to another creative year of art education in our Sherrard elementary schools. This year I am setting up our students on a student art site called Artsonia. This is an online portfolio where you can view your student’s work and purchase a variety of keepsakes featuring their art work. I am in need of some volunteers who could take digital photos of student art. Please contact me if interested. Tony Vermeer Elementary Art Education Sherrard CUSD 200 What are we working on? Kindergarten: Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.. We are starting the year working with shapes and lines and drawing a shark. Afterwards, we will continue with our sea theme and construct a turtle while learning about primary colors. Grade 1: We will review primary colors and discover the warm and cool colors. Students will learn about symmetrical balance and apply this new knowledge in a lesson called “Hot Dogs and Cool Cats”. Grade 2: Students will create their own “Starry Night”. We will discuss the difference between geometric and organic shapes and foreground and background. In the spirit of Fall, students will begin a collage lesson “Red Fox in a Pizza Box”. This lesson will reinforce foreground, background, and include a fox’s habitat. Grade 3: Students will discover the transparency and value (lights and darks) of watercolor paint as they design and paint symmetrical “Bug Jars”. Afterwards, they will paint their own Pop Art, using contour lines, patterns & repitition. Grade 4: We jump right into painting as the students explore the use of Emphasis in Expressive Painting. We will also discover the uses for masks in different cultures, then design and create a paper mache 3-D mask. 2019-2020 Q1
