“There was a constant link betweentheory and current topics. For example, how did 9/11 change ourperception of the world? And howcan you see this in literature?”

Current theories on authenticity, intimacy and privacy
Analysis of different contemporary cultural products (texts, movies, online data)
Main questions:
How can we explore the public/private
dichotomy in a world where we are
‘public by default, private through effort’
(boyd, 2010) and where ‘private’
matters are endlessly displayed and
analysed in public?
What are new genres of intimacy, e.g.
different types of social media where
people seek and establish new types of
intimacy, affinity and feeling of
belonging?
How do contemporary Western cultures
focus on authentic lifestyles, intimate
experiences and private secrets?
Example: Intimacy, Privacy, Authenticity (Unit 2)
![Page 12: Art, Media and Society](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051503/5a65de837f8b9aaf638b5415/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

Find an example of a person (artist, writer, non-celebrity)who has practiced large-scale self-photography. Wheredoes the urge to capture and present the self-imagecome from in this case, according to you? Is itexhibitionism, self-preservation, research, or artisticstatement?
Do you think that the online world contributes to anincreasing measure of hate speech in offline society? Givearguments for your positive or negative answer andproduce examples that support your vision.
