photographer. This sculpture has since gone missing and all that remains is the truncated accession record (see image on next page). Artists are invited to produce a version of this sculpture in any media based upon the information that has been recorded. This may take any form and could also be based on more ephemeral elements of the sculpture such as what it would sound or smell like. As the accession record exists as digital data, submissions that interpret the data using digital technologies and processes are particularly encouraged.

So far the competition has featured hundreds of artists from all over the world, including Sarah Maple, Steve Rosenthal, Robb Leech, Firoozeh Bazrafkan, Mehdi-Georges Lahlou among others. "Brave" artists from around the world such as Ai Weiwei (who spent three months in prison and is banned from contacting the media), Jafar Panahi (several times arrested on charges of propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran), Johan van der Dong (no gallery in Europe has courage to show his work for the fear of attacks), Ferri Farahmandi, Azadeh Behroozi and many others, showed their works at the PFF festival and still have the courage to create despite the threats to their lives and the safety of their family. Some are forced to hide behind a pseudonym; others withdraw their works or self-censor themselves to avoid "offending religious feelings”. Artists are asked to respond to the following questions or one of them through their work and a short artist statement discussing their work (online form – one of the sections): WHAT IS FREEDOM? HOW EASY IS IT TO LOSE IT? HOW HARD IS IT TO GET IT BACK? The festival will take place in Autumn 2015 in central London. Gallery venue to be confirmed at the later date.

Artists needed to collaborate on two durational performances: creating "a museum" of objects found/from/about a place, collected, prepared and installed in a public venue during two arts festivals.

You will be involved in all aspects of the project-- but you need not be present every day of the performance, i.e. you can sign up for 2-3 days of either performance. Accommodation can be provided, but at the moment, participation is on a voluntary basis, and artists need to cover their own pocket expenses. (We will share any funding that we receive equally.)

The Paradox of Order is a project that explores the notion of why we seek order in the world. One part of the project involves creating "a museum" of objects found/from/about a place, collected, prepared and installed over a set period of time, in as public a place as possible. The local community is encouraged to lend objects and share the story/history of the object, identifying i ts s ignificance as part of the collection. www.paradox-of-order.moonfruit.com .

Two small museums are in the planning stages for summer 2015 as part of two community festivals—one in London and one in Ludlow. We are seeking artists and community members to get involved in all aspects of the projects (currently on a volunteer basis, even as we seek funding for honorariums). Those willing to be full collaborators will be mentioned in publicity for the museums.

You're likely to spend your time seeking found objects, returning to the site of the museum, cleaning/restoring/preparing items, tagging and cataloging them, and adding them to the display. Whilst performing these tasks at the museum, you'll also be accepting loans from the community, noting the story of the objects lent, and displaying these objects as well as explaining the work to passers-by, engaging in conversations with visitors about the act of collecting.

The small museum project was developed during a residency in Lisbon where the "Museum of small objects" was established (over the month of February, 2015) creating a context which allowed others to appreciate found objects and think about curation and collecting-- this video was part of the project: https://vimeo.com/121015657

The Artist Expedition Sound Development City aims to provide creative freedom to artists working in various disciplines. Each year in late summer, Sound Development City organizes a three-week expedition to two European cities. Ten selected artists working on individual projects are part of the expedition team. The fourth edition of Sound Development City is heading towards the South East of Europe and will take place in Belgrade und Athens from September 9 – 27, 2015. Sound Development City is looking for project proposals and work theses that are to be tested and put into practice during the expedition . We are interested in interventions, installations, performances, experiments, moving images, artistic research projects and concepts which benefit from being on the road, and probe urban environments as sites of both playfulness and social involvement. Sound Development City gives artists time – time for processes, for experimentation, for taking new paths – but also going astray, and for detecting and discovering the unexpected. Artists working in all disciplines can apply through the open call process. The key requirements are curiosity, openness to experimentation, process-oriented work, and adventurousness. Sound Development City is a project by Sound Development, a non-commercial and independent cultural initiative based in Zurich, Switzerland. Sound Development City aims to inspire through practical experiences and enables a close exchange between artists of various backgrounds. The expedition format was developed in collaboration with Heller Enterprises, an agency for cultural projects.

UNIDEE at Cittadellarte is changing. After 14 years as a residency programme, and a transitional 15th edition questioning the relevance of traditional residency schemes while testing out a new format, UNIDEE has evolved into a multifaceted platform, with a new educational programme based on interdisciplinary research, knowledge sharing and experience exchange, alongside a series of artists’ residency projects.

