Art to bring our community together

Saturday 5th September to Sunday 13th September 2015

I’m so pleased to be a Patron of the 10 Parishes Festival. We moved to Wivey four years ago this summer and it was immediately clear that in addition to the wonderful countryside and welcoming people, Wivey was also home to a thriving arts scene. We were instantly both entranced and impressed by the talent that’s living in the surround-ing hills and valleys, and what better way than to show-case it all, but the 10 Parishes Festival?

Some might ask why organisers work so very hard to put on the Festival. There are lots of huge problems in the

world that they could be addressing. Why, in this environment, does art matter? I believe it matters because looking at a beautiful painting or sculpture gives us an experience that nothing else can. It’s not just that art can make us feel good, which it can, by being made of pleasing colours, or harmonious shapes, or beauti-ful materials. A good piece of art work – whether it’s a painting hanging on a wall, or an enormous sculpture that transforms a public space – can excite, provoke, soothe, and inspire.

Nor do I believe that art is escapist. It allows our eyes and minds a chance to rest, to muse, to think. Looking at art, we reconnect with our inner spirit, a spirit that is rich in thoughts, feelings, and dreams, a spirit that can’t be bankrupted, no matter what might be happening to our bank balance.

And you don’t need to own art to appreciate it. Last year, I was shopping in Wivey on a Saturday morning when I was approached by my (now) friend Jenni Dutton who invited me to come and see her Dementia Darnings, a series of huge portraits of her mother, crafted from wool, charting her decline into dementia. I followed Jenni down Silver Street to her house, up the stairs into her temporary studio and was, literally, blown away by what I saw. The Darnings are amazing. Since then, Jenni and I arranged to bring them to London, to City Hall, where I work. My col-leagues were similarly affected and it was the most popular exhibition we’ve had there in many years.

And I made a friend. That’s another thing that The 10 Parishes Festival does: brings our community together around shared expereinces. How very, very valu-able in today’s increasingly removed on-line world. This year, I hope you all find something that moves you as much as Jenni’s art did me.

Rosie Boycott – Festival Patron

10parishesfestival.org.uk

The organisers of the first 10 Parishes Festival in 2003 could not have forecast that 12 years later art and creativity would still be being celebrated so happily across the 10 Parishes.

Once again over 100 artists, performers and craftspeople are taking part in the nine Festival days, offering you a range of cultural experiences you would not usu-ally expect in such a rural area. All types of artistic disciplines will be represented during the Festival, from painting and textiles, photography, jewellery, ceramics, sculpture and stone carving – this Festival has it all.

On Sunday 6th, join us for Carnival Day when, as part of the famous 10 Parishes Street Market, the greenest Carnival in Somerset takes to the streets. There will also be non-stop music and street entertainment along with stalls selling crafts and artworks, and the very best of local foods to taste and buy.

The Festival is organised by a group of volunteers, entirely for the benefit of the community. Special Thanks go to all the artists, performers and creative people across the 10 Parishes who have participated this year – it is a pleasure to be able to celebrate such talent in this fabulous part of west Somerset.

continue to recognise the cultural and economic value of the arts

in our community.

With thanks to the Friends of the Festival for their generous support.

During 2012, the Festival was taken under the wing of The Wivelis-combe Area Partnership.WAP provides a number of services to the local community, such as the operation of the Community Office in Wiveliscombe and Wivey Link, which provides community trans-port in the area. WAP’s oversight of the Festival en-sures that our legal and financial functions are taken care of, and allows the Working Group to con-tinue building on the artistic and community events that make the Festival special.

Saturday, 12noon-1pm – St Michael’s Church

Let The Celebration Begin with Sarah Greinig and William Rees

Raddington Festival of Music aims to raise money for urgent repairs and maintenance to the fabric of historic St Michael’s Church. Repairs to the tower alone are estimated at £70,000. This ambitious project has been organized to help safeguard the future of the Church. Ten per cent of net funds will be donated to Youth Music, a national charity sup-porting young musicians.

Reputedly the fifth smallest Church in use in Eng-land, Grade I listed St Michael’s occupies a remote site, nestling on the lower slopes of the Brendon Hills, in a valley charmingly known as ‘Raddington Bottom’ and is approached on foot across a grassy field.

“A remarkable survival of a largely unaltered medi-eval Church”

Historic England

Booking essential £10Including coffee and cake. 15 pairs only.

Booking essential £12.50 (£10.00 rear facing seat)Including and followed by a light lunch at Rectory Barn.

Well-known performer and violinist Sarah Greinig plays Bach’s Partita No 2 in D minor, with inter-spersed readings by distinguished academic William Rees about the history of Raddington Church.

Finding inspiration in the story of Raddington and especially of St Michael’s church from its medieval origins to the current restoration, William’s text will crystallise the themes of continuity and regenera-tion symbolised in the ancient pagan figure of the Green Man embossed within its roof beams. The fi-nal reading will be from the mysteriously connected legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Young musicians from Wellington School will be playing a repertoire of group and solo pieces in a variety of classical styles. The 4DGs: Meiling, Esme, Theo and Sabina Daniell- Greenhalgh will perform songs and violin pieces.

Frivolous Winds: (Trio of Flute, Clarinet and Bass Clarinet) play during tea and will have something for everyone – from Mozart to Scott Joplin.

Since coming together in 2008 the Clayhanger String Quartet have given concerts all over the West Country.

In the atmospheric setting of the candlelit medieval church they play quartets by Haydn (Op 54 No 1 in G major) and Dvorak (Op 51 in Eb major), and soprano Alison Routh performs songs associated with child-hood and youth by Dvorak, Strauss and Mussorgsky

The Voices of Exmoor choir present a short concert of lively and light-hearted pieces to lift your spirits before the autumn evenings draw in. This mixed voice choir based in Dulverton is well known for the warmth of its performances.

The Voices of Exmoor choir is made up of individuals who just wish to sing, and, in so doing, can spread an enthusiasm for their love of music to all. The choir was formed in 2005, when 16 singers from the three churches in Dulverton came together under the direction of April Golding for a “one-off” event. Ten years later the choir goes from strength to strength, now with 40 singers.

Songwriter/Guitarist and Celtic Harpist perform lively and original arrangements of Jazz and Blues Standards, Celtic Tunes and new songs inspired by Exmoor.

Saffron is a well-established, UK based singer/song-writer. She has recorded seven albums, played and sung in many venues in the UK, Europe, USA, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Hazel (Celtic Harp, Voice) studied music at Darting-ton College of Arts. She has played her harp for the Ferrara Music Festival in Italy.

3pm tea/coffee and cake, followed by J25 Concer-tina Band. Edwyn Mills regales tales of local history.

J25 carries on the tradition of concertina bands by playing a wide variety of music including items from the classical repertoire to jazz and swing, from military marches to hymns and folk songs and more besides.
