Cincinnatus Trompe 1' oeil Mural Brotherhood Building

on Central Parkway Cincinnati, Ohio

Created by New York artist Richard Haas, Cincinnatus is painted in a style called trompe l'oeil, meaning "to deceive the eye." The mural, painted on the side of the Brotherhood Building on Central Parkway, takes on a three-dimensional quality. Some windows are real, and some are painted on the side of the building. The central figure is a marble statue of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, the Roman statesman the city was named after. The classical setting incorporates the dome of the Pantheon, colossal Renaissance columns and a Baroque staircase. This painting was commissioned in 1983 by The Kroger Company to celebrate its centennial.

Richard Haas was born in 1936 in Spring Green, Wisconsin. His father had a business in this picturesque valley which was also the home of Frank Lloyd Wright. .

Richard moved to Milwaukee and ultimately attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee receiving his B.S. degree in 1958 and his M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1964. Following his Graduate Studies Mr. Haas taught Art at Michigan State in Lansing, Michigan and then moved to New York City where he took a teaching position at Bennington College in Vermont. He taught printmaking there for nearly ten years and gave up full time teaching to pursue his mural career in 1979. Since then Richard has completed more than 120 murals, interior and exterior.

Richard Haas was born in 1936 in Spring Green Wisconsin. He grew up in Milwaukee after his family moved there during WWII. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1954 till his graduation in 1959 with a Bachelor in Art and Art Education degree. During the summer months of 1955 and 1956, however, he returned to his native Spring Green to work as a stonemason assistant to his great uncle, George Haas, who was the Master Stonemason at Taliesin, the home of Frank Lloyd Wright. His residence there allowed him to observe all aspects of Mr. Wright’s and the Fellowship’s activities. At UWM his primary instructors included Joseph Friebert in painting and Robert Von Neuman in printmaking. After a short term as an

infantry officer he returned to Milwaukee as an art instructor in an inner city secondary school and took graduate work in art at UWM. His professors included Jack Tworkov who was a visiting professor in 1960. In l961 he moved to Minneapolis where he been work on his MFA degree and remained there as a student and later as an instructor at the University and at the Walker Art Center for three and a half years. His principal professors were Peter Busa in painting and Malcolm Myers in printmaking. In the summer of 1962 he accompanied Peter Busa to Provincetown where he encountered many of the important American artists of that period. From 1964 to 1968 he was an Assistant Professor at Michigan State. Angelo Ippolito and Charles Pollock were fellow professors. Through Charles Pollock’s efforts, important artists and critics were invited to the campus, including Clement Greenberg, Anthony Caro, Jules Olitski, Jack Bush and Barnet Newman. In 1968 Haas moved to New York for a one year sabbatical that has lasted until the present. At the same time, he also accepted a one-year teaching position in printmaking at Bennington College, which lasted for over 10 years. He split his time between Soho and Vermont during this very productive period of his life.

Richard Haas, American (1936 - )

Richard Haas was born in 1936 in Spring Green, Wisconsin. His father had a business in this picturesque valley which was also the home of Frank Lloyd Wright. Richard's earliest influences and exposure to the arts was through the Taliesen Foundation which he visited and worked at as a teenager with his Uncle who was a stonemason for Mr. Wright.

He taught printmaking there for nearly ten years and gave up full-time teaching to pursue his mural career in 1979. Since then Richard has completed more than 120 murals, interior and exterior. He also occasionally takes a guest teaching position and lectures nationally and internationally. Richard has received numerous prizes and honors, among them The American Institute of Architects Medal of Honor, (1977) The Municipal Art Society Award, (1977), fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts (1987) and the Guggenheim Foundation (1983), the Doris C. Freedman Award (1989) and the Honorary Alumnus of the year from his Alma Mater, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

His murals have been commissioned as decoration for numerous public buildings in the United States. These include Chase Field; the Robert C. Byrd Federal Building & Courthouse in Beckley, West Virginia; the main branch of the New York Public Library, the Lakewood Public Library (Ohio), the Sarasota County, Florida Judicial Center and the former Board of Education building in Brooklyn, NY´. One of his most renowned works, "Brooklyn Bridge", couples both his artistic genius with his architectural background.

At 1211 North LaSalle Street on the Chicago’s Near North Side, a 16-story 1929 apartment hotel converted into a 1981 apartment building, was used for trompe-l'œil murals in homage to Chicago School architecture. One of the building's sides features the Chicago Board of Trade Building, intended as a reflection of the actual building two miles (3 km) south.

Haas created a three-sided mural on the Edison Brothers Stores building, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1984. Description: Keim silicate paint, 110,000 square feet (10,000 m2). A three sided mural with eight obelisks at its corners, a painted sculpture of Peace on the west facade, and a painted equestgrian stature of St. Louis on the south facade. The 13 story building is now a Sheraton Hotel and Edison Condominiums.

The only European mural by Richard Haas is in Munich between Rumfordstr and Frauenstr. Is one of his earliest works, realized in 1978 in occasion of his Munich exhibition.

Haas is ranked by the Russian Federation Artists Trade Union amongst the 10.000 best world artists (XVIII–XXI centuries".

CREATING DEPTH IN A PICTURE

• - shadows (going in the same direction), opposite the light

• - shading on side opposite the light source • - darker, more detailed images appear closer • - larger in foreground, smaller in background. • - placement differences – smaller images higher

PROJECT

• Find a simple object (or objects) to draw 3-dimensionally

• Experiment with light on the object • Try to draw from the angle you’re looking

at it, using shading, shadows, perspective