UNIDEE - University of Ideas offers an educational artistic programme of weekly residential modules taking place both at Cittadellarte and at international academic partners’ sites. An alternative to the traditional educational system, it works in synergy with international academies and public universities. It fosters processes of cross-pollination to investigate the relationship between art and public sphere, focusing on topics like social responsibility, urban transformation, participatory art practices, demopraxy, alternative models of local economic development, sustainability, etc. Designed for artists, curators, students, social entrepreneurs, cultural project managers, etc., UNIDEE - University of Ideas’ modules put forward a participatory learning experience in a small group setting, through practices, methodologies and tools apt at forging knowledge while fostering relational skills, socially responsible behaviours that value diversity, “effective” horizontal thought processes, and the possibility to “err”, on a quest for new means of expression.

The programme is conceived as a long term endeavour with the mission to be engaging continuously with civil society not only through dialogue and active participation, but also through the (re)localisation of those processes of symbolic identification on the side of the modules’ and residencies’ participants, in Biella as well as in their own original social contexts and groups.

UNIDEE - University of Ideas educational programme of weekly modules at Cittadellarte kicks off with its first year on May 4th and runs until November 27th, 2015. Its programme for 2015 sets out to explore three broad concepts: temporality, responsibility, participation (www.cittadellarte.it/unidee). Analysed from a variety of angles (artistic, historical, geographic, philosophical, political, economic, anthropological, sociological, mediological, juridical, architectural, etc.), these three key topics will be unravelled together by participants, mentors and guests, through an exciting blend of formats spanning from the theoretical to the performative. The modules will encompass experiments in art history paradigms, activism, commons, prefigurative politics, territorial transformation, museology, visual narratives, social imagery, relational systems, new rituals, social cooking, urban space exploration, ideas gathering (etc.).

The Artist as Entrepreneur: relationships between artists, society, markets and world economy includes a series of lectures and hands-on group and individual activities to provide tools for working independently as a professional artist in different countries. The module is borne out of the view that artists are professionals and should be treated as such by society, whilst themselves holding knowledge of practical matters such as rates of pay, fundraising for their practice, marketing, proposal writing, effective networking and interaction with the art world.

Rethinking the current relationship between anthropology and contemporary arts from different viewpoints, Performing Anthropology aims to unmask the assumptions beneath our cultural understanding of key concepts like museum, archive, modernity, linked to a precise and not universal idea of time, space, identity. It attempts to imagine a new affective site, a “post-colonial museum” or an “affective archive”, a critical, radically self-reflective space.

Group Matters is a methodology in progress exploring relational mechanisms within groups to develop a type of knowledge applicable to participatory art projects and the transformative potential of art concerning power relations within social structures. It is a module on group dynamics, a series of experimental group sessions on human interactions through artistic devices that needs the complicity of its participants to continue evolving. It requires contact with people who might want to engage with issues deriving from their own experience and work through disruptive methods.

Sculpture Center In Practice

The In Practice program offers artists curatorial and financial support to create new work for exhibition at SculptureCenter. We invite artists to submit proposals for new projects to be presented in early 2016. Artists selected for the In Practice exhibition will receive a $250 honorarium and up to $2000 in production support. The level of production support will depend on the scope of accepted works and available funding.SculptureCenter is a not-for-profit arts institution that takes the history and legacy of sculpture as a framework from which to consider the diverse activity taking place in the field of contemporary art. SculptureCenter's program encourages artists and audiences to explore the possibilities of sculpture and the multifarious ways in which sculpture is developing and connecting to other forms of expression. Sculpture Center seeks proposals that offer new ways of considering sculpture or furthering the understanding of the discipline and how it can intersect with other mediums. Artist proposals will be reviewed relative to the following criteria: - Quality of the proposal and prior work - Responsiveness in regards to the specific context of Sculpture Center - Feasibility of the project

All lower-level exhibition spaces, the building exterior, the website, and projects outside of the confines of the building are available for In Practice proposals. Artists are encouraged to experiment with unconventional display and exhibition formats. Past In Practice projects have included objects, installations, performance, web-based works, institutional interventions, mobile apps, multiples, and publications. Building images and floorplans may be downloaded from our website, as well as examples of previous works presented through the program. The galleries will be closed for installation April 14-May 2. From May 3-June 15, artists may make site visits during regular exhibition hours. There are no geographic eligibility requirements, but the budget does not provide for travel or accommodation costs.

Sculpture Center curatorial staff and a select advisory committee of artists, curators, and critics will conduct a preliminary review of proposals.
